Overview
A primer on the basics of creating maps and riding the rails! We will be updating this guide through Early Access as features are updated, so be sure to check back.
The Main Menu
- New Game
This will create a new map for you in Builder Mode. - Load Game
This will bring up the Map Load screen. - Settings
Adjust audio, control and display settings here. - Quit Game
Exit Train Frontier Classic. - Resume Game
Return to your game (appears when returning to main menu from an existing game).
Builder Mode
Create maps that you can ride in Conductor mode. Share maps online, and even invite friends to come and build with you.
There are three edit modes in Builder:
- Tracks – Lay down tracks for your rail line.
- Terrain – Edit the height and terrain texture.
- Props – Place objects in your map.
To Change Modes:
You can either click the mode (Tracks/Terrain/Props) at the bottom of the screen or use keys:
SHIFT + 1: Track Mode
SHIFT + 2: Terrain Mode
SHIFT + 3: Props Mode
Keyboard/Mouse Controls
- W – Forward
- A – Backward
- S – Left
- D – Right
- SHIFT + (move key) – Fast movement
- Middle Mouse Button Scroll – Zoom In/Out
- Left Mouse Button – Confirm/Place (Track/Terrain/Prop)
- Right Mouse Button (HOLD) and Move – Rotate your camera.
- Esc – Menu
- TAB – Swap Mode (Builder/Conductor)
You can:
- Lay Track
- Delete Track
- Select Exisitng Track
- Deselect Active Track
- Raise Track
- Lower Track
- W – Move Forward on Existing Track
- A – Move Backward on Existing Track
- Right Mouse Button – Recenter Cursor
- Left Mouse Button – Active Action (Lay/Delete/Select/Deselect/Raise/Lower)
Laying Track
Hotkey: 1
The circle icon and track arrow represent the direction of your track. Press Left Mouse Button or Space to place a track. Rotate the camera or move the mouse and track arrow to build in different directions.
Deleting Track
Hotkey: 2
Delete the last track in current path.
Select Track
Hotkey: 3
Select/Jump to track position closest to your cursor. Move your cursor and press (3) to jump to that portion of track.
Deselect Track
Hotkey: 4
Deselect from the current point in the track and mouse click to reattach to the track closest to your cursor.
Raise Track
Hotkey: 5
Lift your track off the ground to automatically raise bridges.
Lower Track
Hotkey: 6
Lower your track into the ground. If the track goes underground or through a mountain, you will automatically go into tunnel-build view.
Track Building Tips
- CREATING FORKS: You can create forks in the track by moving to existing track and place new tracks at an angle.
- CONNECTING TRACK: When you build near track, if you see the track cursor turn light blue, that means the next placed track will automatically connect.
You can:
- Raise Terrain – Hotkey: 1
- Lower Terrain – Hotkey: 2
- Flatten Terrain – Hotkey: 3
- Auto-Paint Terrain – Hotkey: 4
- Paint Terrain – Hotkey: 5
- Right Mouse Button – Recenter Cursor
- Left Mouse Button – Active Action (Raise/Lower/Flatten/Auto-Paint/Paint)
Raise Terrain
Hotkey: 1
Press Left Mouse Button to raise terrain at the cursor location.
Lower Terrain
Hotkey: 2
Press Right Mouse Button to lower terrain at the cursor location.
Flatten Terrain
Hotkey: 3
Press Left Mouse Button to flatten terrain to nearby elevation at the cursor location.
AutoPaint Terrain
Hotkey: 4
Press Left Mouse Button to automatically paint terrain different ground types.
Paint Terrain
Hotkey: 5
Press Left Mouse Button to paint terrain the ground type selected in the Terrain Wheel. Click on different slices of the Terrain Wheel to select a new ground type.
Track Building Tips
- BUILDING LAKES/BODIES OF WATER: Lower your terrain below sea level to automatically create bodies of water!
You can:
- Place Prop – Hotkey: 1
- Delete Prop – Hotkey: 2
- Undo Prop Action – Hotkey: 3 or CTRL + Z
- Redo Prop Action – Hotkey: 4
- Right Mouse Button – Recenter Cursor
- Left Mouse Button – Active Action (Place/Delete)
- Spacebar – Active Action (Place/Delete)
- Z – Select Next Prop
- C – Select Previous Prop
- E – Rotate Prop Clockwise
- Q – Rotate Prop Counter Clockwise
Place Prop
Hotkey: 1
Click Left Mouse Button to place the current prop. You can rotate it before placing.
Delete Prop
Hotkey: 2
Delete the highlighted prop. Delete-able props will highlight red before being deleted.
Undo
Hotkey: 3
Undo the last action.
Redo
Hotkey: 4
Redo the last action.
Props Building Tips
- FAST SCROLL PROPS: You can grab the Dot icon in the prop list at the top and drag to quickly go through props.
Map Saving/Loading
- Enter the menu (Esc or Click Menu on the top left) and click on the Map tab.
Saving Maps:
- Click the ‘Save Map’ text.
- Click an empty slot. If the slot has a save already, you will be prompted to overwrite.
Tip:
You can rename your map by clicking the default name that displays under ‘Save map’. The text will turn orange; you can now delete the existing text and give it a unique name.Loading Maps:
Click ‘Load Map’ and then click a map slot.Auto Saves
Maps in progress are auto saved every few minutes. You can find the auto save slots at the bottom of the maps save list (scroll wayyyy down!)
Conductor Mode
To enter CONDUCTOR :
- Enter the menu (Esc or Click Menu on the top left) and use the Game Mode tab.
- Or click the Conductor Icon
- Or press TAB from Builder Mode to swap.
Before you can ride, you need to place your train on the tracks!
If you don’t have any tracks, you’ll default to fly mode. Return to Builder to place some tracks.
Conductor Mode Switching
You can Right Mouse Button and HOLD to bring up the conductor mode options or use the hotkeys below.
- 1 – Cab view
- 2 – Follow (Train) View
- 3 – Fly View
- 4 – Figurine
- 5 – Vehicle
Press 1 (Cab View) or 2 (Train View) on the keyboard and look for the nearest track. You’ll see a green ghost train. Click the Left Mouse Button to place you train.
If you don’t see a Green Ghost Train, press F. If you have train already place and want to move it, press G to take it off the tracks.
Hotkeys
- W – Throttle (Give power)
- A – Track Switch LEFT
- S – The D – Brake
- D – Track Switch RIGHT
- Q – Toggle Forward / Reverse (Must come to stop first)
- E – Brake
- R – Toggle Train UI On/Off
- Spacebar – HORN!
- G – Remove train from track
- F – Place train mode (mouse click to confirm)
- Middle Mouse Scroll Wheel – Zoom in/out. If you are on the locomotive engine, if you mouse scroll all the way in, you will automatically switch to cab view. If you middle mouse scroll out, you’ll zoom out to train view.
- Up/Down Arrow Keys – Move the camera focus up and down your train.
- To select your train, bring up the overlay menu (Press Esc or hold RMB and click Menu in the top left).
- The first slot is your engine. To change it, click on the slot, then click on another engine.
- The remaining slots can be tenders, train cars or additional engines.
- To ADD engines/cars, click on a numbered slot and then pick your selection.
- To REMOVE engines/cars, move the mouse over the selection and Right Mouse Click.

Multiplayer
- Enter the menu (Esc or Click Menu on the top left) and click on the Multiplayer tab.
HostingYou can click Host Private or Host Public to host your map as a public or private map.
JoiningClick Join to get a list of open sessions. Select and Join–you will wait a few moments as the map downloads. The host can give you permission to build props along with them!
Sending InvitesAfter hosting, click Send Invites to open your Steam Friend’s list to select and send.
PermissionsAs the host, you will see status text next to your guests. Click this text to enable different permissions, such as building permission for guests to add props and to enable/disable train collisions.
Saving MapsJoined a game and really like the map? Save it from the map tab like any other map!
