Overview
This guide teaches about the unwritten diver classes that coordinated dive teams could utilize to achieve decisive victories against the sharks.
The Unwritten Diver Classes
If you have played a single round of Depth, then I’m sure you have noticed that this is most certainly a teambased game; especially for the divers. Teamwork is an absolute requirement for victory otherwise you will not prevail against even the most mediocre sharks or shark bots. In order to achieve a decisive victory by minimizing casualties on the diver’s end; each team member should bring a particular set of weapons, equipment, and skills to the table.
Being particularly skillful with a specific set of weapons and equipment while performing specific tasks for your team puts you into a specialized class which you may or may not have been aware of. The 5 main classes are as follows:
- The Tracker
- The Netter
- The Harpooner
- The Treasure Hunter
- The Trapper
The Tracker
Tracker’s job is to strategically set up Sonar Buoys in defended rooms in such a way that sharks and nearby Sea Mines are not easily able to destroy it. (Such as very low to the floor, high up on cielings, in corners, or against walls). A Tracker must also only use tagging weapons to further help the team track the shark’s location. There should be at least one Tracker on every team as they help the rest of the classes with their functions. It is highly suggested that most teammates bring Sonar Buoys even when playing a weapon class other than Tracker, unless they’re a Trapper.
- Weapons: Tagging SPP-1 and APS Tag Rifle
- Equipment: Sonar Buoy
The Netter
The Netter’s job is to net and trap the enemy sharks to slow the shark’s advanced towards both your teammates and S.T.E.V.E. Netters can work offensively or defensively. They can net offensively by first netting sharks and then switching to their secondary weapon to kill the shark, or they can net defensively by staying with the group and soley using the net gun to hold sharks for your teammates to kill. Playing defensively also helps delay the sharks by forcing them to waste precious time being stuck in nets so S.T.E.V.E can get further ahead. Killing all of the sharks isn’t the only way to win.
- Weapons: Net Gun and Barbed Net Gun
- Equipment: N/A
The Harpooner
The Harpooner is what many would consider the “Sniper” of the group. For the beginner harpooner it is easiest to kill the shark once the Tracker has tracked the shark so that the Netter may net and hold the shark, then he or she can use the precise and powerful harpoon gun to kill the shark quickly while it’s being held. An expert harpooner should be able to a kill fast-moving shark without having to wait for them to be netted, and a master harpooner should be able to kill a Mako mid-lunge with a non-explosive harpoon.
- Weapons: Spear Pistol, Twin Spear Pistols, Spear Gun, Harpoon, and Explosive Harpoon
- Equipment: N/A
The Treasure Hunter
The Treasure Hunter’s job is to simply collect as much gold, cash, relics, and other treasures off of the ocean floor, ruins, and wrecked ships, etc. and bring it back to S.T.E.V.E as quickly as possible to help fund your teammates so they may buy better equipment sooner. They should bring a DPV or Magnetic DPV (DPV = Diver Propulsion Vehicle) for faster travel to help avoid sharks. This can also be used as a sub-class along with other weapon classes.
- Weapons: DPV or Magnetic DPV
- Equipment: N/A
The Trapper
The Trapper is specialized in the careful and strategic placing of Sea Mines (Such as in front of doors, windows, breakable walls, and in the middle of hallways) to delay shark advances and protect fellow divers from sneak attacks without killing teammates or damaging S.T.E.V.E. The Trapper may also carefully and strategically place Shark Shields in hard-to-reach areas so that they won’t be easily destroyed while hiding your nearby teammate’s positions so they can easily ambush any attacking sharks. The Trapper’s prime weapon would be the ADS Tranq Rifle, but this is mostly an equipment based sub-class that can be used with any weapon class, or DPV except for Tracker.
- Weapons: N/A
- Equipment: Sea Mine or Shark Shield
