Overview
Risk of Rain 2 popped up on my radar out of nowhere and before I knew it, I was playing it like a maniac. This is an addictive game featuring a progressive and challenging gameplay that can definitely entice you. Here are a few tips and tricks that could come in handy in your mission for survival:
What is Risk of Rain 2?!
Risk of Rain 2 applies the mechanics and features of its predecessor into a 3D environment. This is an action rogue-like game which has the player taking the role of a survivor trying to escape a hostile planet. The gameplay is about fighting waves upon waves of enemies while navigating through multiple handcrafted levels with randomized elements.
Evolving difficulty
The base difficulty in Risk of Rain 2 can be set at the start of each new round. However, the game features a second difficulty level which increases over time while playing. This evolving difficulty prevents players from endlessly farming a level while simultaneously upping the challenge.
Leveling up
As a rogue-like game, Risk of Rain 2 has an in-game leveling system that restarts with every new attempt. Leveling up a character increases the health and base damage granting a better chance to survive longer.
Fall damage
Mistakes are harshly punished in this game. Jumping or falling off a cliff will cause damage proportional with the distance to the ground. You can also fall off the map which will result in your death if your current health is lower than the penalty. Beware of heights and don’t forget to take advantage of items or abilities that could prevent you from taking fall damage.
You can’t drown
Water isn’t very common on this alien planet. However, when you find yourself submerging, don’t panic because you can’t drown.
Damage fall off
Risk of Rain 2 has a damage fall off for ranged weapons. This means that the further you get from a target the lesser damage you will deal with your basic attacks.
Be constantly on the move
The action is extremely frenetic. The enemies usually come from all sides and they mean business. Being always on the move is the best way to avoid taking damage. Kite enemies, jump, make use of your mobility items and use your avoidance ability. The lesser you stand still, the harder it is for the enemies to get you.
Item effects stack
Loot plays an important role in this game. While the item drops are randomized, builds can be made on the fly. It is crucial to know that the effects from items stack. This means that looting the same item multiple times increases the effects gained from that particular item. E.g. Looting multiple Lens-Maker’s Glasses will further increase your chance to critical hit.
Lunar coins are persistent
Lunar coins are a rare and valuable currency that you shouldn’t throw around. These coins are used to unlock special chests that hold rare items that cannot be obtained otherwise. Lunar coins are also required to unlock one of the survivors.
The enemies never stop coming
In a way, Risk of Rain 2 is a horde mode game. The enemies won’t stop coming until you complete the objective on each level. You might be able to win a few moments of respite. But before you know it, you might find yourself surrounded by creatures hell-bent on killing you. Before you decide to overextend, remember the game becomes more difficult as time passes by.
Charge the portal and beat the boss
Finding and activating the portal is the objective for each level. The portal charges while you are staying within the marked area around it. When the portal charging phase is triggered, a boss will spawn which has to be defeated in order to continue. Charging the portal to 100% and defeating the boss will allow you to continue to the next level.
Get the most out of each level
Before you go to a new level, make sure you get the most out of the current one. The money gained is not retained between levels. Therefore, you should spend all the money you can on the remaining locked chests. However, don’t worry if you can’t spend it all because it won’t go to waste. Any unspent money is turned into experience when entering the portal towards the next zone.
Drones carry over to new levels
The temptation is high to spend all your money on chests and new items. However, Risk of Rain 2 is a game of attrition where survival is very important. As the drones carry over to new levels, you should get as many as you can. The drones really pay off in the long run as they can provide extra dps and much needed healing.
Don’t steal items from your teammates
Risk of Rain 2 is a game that’s extremely enjoyable in coop. Coordinated efforts make for a better chance at overcoming the increasingly harder levels. While playing with other players everything is shared and the item drops are available for everyone. You can definitely steal the loot unlocked by your teammates. But it goes without saying that this isn’t ok. Teamwork is the key to survival.
It’s Early Access
In over 10 hours of gameplay I haven’t encountered a single notable issue that would prevent me from enjoying this game. However, Risk of Rain 2 is in Early Access. This is an incomplete experience that isn’t suited for everyone. There’s bound to be problems and various things could change over the course of development. Keep this in mind before jumping on the well deserved hype wagon for this game.
