Overview
Was fiddling around with this fun program and came up with a very simple easy-to-do Wooden Texture for some Tree Bark. You will learn how to create the Color for Texture (Diffuse) then Copy and Load it to create some height (Normal).***Please Note: I am not a professional yet and am still learning this type of program as the end goal is aimed to help others while I learn and show you what is possible using this great tool!***
Instructions on How to Create a very Simple Wooden Tree Bark Texture
Step 1
Right-Click in the Project Area and “Add Noise”.
Step 2
In the “Noise Settings” do the following:
(A) Turn Wrap OFF
(B) Set Seed to 12
(C) Set Sharpness to 10
(D) Set Scaling X to 185
(E) Set Contrast to 50
(F) Set Brightness to 220
Step 3
Next Right-Click in the Project Area a second time and “Add Palette”.
Step 4
Right-Click and “Drag the Palette under the Noise” to connect it.
Step 5
Now in the “Palette Settings” do the following:
(A) Turn Wrap OFF
(B) Change Max RGB to a “Brownish Color”. Any Brown Shade you prefer will be fine.
Step 6
Right-Click in the Project Area a Third Time. This time “Add Blur”.
Step 7
“Drag the Blur under the Palette” to connect it again then do the following with it’s Settings:
(A) Turn Wrap OFF
(B) Set Passes at 1 (Should be 1 by Default).
(C) Set Radius to 1
(D) Set Amplify to 5
Step 8
Now Right-Click in the Project Area a Fourth Time and “Add Copy”
Step 9
In the “Copy Settings” give it a name. In this case I titled mine “Normal_Map” as an example.
Step 10
Right-Click in the Project Area a Fifth Time then “Add Load”.
Step 11
On the “Load” node you’ll notice the Preview Window to the left is Black. Ignore that and go to the “Load Settings” then type in your “Normal_Map” name (or the name of the Copy Node you titled it beforehand). You should then see your Texture that you created in the nodes before your Copy Node now appear in your Preview Window again since it basically ‘Loads’ what you previously made prior as your ‘Copy’ per say.
Step 12
This time Right-Click in your Project Area one Last Time (6th) and “Add NormalMap” then drag and drop it underneath your “Load” node to connect it. This will generate your Normal Map wheras the other Node Set leading up to the Copy Node is your Diffuse Map.
Step 13
Now in the “NormalMap Settings” do the following:
(A) Turn Wrap OFF
(B) Set Height to 256 or however high you want it
(C) Set Kernel to 3 and you’re Done!
NOTE: I’m currently unsure of any other way other then to save them out together other than individually so to do that go to “Export > Save As TGA” and title it whatever you want. I named mine Wood_1_DIFFUSE and Wood_1_NORMAL.
To save out each individually just go to the Project Area and double-click them so that the little TV Icon next to it appears so that you can know which one you are previewing. You can then export them out for each doing this. Your Diffuse will have your Colors and your Normal will have the Tinted Blue.
Select “BLUR” for your “Diffuse” then Export as TGA.
Select “NORMALMAP” for your “Normal” then Export as TGA.
Once I gain more experience with this program I will likely come back and update it if I am able to find a faster way to do everything along with providing a better updated example.
This is currently just to help others with a detailed demonstration. Have fun!
