overview

This is a simple and short guide on:

1. unlocking webber
2. 10min guide on surviving forever
3. taking care of common crisis – seasons / big bosses / etc

this assumes you know basics of the game – i.e. at least played for 3-4 hours 🙂

1. unlocking webber

here are the key points.
– Webber cannot be unlocked by gaining XP
– To unlock Webber, the player has to find his skull by killing tonnes of Spiders (rare drop)
– Once you have it, make a shovel, find a grave, dig the grave, bury Webber’s skull in the grave
– Boom! you unlocked him.

On killing spiders:
– most people will make small traps for this
– put 2-3 traps around the spider’s nest
– hit the nest to taunt spiders from it (during the day)
– lure spiders into traps – they die instantly without a fight

2. webber surviving forever

once you unlocked webber and started a new game with webber…

– you start with a few monster meat and a spider’s nest

Monster meat
– webber has the advantage of eating monster meat with no penalty on sanity and health
– monster meat is perhaps the most abundant meat you can find
– web

affinity with spiders
– spiders are neutral to webber, unless webber starts the fight first – i.e. being the one that ‘hits the spider’, agroing every other spidey in sight.
– webber walks at normal speed on web – fantastic for kiting hounds/ etc on spider land.
– webber is strongest around spider’s nest as any mob walking on the web will agro spiders to spawn from the nest and attack – effectively definding webber.

** THE TRICK ** (it is so overpowered, it will likely be nerfed)
– on 1st day, walk around till you find a spider’s nest, gathering basic food and materials along the way. once you do, plant your nest (your starting item) nearby
– if you find 2-3 nests together, you can save your nest for another location.
– wait till dusk, and spiders start coming out…
– make sure you have 1x meat (or any meat from trapping rabbits, spiders etc)
– feed 1x meat to a spider.
– when webber feeds spiders with meats, 1-4 spiders will get allied with webber
– usually that is 3-4 spiders for a small nest, and the other nest’s spiders remain neutral to webber.
– left click on a neutral (not allied) spider to send your allied spiders to attack.
– this will start a mini war between 2 nests – this can be a massive war when nests grow or spawn off new nests.
– stand in the middle of fighting spiders and hold on to space to collect a tonne of loot that falls off dead spiders.
– if you are too slow, monster meats will get eaten by spiders.
– spiders drop 3 things
> silk – incredibly useful, allows you to make top hat for incredible sanity/min, and many useful things
> spider’s gland – recover 8 health with each of this! or make it into healing salve for 20 health!
*mini pro tip – you need stone (easy to get) and ash – simply burn stacks of Pine Cone to get a tonne of ash!
> monster meat – webber eats this raw to recover hunger, with no penalty on sanity or health!

With the above –
– you will have NEVER get hungry with limitless monster meat.
– you will have great health recovery with so much gland/ healing salve (still use log armor please)
– you will have great sanity recovery (3.3/min) with limitless silk to make Top Hats (6x silk), and other things.
*mini pro tip –
– when you progress to EASILY kill spider queen’s with method (turning her soldiers against her with just 1-2 monster meats) – however sanity loss is a problem when fighting many queens.
– to counter this – eat cooked green mushrooms – which are COMMON during dusk/ evenings. they give *15* sanity back instantly with small penalty on hunger and health (which is not a problem with so much meat and glands). you can easily recover sanity by 3+ mushrooms.

There you go. after you got above figured out – 1-20 days would be a breeze (until winter… ^^)

3. dealing with crisis…

‘Don’t Starve’ has a great system of weather, bosses, etc which adds very interesting challenges to your gameplay. one of the best I ever played 🙂

Hence, even though you can survive forever with tactic in previous section, you will still be at the mercy of…

1. hounds (small problem)
– they come every 10 days (starting/ sandbox mode) – simply kite them around spider’s nest to agro spiders to help you.
* mini pro tip – mobs walking on web agros spiders to spawn and investigate the location where web is disturbed. hounds move so fast that agro’d spiders may not discover them in time. make sure you do a quick U-turn to lead hounds back to spiders to engage.

2. spider queens
– you will surely encounter these, as nests grow bigger and spawns queens at the last level. often, you will find a few queens roaming around after 10-20 days of undisturbed growth.
– while all spiders, including queens are neutral to webber, spider queens still inflict a devastating sanity loss when close.
– simply wait till dusk where spiders spawn from nests – tame them with monster meats, along with spiders spawned by the spider queen…
– and send them onto the spider queen!!!
– when spider queen retaliates, other spiders from nearby nests will attack her too!
– queens go down quite fast this way, but several queens can wipe out an entire fleet of tiny spiders. so make sure you take queens down 1 at a time.
– also, if you stand in the middle to collect loot – you will LOSE a tonne of sanity amongst so many spider queens.
– besides getting rid of heavy sanity loss – spider queens drop useful spider’s eggs (same as Webber’s starting item) that lets you spawn another nest.
– the spider’s mask that lets you control spiders don’t seem very useful to webber, as all he needs to tame spiders are very commonly available monster meat.

3. tree bosses / tentacles / pigs / merms / frogs / bees…
– simply use the tactic above to kill them. nothing can stop you. nothing!!!

4. nothing except WEATHER. this kills all unprepared players. this section is more generic, I just like to add some simple points:

– WINTER: try to stay in a thick/ large forest, to have easy access to wood. this keeps fires burning as it is not easy to move around in the cold.
– SUMMER: my 50 day webber died unprepared for this. summer, it gets so hot, you simply lose health due to the heat (much like Winter cold)
> unlike winter, where you simply put down a fire to combat cold (which you always have for nights) – summer REQUIRE preparation. without materials on hand, trying to survive when heat damage starts is close to impossible.
> ice is your best bet, but if you haven’t been mining ice during winter – they are all gone in summer!
> your next best alternative is – Endothermic Fire. this produce ‘coolness’, as opposed by a regular camp fire that produce heat. it is powered by Nitre – mined from regular rocks (those that you ignored because they don’t drop nuggets). good thing they are still available during summer, unlike ice.
> edit: actually easiest way to survive summer = heat stones in a fridge. awesome. also, your fridge seems immune to fire! my whole camp was burnt down cept my fridge.. wonder if that is luck…
That is it! hope it is useful 🙂
