Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within Guide

Walkthrough for Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within

Walkthrough

Overview

Straightforward walkthrough of the game. Does not guarantee 100% of points. This is a beautiful game, wonderfully acted with many interesting hidden objects and discussions. You will miss out on a LOT if you only do what is required! This is not a friendly guide – it contains the bare minimum (more or less) to get through the game.Examine everything. Read everything in your inventory. Talk to everybody. If in doubt, click on a textual item like a letter to have it read out loud – sometimes the game doesn’t trigger until after you’ve done this. There may be a more efficient way through the game than this. If so, please let me know!If you find a dialogue option isn’t available, or if somebody isn’t where they are supposed to be (Ie present when they should be missing) make sure you’ve done everything else first – some plot points won’t trigger until near the end of chapters – you might be fobbed off with “Come back later” or something similar. See if anybody has anything new to say.

Chapter 1

Open your bag and take some items.
Open your inventory and read both letters.
Exit to the bottom of the screen.

Go back to the zoo, into Klingmann’s office. Search his coat. Use the splice tape on the walky talky on the desk.

Leave, and have Thomas escort you to the wolves. Look at the tag, and then take a hair sample.

Go into town to the post office (left of the Gasthof) and ring the bell. Give her the parcel and then your purse.

Chapter 3

Read Von Glower’s business card in your inventory

Read today’s newspaper on the table.

Go to Ubergau’s office and collect Grace’s parcel. Ask him about everything. Then, go outside, and halfway along the street, go into the clock shop (it’s the third window from the left). Look at the clock on the left of the counter, then use Gabriel’s wallet on the shopkeeper to buy it.

Go to Dienerstrasse (where the club is) to find the crime scene. Use the evidence report on the TV crew.

Go into the hunting club, into the main room, then through the arch to the back room. Use the cuckoo clock on the plant, then go back to Xavier. Wait. When Xavier leaves, quickly click on the podium, then the drawer and take the keys.

Use the keys to open the locked door in the back hall, then retrieve the clock and use it again on the plant. Return the keys the same way.

Talk to Von Aigner and Hennemann about everything.

Take a magazine from the table in between Von Zell and Klingmann. Put your tape recorder in the magazine, then return it.

Chapter 4

There is a bug in this chapter – both Neuschwanstein and Herrenchiemsee will flash as unfinished on the hint screen even when you’ve done everything needed there. As long as you look at everything mentioned here, the game should let you continue.

Go to the library, look at the left-hand shelf and take the Ludwig biography. Read it.

Go to the post office and ring the bell to collect the letter. Read it.

Go to the Gasthof and talk to The Smiths about everything, including the two tarot readings.

Go to the church, go to the crypt at the back and look at Gerde.

Go back to the castle bedroom, through the closet, and down the stairs at the back. Take some roses then return to the crypt and give them to Gerde.

Now you have the car keys, use them! Go to Neuschwanstein.

Go to Herrenchiemsee. Talk to the desk clerk and buy a ticket.

To the left of the desk in the entrance hall, read the March 1, 1865 letter, the June 14, 1878 letter and the November 1886 letter.

Click in the background to zoom in, then follow the right-facing exit into “Display Room 2” – this one has the painting at the end.

Read all four panels on the left.

Look at the sleigh painting at the end of the corridor. Read the plate next to it.

Look in the display case underneath the painting and examine both notes.

Return to the desk, then take the left-facing exit behind the painting into “Display Room 1” – this one has the red gown at the end.

Look in the display case on the left (under the painting) and read the plaque about Ludwig’s diary.

On the far right, read all four panels containing extracts from Ludwig’s diary.

Return to the front desk and talk to the desk clerk about everything.

Go back to Rittersberg go into the castle. Don’t skip this cut-scene! Gerde will tell you you’ve had a missed call. If this doesn’t happen, then something important has been missed at the castle or the museum.

Go to the library and use the business card on the phone to call Professor Barclay back.

Use Dallmier’s number on the phone to call him.

Go into down into the Gasthof and ask Huber to call the Smiths down. Talk to Mrs Smith about your dream.

Go to Bayreuth (the Wagner museum)

Outside the church, examine the flowers and take one.

Go back to Seeshaupt, go to the railings again, then click on the water just underneath the cross to view the shallow water. Put the lily in the water.

[My game frequently crashed upon leaving this location..Grace would walk off-screen but the music would just keep playing….so you might want to save before doing so]

Return to Rittersberg and go to into the castle. Gerde will tell you you have a fax.

Go to the post office and collect it. Read it.

Go back to Bayreuth and give Georg the fax.

Chapter 5

Go back to the club and collect the tape recorder from the magazine.

Go to Ubergrau’s office and he gives you a letter from Grace. Read it. Play him the tape, then talk to him about missing persons.

Go to the police station. Talk to Leber about everything.

Use the tape with Leber.

Go back downstairs and take the matches from the fireplace.

Go outside, into the stables and take the shears.

Go right, down, right, down – examine the orange mud on your way past if you like…

Use the shears on the bramble, and go through.

Use the matches on the lantern – if you want, you can try to walk right first….to hear the only curse word in the game….

After the cut-scene, go back to the lodge (up, left, up, left), inside, up the stairs and into Von Glower’s room

SAVE YOUR GAME. It is possible to get killed in this next section.

This part is kind of random, and you have to rely on the game sending you the right way. The objective is to drive the wolf to the ravine. Walk around until you find him (try going right). When you’re on the same screen as the wolf, use the talisman on it to force it away, then follow it. Don’t click on the wolf itself, and don’t try and push past the wolf, or you’ll be killed. Eventually, you should end up at the ravine. If you go the wrong way, you’ll be killed and have to do this section again. Luckily, it isn’t too long.

When you get to the ravine, use the gun on the wolf.

Chapter 6

Go to the post office and ring the bell. Read the long letter you’re given.

Go to the Gasthof and talk to Mrs Smith about everything. Take the bread roll.

Go to the castle, into the bedroom, and take a pillowcase.

Go back to the dungeon, use the bread roll on the bird, then the pillowcase on it.. Talk to Gabriel twice.

Get in the car and go to Altotting

Look in the display case at the silver body parts. Read the panel. Go to the back and through the arch, look at the basket of bottles and use Grace’s wallet on the basket to get some water.

Go to Neuschwanstein.

To get the scroll from the bedroom, go to the living room and move towards the back. Wait until the child has gone, then use the water on the chair (after the guard leaves). Go back to the bedroom and use the panel in between the doorways near the floor.

To get the scroll from the grotto, push the panel in the wall on the left hand side

To get the scroll from the Singer’s hall, move left and use the bird on the adjoining hallway. Then, move right and push the panel underneath the painting. (It’s the one with the lovers sat on the grass)

Go back to Rittersberg, to the crypt in the church, and look at Wolfgang’s mourning heart. Grace will say it reminds her of the ones at Altotting.

Go to the castle and ask Gerde about the silver heart, then go to the church and take it.

Go back to Altotting and give the silver heart to the priest.

Put the silver heart in the basket on the ledge.

Move to the right of the screen and open the door.

Stand on the chair, and look at the urns. Look in Ludwig’s (bottom left) to get the final scroll.

Opera

Yeah, I know technically this is chapter 6 still, but it’s a completely new part of the game so might as well be…besides, there’s no going back at this point…

Look at the table and pick up a programme.

Go to the right and go right to the hallway. Go to the door at the end to enter the office. Take the opera glasses and the list from the table.

Take the seating chart from the wall. Look at the chandelier plan in your inventory. Click on the X. Examine the seating chart, and click on the Mittel Loge – Grace will notice they line up.

Talk to Gabriel.

Go back to the foyer and enter the main auditorium. Talk to Georg. Talk to the Chandelier guys.

Go back to the foyer and go up the stairs just to your left. Go through the door at the end to BACKSTAGE.

Take the small piece of rope from the side. Go downstairs to the basement.

Go right and open the box on the wall. Take the keys. Go left, then down. Open the door to the left. Go left and take the PRIVAT banner. Leave the room. Lock the door with the keys.

Go down, right, right, right, down to the furnace room. Open the furnace and put some coal in. Look at the controls under the door. Push the button on the right, then turn the lever all the way to the right.

Go left then right up the stairs. Go left and up the stairs.

Go upstairs and open the double doors.

Leave the room then go right and through the door at the end to the spotlight room.

Use the spotlight. Turn it on and use the bar to point it at the Mittel Loge.

Go back downstairs. Give Paul the seating chart.

Go back to the theatre office (right, room on the end) and move Gabriel.

OVERTURE

Go to the theatre office and put on the gown. Go back to the spotlight room and look out the window. Use the opera glasses on the Mittel Loge.

ACT ONE

Go back to the double doors. Use the rope, then put the PRIVAT sign over it

ACT TWO

Move left and push the trunk out the way. Use the dagger to open the vent. Go through.

Go up, up, left up the stairs

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE – it’s possible to get stuck in a situation you can’t win from

Look at the base of the ropes and take the tape.

Go right into the dressing room.

Take the costume. Use it with Gabriel. Look at the mirror and take the powder. Use the powder on the mirror. Hide behind the screen. When the actor sits down, use the tape on him

ACT THREE

The objective here is to guide the other wolf into the furnace room by touching the latches at the base of the open doors to close them. Every time you move, he moves too. If you SMELL, you can see where you both are and the state of the doors. If you linger too long in one place, he moves anyway. if he escapes into the theatre, you lose. If you block access to the furnace room or corner him, you lose. So just follow this guide:

Right, Forward, Forward, Left, Left, Close the door
Right, Forward, Left, Left, Close the door
Right, Right, Forward, Forward, Left, Left, Close the door
Right, Forward, Left, Close the door
Right, Forward, Left, Forward, Left, Forward, Left, Left, Close the door
Left, Close the door
Left, Forward, Left, Left, Close the door
Left, Forward, Right, Forward, Close the door
Left, Forward, Right, Forward, Right, Forward, Forward, Forward, Right, Forward, Forward

This should bring you into the furnace room.

Click on Grace

Open the furnace door

Click on Gabriel (the wolf)

Wait until Von Glower starts to jump, then click on him to knock him into the furnace. If your timing is wrong, he escapes and you get shot. As a guide, click when his body is fully extended, before he reaches the furnace door.

FAQ

This isn’t for puzzle solutions – you can find them in the walkthrough. But certain actions need to be done before other ones, so if you find you can’t do something, this should make it clearer what needs doing first.

General

Why doesn’t the game advance even though I’ve read a letter or book?
Often, you have to actually click on the text and have your character read it out before the game progresses. Simply looking at the close-up doesn’t always count. This seems to happen most often with handwritten letters.

Is it possible to get stuck in an unwinnable situation?
Yes, during the Opera segment, if you go into the dressing room without collecting the tape.

Is it possible to die in this game?
Yes. During the hunt at the end of chapter five, during the dressing room scene at the Opera, and during the finale. You’re always given the option to “Try again” though

Chapter One

Why won’t Gabriel write the letter to Grace?
You need to read her letter from your bag first.

How do I get Klingmann out of his office so I can search his coat?
You need to make the splice tape first.

Why won’t Gabriel go into Ubergrau’s office?
You need to read his letter from your bag first.

Why won’t Gabriel go into the hunting club?
You need the receipt from Klingmann’s coat first, and to have read it back-to-front.

Why does Ubergrau say to come back later for the Ritter papers?
You need to complete everything else in this chapter first.

Chapter Two

Why won’t the workman go away?
You need to have tried the locked door, and spoken to Gerde, Huber and the mayor.

Where do I get the dates for the trial records?
They’re in the journal from the library.

Chapter Three

Why do I have things to do but nothing to talk about?
Make sure you’ve been to Ubergrau’s office to collect Grace’s letter, then read it. Then, you can ask people about The Black Wolf

Why won’t Gabriel call Grossberg’s office?
Make sure you’ve been to Ubergrau’s office to collect Grace’s letter, then read it. Then, you can ask Leber about The Black Wolf

How do I get Xavier’s keys? He always comes and goes in the same cut-scene and I don’t have chance to get them!
Make sure you wait in the entrance hall, not in the club lounge.

Chapter Four

What, exactly, do I have to look at in the castle and the museum?
Unfortunately you can’t rely on the “Hint” button on the map as it still flashes even when you’ve done everything… you have to use the tour tape in all the locations in the castle and look at the wolf panels in the Singer’s Hall….and read all the appropriate plaques and letters in the museum, then talk to Frau Miller about the Wagner museum.

Why isn’t Gerde in the crypt?
You have to have your tarot read first.

How do I get the phone call from Professor Barclay?
You have to use the tour tape in all the locations in Neuschwanstein, and read all the appropriate letters and plaques in the Ludwig museum…then talk to Frau Miller about the Wagner museum. The only indication you have the missed call is during a cut-scene when you enter Castle Ritter…so if you’ve over zealous with skipping you might miss it. To be sure, go and use his card on the phone in the library. If Grace says she’s waiting for his call, you haven’t done everything yet.

Why haven’t the lillies sprouted outside the church?
You need to have spoken to Georg about everything plot critical, and you need to have sent your letter to Gabriel for this chapter.

What does putting the lily in the water do? Nothing seems to have changed!
It changes Chaphill’s mind – he’ll send you a fax, and you need to collect it from the post office, but you need to go into the castle first so Gerde can tell you about it.

What am I missing!?
Georg at the Wagner museum is the gatekeeper to the end of this chapter – most of your leads will appear in questions you can ask him, so he’s a good reference to see if you’ve missed anything. If you can’t ask Georg about Wagner and Ludwig’s letter, you need to read them in this museum first.
If you can’t ask Georg about the Wolf Panels, you need to go back to the castle and look at them in the Singer’s Hall at the end. If you can’t ask Georg about the Lost Opera, you need to read about it at the Ludwig museum and then talk to the desk clerk about it. If you’ve done all this, make sure you’ve called Professor Barclay, and that you’ve written and mailed a letter to Gabriel.

Chapter Five

Where are the matches?
The matches appear when the fire is lit, which only happens after you’ve shown Klingmann the tags.

Why won’t Gabriel show Klingmann the tags?
You need to speak with Von Aigner and Hennemann thoroughly first, and investigate Von Zell’s room.

Chapter Six

When does the service at Altotting end?
When you have all three scrolls from Neuschwanstein

Why can’t I go into the inner shrine?
You need to show the priest the silver heart.
