Overview
Cracks are a hallmark feature of many tiled substances, but many times these cracks are poorly situated in a way that appears unnatural, as it is painstakingly obvious that they were merely overlayed from a single image. We can see this below if we take a look at an extremely basic brick texture with a ‘cells 3’ image overlayed:
This isn’t bad, but it’s not exactly accurate; notice how the cracks spread seamlessly between bricks in a way that would never occur in nature. What we want is something more like this:
Notice how in the second image the cracks appear to be generated randomly for each brick, instead of the having the lines flow evenly from one brick to the next as seen in the first image.
