Trenches [WIP] Beginner’s Guide

Overview

This is a relatively short guide on how to play Trenches in v.0.185. It should have all the Information you need to get started. This Guide was made for the last version of the game, but you should still be able to get all the Information you need out of it, stuff might just look a bit different.

Welcome, Welcome to Trenches [WIP]. It’s safer here.

First of all, welcome!

If you are visiting Trenches, there’s a good chance you have played other well known FPS War-Themed Games. If you haven’t, that’s no issue! We are here to showcase how to, and break it down to a molecular level (Won’t show you how to brush your teeth, sorry).

Trenches is based around the concept of Trench warfare continuing onto the Great War and further. As time has passed, so has technology of course. This brings the new concept of mixing old strategies and “Modern” warfare. And what can be more fun than shooting weapons into another timeline? Of course, shaping the battlefield to your desires!

Welcome to Extreme Landscaping! Trenches offers the ability to build your own environment around yourself, whether that be with a shovel, or a nuclear shell. There is lots of bunkers, wire, encampments, factories and dreams to build in this world of chaos.

Oh btw, there’s also trenches for some reason. Weird.

Trenches is in a very early development stage, being only 10%-15% done.

The game is being developed by a terrific Australian trio, therefore development is slower.

They are :

  • Ethan – Code Spaghetti Untangler
  • MarshmellowKing – Code Spaghetti Untangler
  • Braiden – 3D Artist/Code Dabbler

Now! We have stuff to learn, let’s go.

The Different Modes.

There are 3 Different Modes in Trenches.

1) Wave Defence – Defend your land from the enemy! The enemies are AI that have 2 objectives in their life, kill you and destroy everything you own. With every wave the game gets progressively harder until you are overrun/bombed to shreds

2) PvP – The most fun part of any multiplayer game, the other players! In this gamemode each team’s goal is to capture the most areas and hold them for the longest. This can be a very active tug of war, or a super slow Trench-Encamped match (But who likes those). Bring a friend! Bring a foe! Bring your whole family (We hold no responsibility for any damages done to your mental health)

3) Nuclear Race – A hate-fueled gamemode, which encourages teams to bond and repair a device of pure doom : The Kannon! This baby fires a nuclear shell which annihilates anything it strikes, leaving a huge hole in the ground, and also kills your enemy for good!

How to find/make a server.

Once you open the game you might find that you can’t see any servers, this is because there are no dedicated servers for the game (yet).

You can start a dedicated server yourself! Check out how to right here > Dedicated Server Startup

To find a server you simply have to refresh the menu which you can do by pressing the little reload arrow.

Shown :

If there are no Servers currently or they are locked with a password (which you can recognize by them having a padlock next to their name), then you can simply make your own Server by:

Clicking on the Host game button, circled in here:

Then you will see this Menu pop up:

  • With server name you can name your server whatever you want, so that your friend can find it. (I’m assuming you have friends here).
  • With Server visibility you can change who can see your server and who cant.
  • If you click Password you can change the password, if you leave it blank anyone can join and no password is required.
  • Finally with Game Mode you can change the game mode, where you have the option between Wave Defense and PvP (there currently are only two maps, one for each gamemode so don’t bother with that)

How do I spawn?

To spawn in you simply press “Nearest Spawnpoint” and then you click on the point. That simple.
There is a glitch sometimes where you press spawn but nothing happens. One thing that might help is to open and close your map (M) until you eventually go into first person again.

How to build in v.0.185

ATTENTION: Curently as of v.0.185 you can only build in PvP mode.

Press “F” to open the menu.

To build a structure you have to be near a friendly command post. If you are not then everything except “Command Structures” will be red and you cannot click on it.

If you are not near a friendly command post click on the command buildings option and then click on command post. Once you build that you will be free to build every other building.

There are different tabs for the buildings for example “Command Structures” and “Offensive buildings”.

Trenches, Bunkers etc are all in defensive buildings.

To build these (Same as the Command Post) click on them and then you will see a Blueprint of them. Press again to place them, (This sometimes doesn’t work on the first time, try switching to a different weapon and then hammer, to place it again).

Then hammer away until the building is done. If you want to rotate the blueprint, simply press “R” to rotate the piece. If you want to snap a piece to another simply press “Ctrl”.

There (sadly) is no way to demolish buildings in-game so consider where you place buildings. That is of course if you do not plan on unleashing the power of explosives, which will demolish pretty much anything, even your marriage.

How much you build only depends on how much the game can take

So go ham!!!

Did someone say GUNS?.

Here we are at the most fun part of any FPS. Armament.

To get new guns you have to go to a Munitions factory. In PvP you have to build this yourself, it’s located under the production tab.

In Wave defense there is a munitions factory in the back of the map. To find it simply spawn at the furthest back spawnpoint and walk towards the enemy lines, after a few meters you will see a shack with a gun rack. Walk up to that house and press “E”

This is the Building in the Wave Defense mode:

In both modes once you’ve found the Munitions Factory, your next step is walk up to it and press “E”, there you will see a screen with the different Weapon categories. Click on a category you like and then press “craft”, you will then see a Blue bar progressing. Once the Blue bar is finished you will see “collect”. Press this Button to receive the gun in for your Inventory.

Then press “I” to open your Inventory and click and drag the Gun/weapon to the slot you want it.

You also have to make ammo for your gun to do this open the munitions factory (“E”) and click on the bullets icon. then just click on the ammo for your Gun.

Standard Bullets are for the sub-machine guns.

Rifle rounds are for the (You guessed it), rifles.

Ammunition is automatically put into your inventory so you don’t have to do anything there.

How about Vehicles?

Since I keep seeing this question asked, both here and on my Youtube video.

Currently There Are No Vehicles in-game!

The developers have taken a decision to move the vehicles to a secret facility, to fix the numerous issues they caused and get some sweet rework done! There is no telling when they will return, but the day will come.

(In case you came from my YT video) The Reason there are Vehicles in my video is because i recorded it in the last version of the game that had vehicles. Right after the video was published, the developers removed them.

Connections

A community needs to efficiently communicate, and for this reason we have multiple platforms on which everyone can communicate

  • If you feel overwhelmed, that’s perfectly understandable! For this reason I have attached a video of my own, explaining most of the things in this guide visually.

  • Trenches Discord[discord.gg] – The community mainly hangs around on Discord! Here you can find all the guide editors and most important of all : The developers
  • https://www.reddit.com/r/TrenchesWIP/ – The reddit community is also a viable option to communicate with us! (Not as Effective)

Would you like to support the game’s development? We have a goal for self-sustaining dedicated servers, but they cost money. Consider supporting us!

  • Patreon[www.patreon.com] – A monthly subscription service, which grants you access to polls and special news about the game’s development!
  • Ko-Fi[ko-fi.com] – If monthly payments aren’t your thing, and you just wanna flick us a few bucks, consider shooting us a cup of Ko-fi. We can always use more coffee 😉

Glitches

As said before, the game is in very early development, which is why it has so many glitches, bugs and exploits. If you find a glitch you feel is gamebreaking and has not been noticed before, please give us a shout either in discord or in the comments!

Remember, this is a community driven project, and every piece of help counts

We have a lot of common ones, such as :

  • Bots – They have a brain the size of a potato, currently they are the 1st generation and will receive a lot of rework in the future!
  • Game Crashes – Currently the game is a RAM monster, it needs a sacrifice before it starts working. This issue is very common and is being addressed as a top-priority on the fix list.
Windows 7 does not run the game, no matter what (It is being addressed as well)

  • Balancing – The game of balance will never end, all the prices, damages, and environments will receive a rework at some point, but it is not the top priority at this very moment
  • Buggy Building – This is due to the system still being as old as the game itself, will be reworked.
