The Ruins Update Guide

Overview

This guide explains the “Stuff of Nightmares” update which includes a new level below the caves called the Ruins.

1: The Update

This update called “The Stuff of NIghtamares” was released August 21st 2013. It adds an entire new area called the Ruins and also enabled Steam Workshop for Don’t Starve allowing you to access and make mods in a flash.

2: Ruins?

What are the Ruins you may ask? Well the Ruins was once large city created before Maxwell came along. However the extensive use of Nightmare Fuel corrupted the city turning it into an unstable wasteland. When the player enters the Ruins, they will be greeted by the corpses of the Clockwork Minions which can be blown up to salvage Wires and Gears. The use of Nightmare fuel also caused the area magic to intensify, causing the terrain to glow red and causes Hallucinations to appear regardless of player sanity.

3: The Mobs

The first mob we will be covering is the Ancient Guardian. Its appearance is similar to the Clockwork Castle covered in fur. It appears in the section of the Ruins known as the Labyrinth. It has 2200 health and deals 100 damage per strike so caution is advised when fighting it. When killed it drops 8 Meats and an Ornate Chest.

Another mob found in the Ruins is the Dangling Depth Dweller. It looks like a regular spider but is colored white and has red eyes. The main difference between the Dweller is that it uses its silk to ambush from above. It has 200 health deals 20 damage per strike. When killed it drops either Monster Meat, Silk or a Spider Gland.

4: The Items

The first discoverable item is the mysterious material called Thulecite. Found in the Ruins, Thulecite is a key material used to make Ancient Items.

The second item is called the Slurper Pelt. It is a drop from Slurpers and is used to craft the Belt of Hunger. It can be also traded to the Pig King for gold and can be used to befriend Pigs.

The third item is called the Green Gem. It is used to craft the Construction Amulet.

The next item is actually a food item. It’s called Lichen. When eaten they restore 3 Health, 12 Hunger but lowers sanity by 5. It can be acquired from Cave Lichens that grow in caves. They spoil in 2 days.

This next object isn’t obtainable in your inventory but can be blown up. They are called the Broken Clockworks. They can be exploded with Gunpowder or hammered and will yield Frazzled Wires or Gears. However when hammering the Clockwork it could come back to life and attack you.

You can also find various Relics, Pillars or Statues that can be mined for Stone and Marble.

The next item is called a Nightmare Light. It’s built into the terrain and Hallucinations can spawn from it.

The next item is called the Ancient Pseudoscience Station. It is only found in the Ruins and is the only way to craft anything in the Ancients Tab. When first discovered it will be broken but can be repaired with Thulecite to unlock new recipes. You can also strike the Station with a hammer resulting in it to either drop items, spawn monsters or lower your health.

The last item included is the Ornate Chest. It’s found in the Labyrinth and is usually guarded by spiders. When opened it can contain a variety of items but will drop nothing when destroyed.

5: Craftable Tools

The first tool I will be covering is the Pick/Axe. It can be used to chop down trees and mine rocks. It can be used 230 times as and axe or 77 times as a pick. You need a Golden Axe, Golden Pick and 2 Thulecite to craft one.

The is called the Magiluminescense. It provides a small amount of light when on the ground or worn. When worn it gives you a small speed boost and sanity boost. It gets worn out after 1 day or use. It takes 2 Thulecite, 3 Nightmare Fuel and 1 Yellow Gem to craft.

This next item if called The Lazy Explorer. When equipped the player gets a speed boost and can teleport at the cost of 15 sanity. It can teleport 20 times before breaking. It takes 2 Nightmare Fuel, 2 Orange Gems and 1 Walking Cane to craft.

The next item is called the Construction Amulet. When worn it will generate 2 sanity per minute and will decrease the amount of materials needed to craft an object 50%. It will break when 5 items are crafted.

The next item gauges the magical intensity of the Ruins. It’s called the Thulecite Medallion. The higher intensity of the Ruins means that monsters will spawn and the area will turn more Nightmarish. It takes 2 Thulecite and 2 Nightmare Fuel.

This item helps with hunger. It’s called the Belt of Hunger. When worn it will reduce the hunger lost by 60%, it will take 8 days for it to break. It takes 6 Slurper Belts, 2 Rope and 2 Nightmare Fuel to craft.

The next item is both dapper and durable. It’s called the Thulecite Suit. When worn it will generate 3 sanity per minute. It reduces 90% of damage and can absorb 1800 damage before breaking. It takes 6 Thulecite and 4 Nightmare Fuel to craft.

The final item is called the Thulecite Club. It does 59 damage per strike and can also summon ghost tentacles for extra damage. It can be used 150 times. It takes 3 Living Logs, 4 Thulecite and 4 Nightmare Fuel to craft.
