Westmark Manor - Curse Guide for Westmark Manor

Westmark Manor – Curse Guide

Overview

A comprehensive guide on curses, their affects, and how to cleanse them. A work in progress, tips are welcome!

Curse Status & How They’re Obtained

First and foremost, how does one attract a curse?

For the most part, curses are inflicted while you’re exploring the manor and come across a swarm of demonic hands coming up from the ground. They’re impossible to avoid (unless there’s a unique relic that protects players from encountering them, the fact currently stands) and can be very frustrating.

*From personal experience, these demonic swarms seem to appear more frequently while exploring the basement areas.

Each curse is different and, at the same time, will steal an amount out of the player’s sanity bar.
(Sanity Points are unaffected by curses, it’s your overall health that is of concern)

Next, how do you know what kind of curse you’ve been inflicted with?

You can go into your inventory and on the bottom-left corner you’ll see the title of the curse and a vague description of what befalls you.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to tell just how a curse affects the player without gaining first-hand knowledge; seeing what happens and making a note of it later.

How To Cleanse Curses

The only way to get rid of a curse is to use a special item called Purging Powder.

This powder only needs to be used once per curse; it does not prevent curses!
Furthermore, as you explore the underground levels of the manor – and progress further in the game – you’ll encounter curses more often. So be sure to carry as much of these with you as possible!

This is a rather uncommon item, and you’d be incredibly lucky to find one sitting in a cupboard, bookshelf, or urn while exploring the manor.

There are two ways you can obtain it:

You can buy Purging Powder from the Trader, an ominous figure who lurks in the doorway of the Conduit room – in exchange for some of your precious Sanity Points.
The Trader’s item selection is random each visit; so if you go visit his chambers and check his inventory – and don’t see what you want to buy – you can leave the room and go right back in and check again!

Or, you can craft Purging Powder yourself!

This requires you finding the Crafting Kit in one of the Alchemy Rooms in the manor and collecting a few key ingredients in order to make the powder. Also, before you can craft Purging Powder, you’ll need to search for books found throughout the manor to find the recipe to use with the Crafting Kit – the recipe locations are randomized, so be vigilant in your search!

Ingredients:

*2 Clays
*1 Sunstone

After obtaining the Crafting Kit, the Purging Powder Recipe, and its ingredients, you can now use the Crafting Kit and select the recipe and play a short grid puzzle. You need to have all three ingredients in their individual slots and their connecting lines must be green in order to craft it!

It’s a lot more cost effective to gather ingredients and make the powder yourself and stock up as much as you like – and you can keep your Sanity Points for buying other relics from the Trader or saving your game’s progress!!

Curse List

The following is a list of curses that have been encountered in the game with an inclusion of the experienced effects!

Some can affect your gameplay (how you read your map, you move in the opposite direction), and some can outright kill you. So remember to carry a good supply of Purging Powder to cleanse them!

((This list is still growing, feel free to add more in the comments below!))

Blight Of Perception: You are more sensitive to the darkness.
This curse lasts about 300 seconds/5 minutes and counts down before it loses its effectiveness.

Chart Anathema: You have trouble reading your map.
Chunks of the map are faded out and illegible; you’re only able to see the immediate areas around you while viewing your map screen!

Ominous Perdition: Horrors will haunt you.
{Effects currently unknown}

Unholy Shell: Relics have no effect.
Special items (crowns, pendants, etc.) are rendered useless in boosting your stats while under this curse. (You’ll notice that you’ll move slower, your lantern’s light doesn’t last as long, etc.)

Without Imprecation: Every time you save it costs +1 Sanity Point.
It now takes 2 Sanity Points to save your game!
