White Day Ghosts Collection Guide And More for White Day: A Labyrinth Named School

White Day Ghosts Collection Guide And More

Overview

A guide to every single Miscellaneous item, Ghost Story and Ghost encounter in the game. There was no coordinated written guide for such a formidable task (at least on Steam) so I decided I would make my own. There are some extra things as well like how to escape Janitors.

Overview

Completing the ghost collection is easier said than done and requires extensive item collecting, backtracking and completing arguably obscure puzzles with said collected items. The solutions to progressing in the main game already have a reputation for being pretty cryptic, with the completion of the entire ghost collection taking it to the extremes. The purpose of this guide will be to make such a venture as simple and hassle free as possible and will also include hints and solutions to the optional puzzles required to complete the Ghost Collection for the PS4/PC remastered version of White Day. I also thought I may as well include a few extra things as well outside of the Ghost Collection, most noticeably information on the Janitors as backtracking will be necessary later on and also because it seems to be one of the most complained about parts of the game due to their difficulty.

Remember that this guide isn’t a walkthrough and will be written in a way assuming you already know what to do or that you will figure it out yourself and are at least familiar with the layout of the sections, though information on this game’s iconic Stalkers will still come in handy for those having trouble. Everything in this guide is a focus on all the optional stuff and strategies with the Janitors.

If any other purpose the creation of this guide serves, it’s to get my creative juices flowing, enhance my observational skills and give me a good exercise in guide writing. It’s my first proper guide so I’ll have a lot to learn from this experience. Another pleasant side effect is that Hell mode is a rice cakewalk all of a sudden.

Basics

All ghosts require the lights off, even the complusory ghosts are never encountered with the lights on.
Played on hard mode which compared to normal simply means fewer hits and more potential sources of damage thanks to the appearance of the ghosts, thankfully there are actually not that many optional ghosts in the game that can actually hurt you anyways and if you deal with the Janitors properly you can easily get away with not getting hit by them once the entire game. Some ghost encounters can appear on difficulties as low as super easy however these have a low rate of spawning and for the sake of completing the Ghost collection the game is best played on hard difficulty where they are guaranteed under the right conditions. Make sure your health only has minor blood spray or less before triggering a ghost to be safe.

Miscellaneous items are typically required to trigger ghost encounters or unlock Ghost Stories while Ghost Stories and Ghost Encounters are necessary to complete Ghost Collections. This guide is written under the assumption that ghosts are collected if you trigger their unique attack scene and survive* or complete their trials as with the Mannequin Ghost. The Ghost Collection is accumulative and also doesn’t require finishing a playthrough to count as collected. However if you’re not going to be doing a second playthrough or intend to play as Yoo Ji-Min on the next playthrough than you will want to complete the Ghost Collection on your first.

The Ghost Collection can only be completed as Lee Hee-Min. Yoo Ji-Min cannot access certain locations on her route and cannot obtain Ghost Collection related items or Ghost Stories.

*Tested with Library Ghost by accident. Nothing like learning things the hard way.

General Janitor Tips

Some basic pointers regarding both Janitors

  • High chance of returning to Alert mode after two closed doors and you stop sprinting
  • Will typically enter rooms you enter in Alert mode, especially the case with bathrooms
  • Will check opened doors on patrol
  • Be careful with opening or closing doors when the Janitor is nearby
  • Sprinting can be the cause of a second or extended Chase mode
  • Will go to the last point of sprinting heard if they lose sight of you
  • Will not enter a room with both doors closed unless they can hear your footsteps or the lights are on (there are however specific rooms that the Janitor will always investigate on patrol regardless like the workshop in section 1)
  • Can’t see you crouching behind a desk regardless of how tall it is even with the lights on
  • Have a detection range that changes on different difficulties
  • Will detect you if you sneak too close to them except when you are hugging desks

The game is more forgiving than you would think

Difficulty Patch

The information I have included on Janitors is also based on my very first playthrough of the game. I’ve noticed that they were ironically significantly more easier to escape on hard mode on my latest playthrough than they were on my first normal one, around the time it was first released, which means they have had their difficulty patched. For example it used to be if they saw you go into a bathroom while chasing or were tailing closely, you would get caught; now they don’t even check the cubicle you’re in even if you sprint into it. Note they will still check your cubicle if they see you go into it. Generally Janitors have had been made easier with the patches by having other aspects rebalanced as well.

However I only really bothered to test out my theory of how actually easy they were to escape after finishing the guide. Despite this my tips on Janitors should still be useful for hell mode where they have vastly increased detection range and their A.I is improved, and in any other case is just a bit more precautious with dealing with them. It’s also good to have alternatives to just hiding in the bathroom all the time which over-reliance would hinder progress otherwise.

Maybe a little too forgiving sometimes

Main Building, Section 1

The first stage in the game consisting of two floors. 1st Floor chase enders are the bathrooms if you are caught in the north and the Main Office behind the far back desk if you are caught in the south. In the 2nd floor you also have the bathrooms to hide in if you are caught in the north and the Broadcasting room behind a desk. The area where you first encounter The Woman Who Hung Herself, unlocked with the Audiotorium key, is an evasion point where you can curve around the Janitor to escape him in that dead end. Of course the classrooms themselves are effective ways to evade and change direction but keep in mind you want some considerable distance to hide from him properly otherwise he will be sprinting into the room or prevent successful hiding in a bathroom cubicle. Always close the doors behind you.

The Janitors in this game will typically enter any room you enter last while in Alert mode, especially the bathrooms. If you hide in the bathrooms in this section he tends to either leave for another floor or enter the eastern corridors while also conveniently shutting the door behind him and allowing you to sneak away. I have included some basic pointers on the maps included in the Playing Yoo Ji-min section, 1st floor is the same concept.

By the time you unlock the 2nd staircase he should be a piece of cake as easy as lying down to eat rice cake to evade without hiding to be honest, especially when you backtrack here later on fresh from the New Building. Just get some distance from him after closing a couple of doors on him, do a loop around, than stop sprinting and you should be back where you started continuing on whatever you were doing with the floor now free. In other words change your floor, go to the far end stair case on that floor than crouch back to your original floor and walk back to your previous position without interacting with doors if possible.

Ghosts

  • Woman Locked in The Closet can be triggered by common chance in all classroom cabinets with the lights off with the lighter
  • The Face Filled With Hatred ghost can be triggered in all innermost cubicles in Main Building Section 1 except the Girls 1st floor bathroom. Hide in them than wait a while.
  • Headless Ghost has a random chance of appearing in the Main building. She can also spawn in the New Building so you shouldn’t worry about getting this, you’ll end up getting her something like a dozen times on hard mode.
  • Tree Ghost – Compulsory Ghost
  • The Woman Who Hung Herself – Compulsory Ghost

Checklist For Main Building, Section 1

This is best done before grabbing the Wood Token after defeating the Tree ghost but obviously you can spawn the janitor if you want for that extra thrill. This should serve as a useful section for all the collectibles of their respective categories to check what you’re missing or for those who want the fun of collecting everything without already knowing even the rooms they are in. Please note that these are the only accessible items available after the Tree Ghost, backtracking to Main Building section 1 at a later time will be necessary to truly collect everything here. Good ole’ Control F comes useful here.

Find 9 Doodles – refer to Playing Yoo Ji-min section. This task is optional and is not required to complete the Ghost Collection. However this short task can unlock some major new gameplay content if you ever do a second playthrough of the game and can be done alongside obtaining the required items.

Playing as Yoo Ji-min

I’m uncertain if it is really neccessary to find the 10 doodles on your first playthrough to unlock her on the 2nd but to be safe I recommend you find all 10 doodles on your first playthrough which shouldn’t be difficult or take long at all. One thing I am certain about is that you definately need to get an ending related to Han So-young to play as Yoo Ji-min. The following images also feature an example route alongside the locations but you can find them in whatever order you want. Note that Doodle 9 is not selectable in the first playthrough.

I have also included evasion points on the 2nd Floor map.

Once you start a new game you just do the same thing. If you don’t get the cutscene when you enter the north staircase on the 2nd floor, you missed a doodle. After you get to Main Building 2 and gain access to the Principals office, watch the CCTV footage 3 times than go straight to rescuing her. Touching the Faculty Office 2 Key cancels her route availability and leaves Yoo Ji-min to some uncertain fate.

Main Building, Section 2

This time there are four floors with each floor having the same layout. The Janitor does not spawn until you either enter the Lost and Found room on the 2nd floor or watch the first CCTV footage so take your time to explore the unlocked rooms before then.

Escaping him is usually done by making it to another floors bathroom while you can avoid him by hiding behind desks until he leaves the floor, those same rooms acting as reliable evasion spots. He can also be tricked on the staircase by opening a door when he’s nearby than quickly crouching away. He typically enters the stair case if you succeed in hiding from him in the bathroom, leaving the entire floor free so take advantage of that fact.

New Building

This level contrasts with previous levels with it’s wide space and brighter ambience and this in turn also makes for a much more difficult scenario with the Janitor, this time one without a limping leg. It is substantially even more difficult to escape the Janitor this time round than ever before. Indeed it lives up to it’s theme in the irrational fear of an unsafe situation with no easy way to get away, Agoraphobia, and is one of the most difficult sections in the game. Back in the original game I would cheaply resort to the use of an exploit to despawn him, thankfully the Remake has made him much more forgiving now.

The History room is a possible chase ender, otherwise it is a suitable evasion point to which you then head out the 2nd floor door and straight into the nearest classroom to hide. Bathrooms on the 2nd floor are risky if the Janitor is tailing too close but will work if you have good distance and if successful will leave the corridor rooms free to explore. The computer labs are a good chase ender for the western side. The third floor bridge is an obvious place to change direction but there is a chance the Grandmother ghost can immobilize you there. Classrooms are actually pretty reliable even at short distances but make sure you have enough time to crouch to your hiding spot and make sure you hide in at least the middle row of desks.

Obtaining the blue keycard and gaining access to the 1st floor door to the corridors, than using that door and exiting the 2nd floor door or vice versa (cease sprinting at either end) and either hiding in the nearest room or gaining enough distance to outrun him. A result of the combination of stairs and doors.

Once you get up to the part where you cross the Rooftop the Janitor dissapears and doesn’t spawn until you drain the water! This is a perfect opportunity to do everything without hassle. If only I knew this earlier since I had to do everything here the hard way. Note that when he does return as you progress he will start to actively go into classrooms with lights on to investigate and shut them off unlike before.

Passage Way From Main Building, Section 2 to New Building

Ghost
Fox Spirit – After going through the passageway, simply go back. You will be walking through the corridors endlessly and trigger the Fox Spirit’s singing. Simply walk or wait until it finishes its singing. This can be done anytime without a Spirit Bell, an item which is essential to have to return to the Main Building from New. The Passageway is actually technically Main Building, Section 2 but I find it easier to just place it here.

  • Use the Small Master Key to open the Typewriter Desk to obtain 1. The Housemistress Spirit

Music Supplies Room

You will need to use the Morse Code Chart on the Metronome here to get the code for the Music Appreciation Room’s locked box. A quick pendulum movement represents a dot while a slow movement represents a dash. Everytime the pendulum reaches either end it makes a click noise. When you start the Pendulum movement wait until the pendulum goes to the left first and clicks than start reading it from there.

For example the pendulum goes slowly to the left and makes a click noise on that end. Than it goes right fast and left fast than right slow and left slow and right slow again to make the number 2 which is 2 dots and 3 dashes. Although there were actually 6 clicks, the 1st click didn’t count. I recommend reading it a few times to make sure you don’t end up getting a different combination of numbers which would mean you messed up somewhere.

Checklist
  • Get code for safe in Nurses Office
  • 20. The Missing Children
  • 1. The Housemistress Spirit
  • Get code for locked box in Music Appreciation Room of the New Building

New Building Final Tasks
