The Undertale Combat Guide for Undertale

The Undertale Combat Guide

Overview

This guide is a large guide to combat in Undertale. It will explain soul types, attack types, weapons and armor stats and locations, and where monsters will show up.EDIT: Thanks guys! My guide got to the top of the page! I can’t take a screenshot, but I still appreciate it so much! Thank you!

Intro

This is my first version of the guide. This means some information may be inaccurate or missing! If you see something missing that you think should be on the page, leave your suggestion in the comments below!

This is my guide to combat in Undertale. I’ll explain the attack types (attacks monsters use to hurt you), soul types (how you defend), where monsters show up, and the statistics of different weapons and armor. Let’s get right in, shall we?

Soul Types

Your soul, or your red heart (as some call it) may change colors during some fights. While it is a different color, it will move differently. This section of the guide will explain how those souls work.

Red Soul – This is the soul that appears nearly all the time. It appears during some boss fights and all monster fights. It has simple controls, where you can move anywhere, in eight directions.
Blue Soul – The blue soul appears during Papyrus’ battle, and a few times during Sans’ battle. The soul has the “platformer” mechanic, similar to Super Mario, where you can move left and right and have the ability to jump. Gravity does apply to this soul.
Green Soul – The green soul appears during Undyne’s fight. The soul is trapped in a small box, yet has a blue shield that can be changed directions with the arrow keys. It is used to block the arrows that come towards your soul. The soul itself cannot actually move during this mode.
Yellow Soul – This soul appears during the final two Mettaton encounters. The image is an upside down yellow heart. The soul has the same mechanics of the Red soul as it can move in any direction, but you can press [Z] to shoot a bullet. The bullets are used to destroy incoming obstacles.
Purple Soul – The purple soul appears during Muffet’s battle. There are small purple lines during this mode, likely representing a spider web (due to the given situations). You can move left and right on the web, and jump from one to another.

Attack Types

Regular Attacks

There are several different attack types monsters will use to hurt you. This section of the guide will show you how they work.
White – The classic attack. If your soul collides with anything white, it loses some of it’s HP. These attacks appear in more than 95% of different monsters, even if there are other attack types to.
Green – The opposite of white. Colliding with green attacks will restore some of your HP.
Blue – One of the two Moving Type attacks. If you are still when the attack hits, you will not lose HP. However, if you are moving when it hits, you will lose HP.
Orange – The other Moving Type attack. If you are moving when the attack hits, you will not lose HP. However, if you are still when it hits, you will lose HP.
Gray – Gray attacks deal no damage at all. They are used to spell out messages in the Napstablook and Mettaton fights.
Red – Red attacks will usually be in the pattern of a box. They are used to signal that the enemy will attack in that area next. When you see a red attack, move away from it quickly to avoid losing HP.

After being hit by any attack (other than Red, Gray or Green) your Soul will flash for a quick second as it has just lost some HP. During this time, your soul is invulnerable, and after that, you are vulnerable again. This time can be extended by equipping the Cloudy Glasses or Torn Notebook.

Special Attacks

There are also special attack types associated with souls, as you need to interact to dodge or interact with them.
Undyne’s attacks (Green Soul):
White Arrow – The white arrows headed towards your soul are normal. If you use the keys to move the shield in front of the arrow, the arrow will collide with the shield and disappear. You will lose some HP if the white arrow gets to your soul.
Yellow Arrow – The yellow arrows are what make the fight harder for the most part. They act like white arrows, but just as they are about to collide with the shield, they go around and attack from the opposite side. You can see this in the arrow as the arrow is pointed toward the other side of your soul, so it looks like it would hit the bottom of the arrow. You will lose some HP if the white arrow gets to your soul.

Mettaton’s attacks (Yellow Soul):
Hallow Boxes – During the attacks, white boxes will come down from the top, similar to other white attacks. Sometimes, the attacks are unavoidable, which is why they can be destroyed. By pressing [Z] you can shoot a small bullet, and if the bullet collides with the box, it will destroy the box. Colliding with it will damage your HP.
Bombs – There will be some bombs during the fight that come down, similar to Boxes. They will damage the player if collided, and if shot, they will beep, and about half a second later they will make an explosion in the shape of a +. Being anywhere directly above, below or to the side when it explodes will damage the player. If there is a Hallow Box in the +, it will or will not be destroyed, depending on the way they are laid out. Bombs will not destroy other bombs.
Boxes – There are boxes similar to hallow boxes, but they are filled in completely. The player will be hurt if they collide with them, and the bullets do not destroy the box. Bombs or bullets do not destroy the box if there is a box in the way. There are ususally bombs next to them, requiring the player to shoot the bomb, dodge the explosion and go in the gap where the bomb used to be (if the player does not want to get hurt).
Disco Ball – During a couple of attacks, there will be a disco ball at the top that does not move. Colliding with it will hurt the player. There will be blue and white lines, or ‘lights’ that will move to the left. Shooting the disco ball will switch the two, therefore making blue to white and white to blue, demonstrated in the GIF below.

The attack shows up twice during the battle.
Legs – During the fight, there will be legs with high heels coming from the top sometimes. They will damage the player if they collide. They may start in Regular or Moving status. If the leg is Regular, it will not move, sometimes blocking the way. If it is Moving, it will move from side to side, which requires the player to dodge the leg. You can toggle the legs between the two modes by shooting a bullet at them.
Sans’ attacks (Red/Blue Soul):
Karma – Karma attacks are some of the hardest attacks. They appear like white attacks, but when your soul is colliding with one, you will rapidly drop health. There is no invulnerability time for these. When your soul collides, part of your HP will turn pink, instead of dark red. Then, your HP will slowly drop for the next few turns, until the pink area is gone. These fights only appear in the Genocide route, or the NO MERCY route as some call it.

Where Monsters Show Up

Monsters will show up in most of the areas of the game. Monsters will not show up at, but not limited to…

  • Towns
  • Homes
  • Areas that have an impact on the story (sometimes)
  • Most rooms with Puzzles
  • Some Secret Areas
  • Other Friendly Locations

While exploring, or trying to get to an area, monsters will show up at random, with different monsters being in different areas.
