Overview
This guide is for people who don’t know what mask to use for what they want to achieve. This guide is not about the best mask, but about the most appropriate one for your playstyle. [The mask that are not featured in this guide are not placeable in any of these categories]
Melee Masks
The melee masks are the most efficient masks if you’re the stealthy assassin who prefer fast, gore and silent explosion of blood and brain with only the power of your two arms. There is six melee mask in the game. Tony, Don Juan, Dennis, Willem, Charlie, and Carl. Each of them have a lot to do with melee weapons.
The mask “Tony” is one of the first mask you get in the game, which come after achieving a high score on “No Talk”. Tony have powerful and killer fists. His fists are as fast as regular fists but hits harder (one-shot). Tony could be a good choice for the most advance players because of his faster ground kill.
The mask “Don Juan” get unlock when you get the high score on the chapter “Decadence”. Don Juan can use door as a melee weapon by only passing through them (with an enemy standing on the other side). Using Don Juan will make it easier for you to kill enemies that have a patern which always lead in front of a door.
The mask “Dennis” come pretty early in the game. You get “Dennis” after getting a high score in “Full House”. Dennis use a knife, which is the fastest melee weapon in the game (the knife is as fast as the baton). I highly recommend to use Dennis if you want to be fast and stealthy.
The mask “Willem” can get unlock by achieving the high score on the level “Hot & Heavy”. Willem is consider a melee weapon mask because of it’s off-ground ground kill. Pressing SPACE next to an enemy will kill the enemy (bare handed) and steal the weapon of the said enemy.
The mask “Charlie” can be found as the Biker in the chapter “Safehouse”. Charlie is useful if you want to use a bigger variety of melee weapons because he increase the amount of melee weapons spawning at the different spawn points in the level. Charlie is not really useful when you start a chapter or when there’s no good melee weapon on these spawn points.
The mask “Carl” can be found as Jacket in the chapter “Push It”. Carl use a drill to knock down people and then drill a hole threw the enemies’ head. Because of it’s extremly low melee force, you get bonus point everytime you drill a guy’s brain. I don’t recommend Carl if you play a chapter for the first time, only if you want to get an A+ on a chapter.
Gun Masks
If you are a big fan of big badass guns, you should use these firearm masks. There is not a lot of rifle masks in the game, there is only five. There is Aubrey, Rami, Peter, Rick, and Richter. All of these have something to do with guns.
The mask “Aubrey” is unlocked by gettin’ a high score on the chapter “Overdose”. Aubrey is kind of like Charlie but with guns. He is useful if you want to use a bigger variety of guns. If you don’t want to use a bigger variety of gun, Aubrey is mostly useless.
The mask “Rami” can be unlock by getting the high score on the level “Crackdown”. The mask Rami could be useful for some kind of camping (camping is Hotline Miami: shooting a bullet of a non-silence rifle with the intention of alerting enemies to kill them all at the same spot) with a rifle.
The mask “Peter” can get unlock by achieving a high score in the chapter “Deadline”. Peter could be very useful in a level fill with enemies and guns, because sometimes there’s just too many enemies for the amount of ammo you have, and you don’t want to camp to much.
The mask “Rick” is unlocked by getting a high score on the chapter “Safehouse”. Rick is not the most useful mask for an advance player because with time, you get better at aiming and moving in Hotline Miami. It’s would be useful for a beginner but since you unlock it at the end of the game, it’s pretty useless.
The mask “Richter” can be found in the level “Assault”. Richter use the silenced Uzi, which have a fast shooting speed (the fastest). Because of it, you lose ammo fast. Using Richter is not a really good idea because you’ll only kill 3-4 people with the Uzi.
Special Features Masks
There is quite a few of these special features masks in the game. All of these masks change some feature of the game, make it easier. There is eight of them. There is Graham, George, Ted, Rufus, Brandon, Louie, Earl, and Jake. These have all a bonus coming with the mask.
The mask “Graham” can be unlock by getting the high score on “Tension”. Graham have the ability to walk faster. He is useful for a quick run n’ kick (which is in Hotline Miami: running toward an enemy or a group of enemy to kill/knock him/them).
The mask “George” gets unlocked by gettin’ a high score on “Clean Hit”. George can, by pressing SHIFT look further than normal. Useful when you’re trying to get an achievement which requiert spawning points to be seen from far away.
The mask “Ted” get unlock by getting the high score on “Neighbors”. Dogs are friendly when you wear the mask Ted, which is very useful in a chapter full of dogs. Sometime you can’t find a melee weapon quickly enough to kill a dog, use Ted then.
The mask “Rufus” can be unlock by getting the high score on the level “Push It”. Rufus can survive one bullet, which could be useful in a map full of russians with guns.
The mask “Brandon” gets unlocked by achieving the highest score on “Fun & Games”. Brandon is similar to Graham but only faster, which make Graham useless when Brandon unlocked.
The mask “Louie” can only be obtained by beating the game with the normal ending. When wearing the mask Louie, the enemies have difficulties to spot you quickly. It could be useful in a level where there’s too many enemies that you need to kill them one by one.
The mask “Earl” can be found on the level “Overdose”. Earl is bugged at the moment, and his only ability don’t work, so the mask is useless but will probably get fix. With the mask Earl, you can take two bullets before dying.
The mask “Jake” can be found on the level “Hot & Heavy”. Jake is very useful when you don’t have any bullet left in your gun, you can just throw it at the enemy. Jake lends well levels with alot of small rooms and narrow halls where a single throw can kill two or three Russians in a single throw. Another thing I found this mask good if you need to get the jump on a guy when you burst through a door.
