Voice-overs and subtitles in different languages for BioShock Infinite

Voice-overs and subtitles in different languages

Overview

Cliquez pour la version FrançaiseEnglish is not your main language but you’re among the people who prefer original voicings?Facepalming Irrationnal Games for not implementing such a simple feature? No worries because if you follow this guide you’ll be able to play the game with the original voicing but subtitled in your own language.

Walkthrough

  • Step 1

Take a look at this folder: SteamsteamappscommonBioShock InfiniteXGameLocalization
In it you should see at least the INT folder, it is the folder where the subtitles for the INTernational version are located.
Make a backup of it (a compressed archive will take almost no room).

  • Step 2

Go in the game’s properties in steam, in the language tab, chose the language you want your subtitles in (I did it with French subs).
After the 300MB download (subs AND voices in that language), go in the folder from step 1.

  • Step 3

You will now see another folder in addition of INT, for me it was FRA for français (french). Make a backup of this folder too.

  • Step 4

Go back in the game’s properties in steam, in the language tab, and change it back to english. It shouldn’t last long because it seems the voices are not deleted between language changes.

  • Step 5

Go back again in the folder of step 1. What you will have to do now is delete the INT and XXX (your language, FRA for I) folders then you’ll take the backup of the subs in your language and uncompress it. Then you will rename the resulting folder from XXX to INT. Go take a look in this folder.

  • Step 6

What is in this folder are the subtitles in your language, and as the game is now in english, it will look for them in that INT folder, it will read YOUR language for the subtitles. But there’s still an issue.

  • Step 7

Take a look at the extension of the files, they are of your language (*.fra for I), you have to rename them to the *.int extension.
In Windows 7 you can open a command line in that folder (shift+right-click on the folder and Open command window here) and type the following command:

    ren *.XXX *.int

Where XXX is the current extension of the files (again, fra for I).
Type enter and check for the extensions quickly in the explorer.

NOTE FOR WINDOWS 10: in that version of the OS, you will have to use the “Windows Powershell” prompt but the comand is the same.

  • Step 8

If all went well, launch the game and enjoy playing with the original voice-over BUT with your own subtitles.

Hopefully, next time the developpers will have the afternoon necessary to implement it themselves. XP

DLC

Concerning the DLCs, the manipulation must be applied separately to each.

I ignore if the “redownload” part of the guide is necessary but it seems all languages are installed at once, saving/deleting the INT folder and renaming the FRA folder (or your language) and the extension of each file therein seems to do the trick.

Here’s the folder where you’ll find the DLCs:
steamappscommonBioShock InfiniteDLC

In each of the subfolders you’ll find a “localization” folder which contains the data to move/edit the same way as described in the main guide.

Know that “DLCA” and “DLCB” look like they’re the first two DLCs of the “Season Pass”, the other folders, if any, should be from special or preorder editions.

Voxophones

There is no subtitles for Voxophone messages in game. Please refer to the transcripts in the related pause menu when a Voxophone is discovered.
