Ye Olde Bestiary – A Guide on the Dungeon of Doom’s Deadly Denizens

Overview

This guide consists of a detailed list of many of the creatures that you may encounter as you descend into the Dungeon’s depths. Many spoilers will be blocked out, but beware; your experience may be either helped or hindered if you look at this guide before you go in.

Notes

In case you didn’t read the description, this guide will contain spoilers, but many of them will be blocked out, like so. Still, it’s advised that you refrain from reading this guide unless you don’t mind having the game spoiled to you.

Not every enemy will have a picture with it, but I’ll do my best to upload pictures to go with each enemy section.

This guide is a work in progress.

Miscellanous Enemies

These creatures don’t fit into the other categories very well and are more suited for being compiled into a section like this.

Sprites – Night Lights

Sprites are benign creatures that couldn’t be considered enemies. They are white circular beings that gently fly in a circular pattern and provide light. They can be captured in a bottle and used as a light source. You can also combine them with a stone tear to produce a potion of levitation. To release a sprite from a bottle, you simply toss the bottle on the ground, breaking it in the process and freeing the sprite. Sprites can appear in many different colors depending on their environment, though they are usually yellow.

Giant Ants – Red and Deadly

The Dungeon of Doom is filled with giant insects, including ants. These enemies scuttle across the ground and attack the player on sight. They can be found roaming around or as eggs, and they can appear individually or in groups. Ants shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the well-prepared adventurer, as they don’t deal much damage individually. Beware when they appear in groups, however. Giant ants have an immunity to fire and a weakness to ice.

Warden – Eye in the Sky

These ghostly beings are a bit more uncommon in earlier levels, but they can still be seen. Wardens possess a single eyeball and a set of shadowy tentacles, and they can be seen gently gliding through the air in the Dungeon of Doom. Their main method of attack is to pursue the player and fire magic bolts at them. Wardens themselves possess an immunity to magic attacks, so you must resort to non-magic means of attacking them if you wish to damage them. Wardens come in different sizes, and the larger ones can block arrows, so you may have to use melee weapons. Wardens can be dangerous for the unprepared explorer if they’re not careful due to their high mobility and resistance to magic and potentially arrows.

Fish – Not Friends, Neither Food

“Fins, gills, scales and a tail. Swimming in the water. Definitely a fish then.”

The waters of the Dungeon of Doom are home to many creatures, including fish. Unfortunately, these fish aren’t friendly. These creatures are usually more of a nuisance than anything and can be easily dealt with… most of the time. However, since the fish’s home is underwater, you may find yourself having other difficulties with weapons, movement, and air if you are in deep water. Fish come in different varieties and sizes.

Rats

Rats are arguably the Dungeon of Doom’s most ubiquitous enemies; they can appear almost everywhere. They also come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors, hence why they get their own category.

Rats – They’re the Rats

“Dungeons and rats go together like peas and carrots.”

These are your standard run-of-the-mill rats. They attack by biting the player, but they are wary of weapons and torches. White rats can poison the player when they bite, so watch out. Rats pose very little threat to the well-prepared player and can be ignored for the most part if you have torches. Their small health pool and their tendency to sometimes appear in large groups allows for easy dispatching with AoE weapons.

Giant Rat – Makes All of the Rules

“Whoa, that is one BIG rat! This is going to be one tough cookie to defeat. Its teeth look sharp and dangerous. Let’s get rid of it quickly as we can.”
These rats are the bigger brethren of the ordinary rats found in the Dungeon. As a result, they are tougher to fight and not usually found in groups as large as the smaller ones.
