Overview
As the title says, this is a detailed composition of currently known information about the recent 1.4.0 update’s new feature, crafting. All of this information was collected by me in this current version of the game; it might change with future patches, and it is definitely incomplete as of now. I will update the guide as more information becomes publicly available and/or when I progress further into my new playthrough. If you have any suggestions or corrections to make, feel free to leave them in the comments.
Introduction
Crafting in this game is fairly simple; as early on as in the tutorial, you can craft things by going into your inventory and clicking on the craft tab near the bottom. It seems that, for the most part, crafting is meant to complement your builds. Some of these are pretty intuitive (crafting medical kits with first aid) and some are not (you need weird science, not big guns, to make flamethrower fuel). The more complicated part is getting recipes, and that’s what this guide primarily focuses on.
In what has been discovered so far, certain trends have emerged:
- With more common items like ammo and medical kits, only scrap is required for crafting, which basically allows you to buy these items on the go by using scrap as currency without needing merchants. However, this should be a last resort, as crafting such items costs the same amount of scrap as it would cost dollars to buy the same items without any barter/reputation discounts.
- Pretty much every normal item requires scrap to craft; special items do not, and instead use various junk items. Be wary that many of these items are still labeled as junk in your inventory and not as crafting components, so be mindful of what you sell once you find a recipe you are interested in.
- Weapon and armor mods basically allow you to pay scrap in order to upgrade your mods. Note, however, that this system is NOT exhaustive. Some mods can not be crafted or upgraded. It is unknown whether this is due to bugs/oversights or if the developers intentionally left some mods uncraftable for balance reasons. Some mod recipes can only be learned from blueprints instead of leveling up the modding skills, too.
- Playing on the harder skill checks option does not affect crafting requirements or the skill levels at which you learn recipes.
I try to keep spoilers to a minimum, but some spoilers are unavoidable when talking about unique gear and plan locations.
Please note that this guide is composed of information I personally gathered, so in its current state it is far from complete and will be updated as time goes on.
Skill-Related Recipes, Part 1/2
These recipes are the most basic – level up your skills high enough and you automatically unlock the recipes. This also works retroactively; logging in to an old save from before the update will immediately teach you all the skill-based recipes for which you are eligible. As far as I have been able to test, they only unlock from raising one skill; there are no recipes that need a specific perk or multiple different skills.
As of now, the only skills that give you crafting recipes are armor modding, automatic weapons, explosives, first aid, mechanics, small arms, sniper rifles, weapon modding, and weird science.
Skill-Related Recipes, Part 2/2
“Mystery Item” Special Recipes
These recipes are less certain at the moment. They generally require very specific materials, and you learn the recipe for a “mystery item” as soon as you pick up one of these materials. The item you are crafting only becomes revealed once you craft it for the first time. It seems that these do not have any skill requirements. Note that most of the resources for these items are still classified as “junk” by the game, so be careful if you intend to craft them.
– 20x Scrap, 1x Working Mix Tape
The mix tape can be crafted by obtaining through a small chain of crafting involving the “Denver Ordnance” bunker in the east of the map. This plan is only learned after crafting the working mix tape.
It just plays some music from the OST. The sound doesn’t seem to last very long, though.
– 1x Troy’s Diary, 1x Brandi’s Diary
Both can be found in downtown Colorado Springs, in snow piles. One is close to the clothes store, the other is near the dumpsters to the right of the nightclub entrance.
When fused together, they create a lore book describing part of their relationship. It appears that this book does not count towards the lore book achievement.
– 1x Dog [Feces]
Exactly what the name says, you can find a couple of these buried near the chicken coop in Ranger HQ.
This seems to either be a joke item or an early debug tool used for testing crafting. You use dog [feces] to craft dog [feces], so nothing changes. However, unlike other crafting items, you can not craft more than one at a time.
– 1x The Bard’s Tale Floppy Disk, 1x Cloak and Dagger ROM
The floppy disk can be found in a locker in MacTavish’s room, in Colorado Springs.
The Cloak and Dagger ROM is found at the Gett Family Homestead, inside a safe (lockpicking 7) in a room with three dead raiders.
– 1x Kitboodle, 1x Repair Kit
Unlike the other mystery items, this is NOT immediately unlocked upon picking up the kitboodle. Instead, it is obtained after looting the “Denver Ordnance” bunker in the east corner of the map, which gives you the mix tape with pencil stuck in hole.
– 1x Ken’s Shriveled Junk, 1x Mustache Wax
Ken’s junk can be looted off Charlie after killing him, at least in the Bizarre outskirts. This might also be the case in Brygo’s casino.
Mustache wax can be bought for $10 ($9 with barter/ranger discount) from Ananda Rabindranath. Although he will no longer offer it once he moves to HQ, you can still buy it by moving over to the junk tab.
This is a utility item that gives you +1 quick slots.
– 1x Mix Tape With Pencil Stuck in Hole, 1x Pencil Removal Kit
The mix tape is found in the “Denver Ordnance bunker”, in the east corner of the map. The pencil removal kit can be crafted, but only after picking up the mix tape.
This plan only unlocks after crafting a pencil removal kit.
– 1x sad banana, 1x brain jar
– 1x Leopard Print Handcuffs, 1x Candy Cane Cat ‘o Nine Tails, 1x Broken Cage
The handcuffs are found in a desk at the Ranger HQ brig after Hope moves in as the warden.
The candy cane is found in a small building in the back of Santa’s Workshop, in a locked container (lockpicking 8+).
– 39x Scrap, 1x Snake Squeezins, 1x Oddly-Shaped Container, 1x Worm in Formaldehyde
The worm can be found in the Colorado Springs museum, inside the room that requires turning on a generator.
– 1x Billy’s Kangaroo Facts, 1x Dice
The fact book can be found in one of the Payaso buildings in the Bizarre exterior, where the clowns are training by shooting down some props.
– 1x Football, 1x Human Bones, 1x Human Teeth, 1x Tangled Clown Wig, 1x Toad Tongue, 1x Muscle Tissue, 1x Pig Skin, 2x Toad Eye
Although this shows up as “mystery item” until crafted, it is learned from a recipe. The recipe for this is found in the Sans Luxe apartments, in apartment 5, behind a locked door (lockpicking 3).
Schematic Ammo
Aside from skills and finding specific items, you can also learn to craft more items by finding schematics around the game world. These generally include the more useful items, but it also means they are hard-locked behind game progression. These recipes are instantly learned after picking up the schematics.
– 1x Scrap
– Requires sniper rifles 1 to craft
The plans for this are found in Santa’s Workshop, in a locker inside his private room (lockpicking 8+).
– 6x Scrap
– Requires automatic weapons 5 to craft
The plans for these are found in the Bizarre, in the red locker after defeating Dr. Smiles.
– 17x Scrap, 1x Muscle Tissue
– Requires 3 weird science to craft
The plans to make these are found in the Colorado Springs gardens, inside a locker (locksmith 1) of a fenced-off area between the first and second Dorsey fights. You also need to power up the generator to open the gate.
Although the frozen ferret launcher becomes somewhat obsolete fairly quickly, it has always been an interesting weapon, and the introduction of this plan makes it much easier to sustain as it is difficult to find merchants stocking large amounts of them.
– 29x Scrap
– Requires weapon modding 5 to craft
The plans for this are immediately learned upon crafting a grenade launcher.
Schematic Deployables/Grenades
– 99x Scrap, 1x Titanium Plating, 1x Remote Control Chip, 1x Frag Grenade
– Requires mechanics 3 to craft
The plan for this is found in Broadmoor Heights, in the Ward home, in a locked container next to the solar panel (lockpicking 3).
It is a deployable that requires mechanics 2 to use. At the end of the turn you deploy it, it gains the “primed” ability, and will then run towards enemies and blow up at the start of the next turn. Not sure if the damage scales with anything, but it seemed to be in the range of 150-200 for me. Not a bad idea for longer fights with enemies grouped up behind cover.
– 30x Scrap, 1x Frag Grenade
– Requires explosives 1 to craft
This plan is found in Ditso Gago’s safe in the Warrens. You can either open it (lockpicking 7) or kill him and loot his key.
The weapon itself doesn’t do much, just sprays some confetti as the name says.
– 47x Scrap, 1x Icy Carapace Shard
– Requires explosives 1 to craft
The recipe is purchased from Sister Nancy Forge in Denver (base price $375).
– 40x Scrap, 1x Frag Grenade, 1x Laser Emitter

The recipe is purchased from Sister Nancy Forge in Denver (base price $375).
– 40x Scrap, 1x Frag Grenade, 1x Acidic Sludge
– Requires explosives 5 to craft
The plans can be purchased from Sanctified Piscitelli in the Bizarre (base price of $375).
It is a grenade with no skill requirements that poisons everybody in its range.
– 45x Scrap, 1x Optical Sensor, 1x Focusing Crystal
– Requires mechanics 5 to craft
Can be purchased from Vivisecto in the Denver Machine Commune (base price of $375).
– 16x Scrap, 1x Frag Grenade, 1x Reactor Core
– Requires weird science 4 to craft
The plans are found in a locked safe (lockpicking 4) in Irv’s room in the Sans Luxe apartment.
These grenades require weird science 1 to use, and apply a shrunk effect that lowers enemy damage by 35%.
– 16x Scrap, 1x Frag Grenade, 1x Purified Tar
– Requires explosives 5 to craft
The plans can be purchased from Sanctified Piscitelli in the Bizarre (base price of $250).
It is a grenade with no skill requirements to use that gives everybody in its range the concealed status, which raises evasion significantly.
– 300x Scrap, 1x Guardian, 1x Crippling Linkage
– Requires weapon modding 10 to craft
The plans for this can be found in Denver, in the little power room with a subsystem terminal directly to the right of the Reagan statue, leading down into the oil field.
– 121x Scrap, 10x Yellow Snowball, 1x Snake Squeezins, 1x Frag Grenade
– Requires 3 explosives to craft
The plans to make these are found in Colorado Springs, in the Marshal armory room (lockpicking 4).

The plans can be looted from Dos-Teh-Seh in the Department of Energy building.
– 682x Scrap, 1x Holographic Scope
– Requires weapon modding 8 to craft
These plans can be found in the bunker just south of the clown museum.
– 2986x Scrap, 1x Reactor Core
– Requires weapon modding 8 to craft
The plans are found in the Tellurium Mine, in a grenade box right next to the entrance to the mine. It is hidden somewhat out of the way; as soon as you enter the mine, check the right for a gate that leads into a small opening in the cave walls.
– 532x Scrap, 1x Max Capacity Mag
– Requires weapon modding 7 to craft
This plan can be obtained by looting the bunker between Colorado Springs and the Hoon Homestead.
– 2536x Scrap, 1x Focusing Crystal

– 375x Scrap
– Requires weapon modding 6 to craft
The plan can be found in a container next to Nina at the Gett Family Homestead.
This mod adds +8 damage and a +25% chance to apply bleed for any weapon with an underbarrel attachment slot. Although you need 6 weapon modding to make it, you need 8 to actually apply it.
– 1159x Scrap, 1x Hammerforge-Rifled Barrel
– Requires weapon modding 8 to craft
The plans for this can be found in the “Snowed Inn” Resort, in Nelius Dorsey’s safe.

The plans for this are found in Denver, in the Machine Commune, in an overturned locker (lockpicking 5) in the first room full of drools.
Schematic Weapons
– 450x Scrap, 1x Hydraulic Hammer, 1x HE Capsule
– Requires weapon modding 10 to craft
The plans for this are found in Denver, in the Godfisher camp in the mountains. It is looted from the safe (lockpicking 7) that a very weak Godfisher NPC is fumbling with.
– 51x Scrap, 8x Punctured Clown Nose
– Requires weapon modding 3 to craft
The recipe for this is found on a corpse in the Warrens, in the same hall as the ladder leading up to Dr. Smiles’s clinic.
As a weapon, it is fairly mediocre. It falls between the glass knuckles and rebar knuckles in terms of stats, so it will become obsolete quickly to an unarmed build. However, it also gives the inspire ability, which gives all your nearby teammates +5% hit chance and +10% crit chance for one turn.
– 300x Scrap, 1x Tactical Shotgun, 1x HE Fuse Linkage
– Requires weapon modding 10 to craft
The plans for this can be found in the “Snowed Inn” Resort, in one of the large crates in Nelius Dorsey’s room.

The plan for this is obtained in an electronic safe (nerd stuff 8+) in the hall leading to Morningstar in Union Station.
– 450x Scrap, 1x Incinerator, 1x Toxic Linkage
– Requires 10 weird science to craft
The plans for this item are found in the Clown Museum tent, inside a safe (lockpicking 8+).
Although you can find this recipe fairly early on, it requires an end-game flamethrower and mod, so you are unlikely to be able to use it for a while.
Schematic Other Items
– 22x Scrap, 1x Tin Can
The plans for this are found in the Clown Museum, in a container inside the room that requires a pressure plate.
It seems to serve no functional purpose. You can blow the air horn, even in combat, but it does not draw enemy attention or cause any status effects.
– 70x Scrap, 6x Burned Book
The plans are found in a container on the left side of the Arapaho Caravan location. Unsure if saving them first is required for this to be accessible.
This is a helmet that provides +1 armor, +2 seconds to detection time, +10% sneak attack damage, and -0.4 combat speed.
– 4x Scrap, 1x Acidic Sludge, 1x Black Sludge
The recipe for this is found in a container inside the bar in Union Station.

Battle of Steeltown DLC Armor
– 260x Scrap, 18x Tellurium Steel
– Requires armor modding 5 to craft
The plans for this set are stolen from Markham’s personal safe. If you do not kill her, you can break into her room (behind her, to her right, lockpick 5) while the rebellion is going on, and use her secret gun rack to open the safe. You need to unlock the safety, load a bullet, and then fire it. As long as you open the door to her quarters, nobody will mind or turn hostile upon you entering her room, even after the area is reloaded and there are guard bots stationed around the room.
