Common Deaths

Common Deaths are defined as ways you’d die to enemies in most levels, and includes mission-specific enemies and bosses that kill in identical fashion.

Beaten

Earliest level: ‘The Metro’
Source: blunt weapons and fists
Notes: Jacket’s neck breakage and other left/right injuries are independent of enemy melee attack

Slashed

Earliest level: ‘The Metro’
Source: knives, The Biker (‘Neighbors’), and The Ninja Girl (‘Showdown’)
Notes: the two bosses leave cuts of the same severity as knives do, even though your katanas (as Jacket) and cleavers (when you’re Biker) are more severe

Shot

Earliest level: ‘No Talk’
Source: all guns, The SWAT Sniper (‘Crackdown’), shotgun pellets
Notes: bullets survived do not influence bullet holes when killed; bullets survived are reset when changing floors; small chance to survive a bullet without Rufus the Elephant; Earl the Walrus does not protect the wearer from bullets

Buckshot

Earliest level: ‘No Talk’
Source: Shotguns, The SWAT Sniper (‘Crackdown’) and (rarely) two enemy guns at the same time
Notes: The SWAT Sniper makes this kind of kill somewhat more often than Shot

Bitten

Earliest level: ‘Tension’
Source: Dogs, Panthers (‘Showdown’)
Notes: only one death sprite, though timing of dog/panther bite will vary

Level-Specific Deaths

Level-Specific Deaths are defined as deaths that happen in only one level and no-where else.

Blown Away

Level: ‘Tension’
Source: booby-trapped doors opened when you’re too close
Notes: camera will not follow Jacket as he’s blown away; Jacket will pass through walls; worn masks and human shields disappear

Roadkilled

Level: ‘Deadline’
Source: Black Van
Notes: Fastest way to die from a restart; can bump into the side as the Van stops to get Roadkilled; masks disappear

Burned

Level: ‘Deadline’
Source: Van Driver’s molotovs
Notes: Heads-Up Display (HUD) disappears from this death; Jacket’s fiery death is ambiguous with enemy deaths; sound of glass breaking upon character ignition; can ignore fire by taking a human shield; masks disappear

Caught

Level: ‘Trauma’
Source: Police, Doctors
Notes: technically a death, as Jacket would either be sentenced to death or be captured by the Russian mafia… the latter of which is constantly happening around you

Tazed

Level:‘Assault’
Source: Detectives
Notes: recent wounds likely make this lethal; the only animated death for Jacket; animation stops after a random time; Jacket’s hair disappears

Conclusion

Thank you for taking the time to look over the kind of work Dennaton Games and Devolver Digital put into every unfortunate demise and instance of karma being dished out.
