Overview
“Yume Nikki” means “Dream Diary” in Japanese (and thus the word can be written as ε€’ζ₯θ¨ although the title is normally in hiragana), and the game follows a young girl named Madotsuki as she dreams. The goal is to seek out and acquire all 24 ‘Effects’.

I’ve made this guide before but it wasn’t asscosiated with the Yume Nikki Game due to it not being released on Steam yet, so here is the guide again for people to better understand Yume Nikki.

Yume Nikki (γγγ«γ£γ) (pronounced /juΛme nikki/) is a 32-Bit freeware game created by Kikiyama, a Japanese solo game designer.
The game otherwise has no plot, and nearly the entire game is left up to speculation. There are many fan theories on what the game and its events mean. Some of them are more graphic or abstract than the others, you have been warned.
This guide will explain some of the worlds, characters, events, etc. to help your Yume Nikki experience and/or enlighten you on what this game means.

Madotsuki (ηͺδ»γ, lit. windowed) (pronounced /mΙΛdΙtsuΛ.kiΛ/) is the protagonist of Yume Nikki. She is one of the few characters in Yume Nikki with an established name, since characters require a name for the menu screen in RPG Maker games (the other two being Monoko and Monoe, specified in the filenames of their image files).

As with virtually everything else in the game, Madotsuki’s identity and life are a mystery. Only what can be seen in-game can be considered canon, although there are many varying interpretations of her.
‘Madotsuki’ is not a word used as a name in Japan – in fact, it may not even be her true name at all. It could be thought of as being a metaphor; more a description of the character as the ‘player’s window into the dream world’ rather than a literal name. It could also be a way to preserve the game’s theme of loneliness by giving the character a functional, dehumanizing name, rather than a personal name.
π₯
Although Madotsuki can go out onto the balcony, attempting to leave the room by the door results in her simply shaking her head. This may be either due to her being a hikikomori, or because Madotsuki is physically unable to open it.
The balcony background changes depending on the time of day. It is a place of limited functionality until a later point in the game, and its dream world representation simply serves as a spawnpoint for the dream world.
To access the Dream World, use the bed. To save your game, use the desk. To have some fun, use the pink console on the floor.

The Nexus (A.K.A. The Door Room) is the first room of the dream world, serving as the central hub from which all other locations can be eventually reached. The room is one of the most iconic locations in Yume Nikki, with its characteristic colorful doors and concentric Aztec-inspired floor design.
π₯
Yume Nikki is a game consisting of many interconnected locations that vary wildly in theme and size. One of the goals of the game is to visit them all and witness the many events that take place there.
The dream world is an intricate labyrinth of openly looping regions and obscure pathways, but most regions of the game can be considered as part of an individual ‘world’ with connections to other worlds.
