Tug: The Unknown Game ?

Tug is an “avant guard” early acess game wich tries to redefine the rules of the actual survivals and voxel worlds based games. You are a Seedling, a magical creature capable to shape its apparence depending of the actions you perform in the game.
Created by Nerd Kingdom, i invite you to check the official forums[forum.nerdkingdom.com] and their website[nerdkingdom.com], also take some time to check the wiki[tugwiki.com]wich is often updated and accurate.

A video made by Inori of Nerd Kingdom, enjoy:

H.U.D and Controls

Heads Up Display :

An example of HUD, note that you have a description on the item when you hover it with the cursor in the inventory.

Status bars

The red bar shows your health, you can loose some health when falling, taking damages or eating mushrooms. Of course, if depleeted… you die and respawn where you spawned on the server.

The yellow bar shows your stamina, you use stamina when you run, jump, use a tool and eat some mushrooms. Depleeted, you are unable to run and working is harder. Stamina refills over time or can be filled with a potion or some mushrooms with positives effects.

The blue bar show the energy, it represents your hunger. You can refill it with fruits and cooked meat. If depleeted, you died immediately.

You can toggle on/off the HUD by pressing shift + u.

Shortcuts:

The four leafs under your status bars are the quick access shortcuts.
Drag items from your inventory to place them in the shortcuts.
Press number keys to equip the items in your hand.
Note that when your inventory is full, if you collect items they will go directly in the shortcuts.

Controls:
To find a complete list of key check this page of the wiki (maybe dated)[tugwiki.com][/previewimg]

Keyboard:

The game is currently using querty keyboard layout by default. To change this press Alt+Shift.

Move: w,a,s,d.
Run: hold Shift.
Toggle Crouch: Ctrl.
Jump: Space

Inventory: E

Mouse:

The left button is the only way for you to grab and interact with anything in the world. It represents your left hand in the game.
The right button gives you the ability to use the item or the tool you took from your inventory.
For example: you’ve found some fruits. Go in the inventory menu by pressing E and right click on the fruit you want to “equip” it in your hand.
The fruit in hand left click to eat one, if you have some more, click again to consume an other, ect…

If you want to drop an item on the ground, drag it from your inventory or equip it and press the left mouse button.

Shift and the middle mouse button changes the scale of the square you have when you target a surface with a tool. All blocks in the game are composed of small squares; the maximum size for a block is of 2 by 2 small squares. So, if you scroll down or up instead of putting a big block of 2 by 2 you can put a smaller one.
It affects everything you touch, so if you are mining you can speed up the job by increasing the size of the block to extract but at the cost of an increased loss of your tools durability.
Two screenshots showing the two differents sizes:

First steps in the game

You have to make the difference between the componants actually availiable to you and the one you may acquire later. I’ve added some screenshots to help you to start.

Firstly, try to find small wood by searching young trees or roots. You will get wood with a Y form, the wood handle, wich is the basic wood for tools.
Here a Wood handle:

Here an example of roots and sapplings:

After that, search for some plants or fruits, in general they are in some bushes or trees. When you break them you will gain some vines and fruits.Vines are necessary for crafting tools and weapons but we will deal about tools first.
An example of a vine:

Don’t forget to eat some fruits to refill you energy bar. Each time you eat a fruit, you gain its seeds. Of course you can plant them when you will be able to craft a crude Hoe or they will be used in the recipe of the health potion.

Here are some gourds, you can eat or use them later in the recipe for potions:

Some pumpkins, they are a good way to refill your energy:

Now we have to do the most difficult, to find stones. At the beginning you can only gather rocks wich lays on the ground. If you equip a Hammer rock (some rocks like this one have a durability bar, you can use them as a basic tool), you will be able to break Axe/Hammer/Pick rocks sources and large rocks.

Boulder needs a crude hammer or a hammer.

When you hover a rock with the cursor you can see its name, wich usually represent what kind of rock you will find if you break it.

To craft you’re first crude tool, take a Hammer rock, take a Vine, a Wood handle.
Hold G to craft the item.

Here are some pictures about the process of crafting a crude hammer. The other recipes are in the next sections of the guide.

Be ware ! This game is about discovery so don’t give up too fast when you try to find new recipes.

Now repeat the same process with an Axe rock to craft a Crude axe.
You will be able to chopp down trees and get Chopped Wood.
With 2 Hammer rocks and 3 Chopped Wod you will be able to craft a fire.
Don’t forget to hunt goats to get some meat.
Be carefull and good luck out there Seedling !

[ Spoiler ] Farming

Except for bananas, everytime you eat a fruit or use a fruit in a craft you gain seeds.
We have 6 different seeds for the moment (september/october 2014).

To farm and be able to grow your own crops, you need to craft a Crude Hoe or a Bronze Hoe (check next sections to find the recipes).

When your Hoe is ready, find a place where the land is flat and with dirt or mossy dirt.
Be carefull, fertile soils looks like that:

If you have herbs/ clovers, take a tool like an axe and aim the plant to see it’s name above your status bars. At this moment you will be able to hit them without digging the soil.

When the area has been emptied of plants, aim the ground with the Hoe and dig the soil.
In fact you don’t dig but you shange the “texture” of the ground by furrows.

Now you can equipe your seeds and plant them in the soil.
Some fruits like Pumpkins takes more place to grow, so be carefull and check if you have enough place to plant them near other crops. Actually you need a 3 by 3 square to gros a pumpkin.
I will give the other crops in an other update.

In general, plants needs one day to grows (still need to check all plants).
A fresh Pumkin sprout in the soil:

[ Spoiler ] Alchemy

Implemented recently the alchemy is one of the elements that will lead to the magic system.
Don’t forget to put the pumpkin cauldron near a fire. The cauldron is ready to use when you can see bubbles on the blue liquid inside.

We have some usefull recipes. Powders, seeds and gourd flasks must be droped near the cauldron to craft potions.

Gourd flask:

Fuel potion:

You need the pumpkin cauldron on a light fire, a gourd flask and tooth powder.

You need the cauldron on a fire, a gourd flask and bone powder.

Speed potion:

You need the cauldron on a fire, a Gourd flask and an orange mushroom chunk.

Health potion:

You need a pumpkin cauldron on a fire, a gourd flask and a powder made with all the seeds you can find: apple, orange, cherry, melon, gourd and pumpkin.

[ Spoiler ] Mining, how to find your first ores.

Crudes tools are useful in the first minutes of the game. But quickly it will become a problem.
They have a low durability. As an example, to reach the required level to find copper and tin, i had to use around 12 crude picks !
This is quite difficult especially if you consider that you need to dig 30 blocks (the biggest size, 2/2) deep to reach copper and tin ores.

Mining is actually easy when you reach -30 under the ground. There are no veins, you just need to mine the cobblestone blocks and copper ore, tin ore and coal drops.

An other problem when mining, is the fact that quite often pick rocks, axe rocks or hammer rocks will drop with cobblestone. These rocks can block your way, so don’t forget to “clean” your tunnels or you will be quickly overwhelmed.

So as i said before, to find your first ores, craft a good stock of crude picks, if you’re short in tools, you can use hammer rocks or axe rocks instead. Don’t forget to craft torches to light your way in (check Furnitures, lights and miscanellous section).
Dig 30 blocks deep. And you will find the ores and some coal. Coal can be found if you use an axe on an extinguished fire or fire pit.

[ Spoiler ] Forging

You have now ores and some coal.
To forge tools and weapons you need a Stone furnace, a Sandcast mold and a crude workbench.
Check crafting stations section to find their recipes.

Once you have them, you will be able to craft a latten.
On the furnace put a copper ore, a tin ore and a coal to light the furnace. To light the furnace you can take it and put it again on the ground. Each times the furnace will be light.
When the latten is ready, you can start to craft a Bronze head for a tool or a weapon.

As an example we will make a Bronze hammer head.
Go to your Sandcast mold with a latten and a crude hammer.
Be ware the Sandcast need to be close to the furnace, to see if its position is allright, check the mold.
If you see some smoke, you placed it at the right location near the furnace.
Some pictures about the correct placement of the Sandcast mold:

Use the mold to craft a Bronze hammer head with a latten on it and a hammer next to it.
The crude hammer serves as a base for the mold. But you have to use a crude tool or weapon each time you want to craft a bronze head.

The Bronze hammer head done, go to your Crude workbench.
For the Bronze hammer, you need its bronze head, a leather strip and a hardened wood handle.
You’re Bronze hammer is ready !

[the next is coming soon]

However lights are necessary and they don’t loose durability.
Here is a list of all theses items.

Torch:

With a fire or a fire pit and a wood handle. Lights a little.

Large Torch:

Same as the torch but you use a wood branch instead. Lights better.
