Overview
This is a guide to help new Ares players, (or help make some new ones) know how to play Ares, and what he does.
Abillities (and role)
So First off if your going to play Ares, you have to know this. Hes a guardian, and you have to stay front lines, hes not an adc or mage or whatever, you have to stay frontlines, however this doesnt mean you cant retreat, always retreat if your below half health, or your injured and enemies arent attacking.
His Passive. “Each completed aura item that Ares owns grants him 30 additional Magical Power.”
you can use this passive in many ways, there are multiple health items that have auras, or if your feeling damage-y, you can use magical power (except that isnt what a guardian is meant for)
This abillity is the abillity that makes Ares, Ares. this can help secure kills and do a suprisingly good amount of damage. Now it may be hard to hit it at first, and all I can say for that.. Is to get used to predicting and all that stuff, I still miss some shackles and its not uncommon to.
His second abillity. “Ares strengthens the defenses of himself and all nearby allies, granting Protections and reducing Crowd Control durations. For each shackled enemy, the Protection Buffs are increased.”
This isnt his most important abillity, but you should still use it. Get used to pressing 2 when rushing in to push. It really negates damage, for example, at level one if something does 150 damage without the buff, with the buff it would do 110 – 120.
His third abillity. “Flames pour forth from Ares’ shield, engulfing enemies in a cone in front of him causing damage every .5s for 4s. Ares is immune to Knockback for the duration.”
this is a very useful abillity for clearing out minions, and for comboing with your shackle, if its not on cooldown, then use your fire to do more damage to the god your shackling.
“Ares throws chains out to all enemy gods in an area around him. All enemies hit by the chains are pulled to Ares after 2.5s, taking damage and are Stunned.”
His ult.. this ult is game winning, it can combo with many other gods, and other ults. One problem That sometimes happens, is the team getting purification. Now sometimes you can get them to use purification with your shackle, but its kinda rare for that to happen. The solution? Just ult anyways, if they do get purification they still take the damage from your ult, and they may forget to press F for purification.
What every smite player forgets..
Ares, is OP.

People underestime Ares because they just think that hes just a damage sponge…
your wrong, he can drain your health in only a matter of seconds with his Shackle, and fire.
What to upgrade
If you ask me, upgrade your ult as soon as possible, you want to get your ult out there as soon as possible to combo with your fellow gods.
One thing though, Ares requires a lot of communication, so make sure to tell your teammates when your gonna ult, and what your gonna do.
Now I would get my shackle to max level first, so you can do damage and be tanky, next your fire, then your ult, or before your fire, you could level up your ult, your choice really.
Items
Get health items, specifically the ones that compliment with your passive, such as Gauntlet Of Thebes (dont always get aura items though.) Honestly there isnt a build I use for every game I play with Ares, I usually buy items according to the enemy gods, if their doing a lot of damage to me, get a protection item, if im recalling a little too much, get a health item.
