Overview
Are you new to thes game? Regardless if you’re playing the game for the first time, you’ll encounter these people! If you want a suggestion, you can put it on the comment section so it will be included to the guide.
The Newbie
A player who started playing Project Torque for the first time, specially after the Steam re-release. This type of player already had to start somewhere and will start experiencing Project Torque in their fresh new Corus/K-660/Executive/Wizz before getting used to the handling model in both Arcade and Sim gamemodes. However, they mostly play Arcade VS since all starter cars (Except the Kawana K-660, which is RWD) are FWD and tend to understeer in Sim VS harder than Takeshi Nakazato’s R32 GT-R.
Here’s an example of understeer on a FWD car:
The Casual
Essentially an “Average Joe” in Project Torque. Don’t worry about them, since there’s a good number of them that are perfectly fine out there. They got ups and downs, they pick cars that are their taste, they play the game for fun!
Also, you can have fun playing with them in lobbies as long no one ram each other.
The Clean Driver
Similar to casual players, these guys prefer driving perfectly clean and will normally avoid ramming or resorting to cheap, dirty tactics (just like Takumi Fujiwara from Initial D franchise). Some of them are actually good at the game, while others are just subpar. They’ll immediately apologize you if they unintentionally bump your car specially due to the game’s handling model. Also, if they’re in 1st place far away from other players, they’ll slow down or even stop their car near the finish line while making sure that everyone will finish the race for good.
Definitely one of the best types of players to race with. They’re very friendly as long you don’t ram anyone or tick them off.
The Professional
The polar opposite of “The Newbie” and more advanced version of “The Clean Driver”. These guys are surprisingly good at the game, they’re mostly chill and may even have a steering wheel that will allow them to deal with the game’s handling model (if I’m correct). Also, they know how to properly drive in the game without ramming anyone.
If you don’t mind about losing in the game, then you should hang out with these guys. As long you don’t rile them up.
The Rammer
The biggest losers and scum of the Earth in racing games. Oh boy, where to begin?
These bastards will intentionally ram everyone just to win the race. No matter if it’s Arcade VS, Sim VS, Drag race, Thunder Alley, etc., they’re here to ruin everyone’s fun and turning the game into diet-coke Forza. They’re also seen driving stock-looking cars or even riced-up rides, half of them speak (very) broken English and tend to come up with very poor excuses for ramming everyone for no reason. Thankfully, they’re powerless in lobbies with Ghost mode “on”. In all seriousness, these guys deserve to recieve a big slap to the face for their insolence.
You’re better off staying away from these clowns anyway. Or even better, try hosting lobbies and set Ghost mode to “on” so nobody will get hurt.
The Griefer
An even more pathetic version of “The Rammer”. These guys (regardless if they’re unexperienced in the game) will deliberately ensue chaos in the game. Rather than simply win the race, they’ll target everyone (rammer or not) specially new players in order to rile them up. Just like rammers in a nutshell, they’ll immediately slam you off the road, talk trash or even spew nonsense on the chat.
Along with the rammers, you’re better off staying away from them. Good lord…
The “Counter-Rammer”/Rammer Hunter
These guys hate rammers. They hate them so much that they’ll go full Imperial Guardsmen from Oblivion towards players who bump into others. If you’re one of those dirty drivers who ram into other cars and don’t apologize for the accident, they’ll immediately retaliate or gang you up as the result. After the race, they’ll deliberately antagonize or even warn you regarding your antics. However, they’re (occasionally) protecting anyone from rammers which doesn’t sound bad. And just like the latter, they’ll apologize you if they accidentally bump your car.
When not provoked, they’re fairly decent and (mostly) well-mannered as long you don’t upset or even set them off. Also, if they’re driving high-class cars while you’re in a class 1 car and then, bump into one of them, you’re better say “Sorry” or they WILL go thermonuclear and ruin your day. You bastard.
The Tryhard
Similar to “The Newbie” and “The Rammer”, these living punching bags guys will try their hardest to win the race. They think they’re very good at the game, but (ironically) they’re not really that good. If they reach the finish line in 2nd place while not reaching that sweet, juicy pole position, they’ll immediately whine about it and will also attempt to ram other players out of sheer anger. Also, they can be easy targets to other (and far more skilled) players who will punish them for ramming. In the end, they may also end up rage quitting.
If you’re on a lobby with Ghost mode “off”, they’re quite easy to deal with depending on the class restriction or you could just stay away from them before they’ll become a nuissance to other players in the lobbies.
The Rage Quitter
Self-explanatory. Imagine this scene: A new player is racing against you in a Class 1-only race while you’re driving a fully tuned Wizz/Executive/K-660/Corus. Then, he attempts to perform a PIT Maneuver only to crash into a wall and wreck his own car. As the result, there’s a high chance that he’ll immediately leave the race even though he can still earn RP and XP when being unable to finish the race after the “race will end in 14 seconds” countdown. Also, the game itself will penalize your reliability if you leave during a race, which was also meant to disencourage rage quitting.
If you see a new player getting frustrated about losing the race, tell him that he’ll still get paid and rage quitting will penalize his reliability.
The Wangan Hogger
Regardless of their playstyle, these guys ALWAYS pick the Wangan Line no matter what you do. Want to earn a quick buck? Wangan. Want an easy race without understeering into a wall? Wangan. Want to race while listening to Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune OST? That’s right. Wangan. As for drag races, grinding on Wangan is more profitable than in Arcade VS/Sim VS even though they still pick the latter and waste more time than the former instead!
Fun fact: These guys ain’t no Akio Asakura.
The Drift Boy/”Eurobeat-head”
These guys love drifting, specially in Arcade VS. No matter if it’s FWD, RWD or even 4WD, they’ll drift into corners or even powerslide either for fun or advantage. Also, some of them are avid Initial D fans who will blast Eurobeat tracks (even if it isn’t from the said franchise) from their “mymusic” folder while they’re playing the game.
Just like clean drivers and casuals, they mostly play the game for fun. If they want to spice things up, they’ll play on “Drift” gamemode while waiting for the iconic Toyota AE86 Sprinter Trueno/Corolla GT-S to be re-added to the game in a future update, licensed or unlicensed.
The AFKer
Yet again, self-explanatory. These guys will literally sit and do nothing during the races. They can be either:
- Suffering from desync which will cause them to start the race rather late while the others already smoked him.
- Has no motivation whatsoever and want to “grind RP and XP” by simply doing nothing just like in Team Fortress 2’s “idle/trade” servers.
- Probably doing necessities in real life like going to the bathroom, eating and etc.
Once you encounter them, they’ll idle and ramming them does nothing. They completely ignore anyone until they’re technically no longer idle.
The Lagger
Suggested by Khrono Mclurvin on Project Torque Discord server.
An even more pathetic counterpart to “The AFKer”. This guy has a nasty habit of lagging due to their North Korean internet connection and being a massive nuissance among the other players in the lobby. Regardless if he’s a rammer or not, he’ll “teleport/fly” all over the map or even “sink” on the ground, which makes it impossible for anyone to overtake this bastard with Ghost mode “off” since you don’t know where the ♥♥♥♥ their car really is.
Just like the bad examples in this guide including “The Rammer”, stay away from this person at all costs.
The NASCAR Fan
Suggested by Khrono Mclurvin on Project Torque Discord server.
These guys LOVE NASCAR in general. Plus, they mostly (or even always) play the Thunder Alley gamemode while ignoring others even if they’re trying to grind for a quick buck. However, there’s a chance that you’ll encounter rammers or even (very) oblivious newbies who have no idea that the said gamemode actually does have a penalty system or limited fuel.
While Thunder Alley is my least favorite gamemode in Project Torque besides Explorer, Capture The Flag or even Drift, this one’s quite a mixed bag.
The CTF Strategist
Suggested by Khrono Mclurvin on Project Torque Discord server.
A rather minor one: These guys only play Capture The Flag gamemode just like “The NASCAR Fan” and view it as the “best game of car chess ever created”. However, they usually avoid other game modes since they don’t have the same strategy to fulfill them like how CTF does.
Yet again, mixed bag. So, watch out for any rammers or griefers out there since they may end up ruining the game of CTF anyway.
Conclusion
Thanks for reading! I hope you find it enjoyable and beware of the players listed in the said guide. If you have any suggestion, I’ll list it in the guide and make sure that you’ll get full credit.
