The Mulligan
Choosing what you should keep, or mulligan away, is the first decision you make each game and can have huge impact on how well you perform. This section will help you to understand what hands are good, what hands are bad, and what hands are mediocre. Your first mulligan in a game is free, while each successive mulligan draws 1 less card than you had before.
Ideally, this deck is looking for 1-2 one drops, 1-2 two drops, a Triplicate Spirits, and 2-3 Plains in the opening hand.
This hand is amazing, and should without a doubt be kept. Very few draws could even be better. On the first two turns we can play the Elite Vanguard and Raise the Alarm. On turn 3 we can play the second Raise the Alarm and then the Triplicate Spirits (tapping our Vanguard and 4 Soldier tokens for the convoke). On turn 4 we swing for a potential 23 points of damage. Even if they have a blocker or two up, most decks just can’t recover from that much damage that early.
Here we have some of the best cards in our deck, but there is only a single Plains. Since we have the draw, we’re favoured to draw a second land by our second turn (~36% by the first draw and and about a 60% by the second draw). With just these two land, we’re able to play all the cards in our hand as well, so it wouldn’t kill us to be stuck there for a couple turns. I would keep this hand if it meant going down to 6 cards, but would consider mulliganing if we still had our free one.
This time we have the opposite problem. 4 Plains is more than we will need, and we don’t draw first to have a better chance to correct the issue. Still, there are a couple Loyal Pegasi and a Sigiled Paladin so our first couple turns would be good. I would consider mulliganing this hand on the free, or even if I had to go down to six.
