Overview
In this guide, I will tell you how you can easily counter-attack an enemy and how to weaken them A LOT. These instructs has been done by me and it is one of the reasons how I won that game (since the enemy had more powerful and larger army than I had).
When getting attacked
Sometimes when someone calls a war on you, you are not prepared. Of course, you can jump back to autosaves before the war to prepare, but other options can be done too.
Option 1. Buy units and ask other factions for Energy.
Option 2. Retreat our units back to your own base.
You can also do both (no ♥♥♥♥, sherlock), which then will give you help to defend the attack.
IMPORTANT: If you have spies, place them on their capital. If you have enough intrigue, you can vote for coup in the city. I did this, and I got his capital, and he got REALLY mad at me for that. This can be a game changer and is really important to do.
You also want to have allies, if you have other factions listed as “friendly”, then you should not have any problem to ask for alliance (Go to deal then alliance). If one is at war, the other “ally” will automatically start a war against the enemy your ally is against. So if someone calls a war on you, and you go to some other guy and ask for alliance and he says yes, he will automatically start a war against the enemy.
When getting attacked, you would probably say “Well, ♥♥♥♥” when the enemy comes with a massive army towards you. So the thing is; NEVER EVER move your unit, keep them fortified no matter what.
It would also be smart if you had a fortified melee unit on the front lines and a ranged one behind.
When defending against the enemy, it is smart to use the “heal instantly” bonus when you rank up one of your units, because increasing your damage won’t help you after you are dead. So the key point is to keep your units ALIVE as long as possible.
The main point with the first step, is to kill as many of their units as possible.
Getting rid of their units and knowing when to counter-attack
After you get the option to make peace (which means he is not really confident anymore) then it’s time to strike. Don’t go inside the enemies borders, go for the enemy which are outside their borders (city attacks are very powerful). When you find out that he no longer wants peace, then it’s time to stand back and fortify, since he will most likely attack again.
You should always check if he wants peace or not, because if he wants one, he won’t get one.
Counter-Attack
After some time, your spy will tell you if you succeed couping the city or not. If you were not lucky enough, keep trying.
Now you are ready to strike, bring atleast 4-6 units with you (some can defend the homebase).
The first thing you want to do is to check your surroundings, incase that you are going to get flanked. ALWAYS attack with your ranged first and continue it with a deadly melee unit.
If you manage to capture that city, you should HOLD it. The reason for this is, they will get angry at you and will counter-counter-attack. This can be deadly, since your units are hurt from the city attacks and because of the units stationed in that city. So before going any further, you should fortify.
If you managed to push them back off, or they didn’t come. You may want to take a look at his peace offer, he will cry for mercy and give you sometimes a lot. In my case, he gave me a city.
If you want to completely destroy him, then… do it. Won’t really be any harder after you have taken their capital and some other city.

The war has started (I am the slavic)
I took his capital with a spy, counter-attacked his new capital and got another city via peace offer.
