How does it work?

With the release of Ashes of Malmouth DLC, a new feature has been introduced, known as the Illusionist NPC (non-player-character). The Illusionist NPC will allow you to override the appearance of your currently worn items with the appearance of any other item texture you have found, allowing you to come up with unique outfits.

The quickest way to access the Illusionist NPC is through the Crucible. In case you do not own this DLC that’s no problem, because there will be Illusionist NPC’s found within all bigger cities throughout the main campaign.

The earliest Illusionist NPC within the campaign you can find is “Paulia”, residing in Devil’s Crossing (see Screenshots below).

If you are a new player:
You get access to the city right after you spoke to Captain John Bourbon, who sends you to clear out an Aetherial threat, found in the cave lying under Burial Hill.
This is a main quest and you will be guided through it by quest markers on your map (hotkey “M”).
Once you finished the job, you can use your personal Riftgate to return to Devils Crossing immediately to turn in the quest. (hotkey for the personal Riftgate is by default “L”).
After this you speak to the guard standing right above Captain John Bourbon at the gate.
Now you have permanent access to the city.

  • Screenshots of the Illusionist, found right after passing the gate to Devil’s Crossing:

All Illusionists are marked with a silver mask symbol on the map or floating above their head:

Previewing items is free, but once you hit “Apply Illusion” your iron bits will be spent:

Collecting the items in question

The time and effort needed in order to obtain items may vary greatly, mostly depending on the main factor of your own drop-luck, or they only drop from a specific enemy in unique locations.
I recommend to use the database provided below to search the item in question, which in case of a special drop can even point you to a map showing the exact location:

So what can you do to speed things up?

You can trade or even exchange items with trusted fellow gamers to acquire the skin of an item for your use at the illusionst. Once the item was within your possession (inventory), its skin will unlock for all of your characters. The game distinguishes between Soft- and Hardcore characters, thus items and their Illusionist skins cannot be shared between those but must be collected separately.

Many good looking items can simply be acquired from various faction vendors within the campaign.
All you need to do is farm reputation for them, by killing their enemies or solving quests.
Once you have a high enough standing with them, hit up their bounty tables and solve their missions to earn reputation even faster.

If you are dedicated to farm specific items take note that some only drop by certain bosses or within certain locations. I recommend to use websites like grimtools or other item databases for Grim Dawn, which will provide you with all the information needed (even maps).

Many items are random drops, which you will obtain at some point by playing the main campaign or from rewards earned within the Crucible DLC.

If you are lacking some illusions, I recommend trying to make up for the missing skin with another item that comes close in design. I always worked with what I had at the given time.

After some recent patch the level requirement and faction reputation lock concerning illusions was removed, thus you can apply all collected illusions to your equipment from level 1.

If you already have a main character, you can collect rare items for your new characters in the shared stash. They can then sell them off to cover the funds needed to get a proper Outfit as soon as possible. After creating a new character access the Illusionist within the Crucible, modify your leveling gear and switch back to the main campaign to level in style all the way!

Changelog:

February 12th 2018

  • added a new Outfit which should compliment many lightning focused builds.
  • added a second perspective to every Outfit.
  • added a new cover picture.

February 17th 2018

  • added the 7th Outfit – I was hesistant to share this one, cause it shares many items with the previous one, but as it has a different color range and vibe, I wanted to present it nonetheless.
This one looks good with flashy guns as well (one- or two-handed).

  • added the 8th Outfit – as I thought it was about time for a stealthy look, this one should be rather easy to replicate as well. I wanted to keep it simple to approach what I think comes close to an assassin-like appearance, but the swords with their great detail and size still manage to make it stand out just fine.

February 18th 2018

  • added the 9th Outfit. I wanted to blend a feeling of dread and awe into his one. Like an eery bastion that towers over the battlefield, while standing on a pile of mutilated corpses.

February 22th 2018

  • added the 10th Outfit in celebration of the new content packed patch 1.0.5.0!
It looks amazing from the isometric perspective and I am finally featuring a Caster Off-Hand.

To make sense of this golden beast a little story comes with it as well:
In those witching hours a noble Templar followed rumors of incredible riches within the Grove, only to fall into depravity once he donned that elusive looking Wendigo Mask… isn’t it bizarre how strong the Jojo vibes are with this one? “WRYYY!”

February 24th 2018

  • minor extension and clarification to the “Collecting the items in question” section.

February 25th 2018

  • after receiving some feedback from the Grim Dawn Discord Community I added suggestions for “more subtle killing tools” concerning the “Legion Covert Ops” Outfit, to pay homage to the Legion and the lore of Assassins. Hope you enjoy!

July 10th 2018

  • added the 11th Outfit. This setup is all about the demonic n’ Blazing Glory concerning one of my favorite Big Bad’s… and it comes with his own beloved Boomstick! An ultimate tool of destruction, which spilled oceans of blood in the name of a certain god… enjoy the burning massacre!
  • made changes to the section “Collecting the items in question” as some information became obsolete after more recent patches.

July 20th 2018

  • added the 12th Outfit. I used a female character model this time. It is hard to tell the gender after donning this Outfit and looks just as good on a male, though I like how the female body makes it appear more slender overall.
I wanted to play a zealous Inquisitor after being inspired by some material about the Knights Templar from the Crusades. Now you can hunt Heretics, Witches and Necromancer’s to burn at the stake – or shoot anyone in the kneecap running over that new-mown meadow – knowing you did the right thing… I am sure Judge Dredd would approve! <3

August 4th 2018

  • Added a new section “How does it work?” to clarify on the Illusionist mechanics in as much detail as needed, so that even new players or those being unfamiliar with Ashes of Malmouth can find their way easily into the topic.

August 5th 2018

  • Added some clarifications and made minor changes to the content.

August 6th 2018

  • Added the 13th Outfit. I think we can all agree on the Blood Knight being one of the more impressive looking sets… but I had to tear him apart! To breathe life into my own creation…
I present you – the Void Knight
His engine of destruction is not fueled by blood anymore, but by the sheer power of the Void.
Being devoted to the Void, we are provided with many murder tools, so I came up with some options for you this time. All of them look awesome in the isometric perspective, but there are tons of one-handed and a few two-handed weapons and caster off-hands left to choose from.
In case you don’t like the glove effect take the alternative I mentioned. But I simply enjoy seeing the Chaos effects flashing in harmony… and hope so do you! <3

August 11th 2018

  • Today I was blessed by the spark of creation, thus I present you with two new Outfits!
  • Added the 14th Outfit. This time I wanted to come up with an Outfit for a powerful Inquisitor, namely the Headmaster of the Order.
As the Jacket already comes with a holstered pistol, I left the other guns in the cabinet.
The Headmaster wields the mighty Arcanor – ceremonial blade of the Luminari order – that has passed from Headmaster to Headmaster for centuries.
Though he is mostly decorated with Luminari Regalia, everything he has donned is engraved with powerful runes and their magical power seemingly oozes out to manifest itself.
The result is a dark but noble look – hope you like it.

  • Added the 15th Outfit – the Stormsurge!
The namesake comes with the idea to utilize cold and/or lightning, or simply arcane might!
As you can see dozens of incantations and words of power were whispered into these threads.
I always wanted to utilize a brighter bluish tinted arcane look but it never seemed to work out.
But then I combined Maiven’s Hood + Chilldread Mantle. As it came together I was wondering…
is this what would happen if Sub-Zero and Kitana had a baby?!
There are countless weapons and guns to choose from, brimming with sparks and crisp icicles.
You can utilize most plain weapons with this design as well.
Though I used the female character model, this should look just as good on a male.
Feel free to name him Sub-Zero… “FINISH HIM! Fatality! Flawless Victory!”
