General

Introduction

The concepts described in this guide are viable for Kira’s Orbital Laser as well.

Here is a review of the more basic Artillery Strike mechanics:

When an artillery strike designator targets a vertical surface, the artillery marker offsets its position perpendicular to that surface. That means that there’s always an offset distance between the targeting point and the artillery marker. The marker represents a red laser on the ground which indicates the center of the strike. It is visible in every single video in the guide.

An artillery strike consists of three explosive projectiles which have random impact locations inside its radius.

Before they land, the projectiles themselves don’t have a hitbox – they’re purely animations. That means they can pass through the narrowest crevices.

Artillery designator

The designator’s range is unlimited.

When calling down a strike, it’s often necessary to target objects that are placed high or that stick out. It’s not always a good idea to target the ground because there are often obstacles between the sky and the ground and you may have to target these particular obstacles rather than the ground itself.

Nearby explosions and taking hits will cause aim-flinching which could result in misplaced artillery strikes. Arty is able to channel his strike mid-air.

It’s not recommended to use the quick-ability hotkey because it’s clumsy and doesn’t utilise the designator’s optics. It’s much more convenient to aim after manually switching to the designator, rather than before switching.

Cylindrical objects are versatile when it comes to targeting with an artillery designator. For example, in Trainyard spots number 6. and 7., we’re targeting the same object to call down an artillery strike on two distinct locations. Pixel-perfect aiming is significant when targeting such objects and may take a lot of practice before you get used to it.

The artillery marker is visible for opponents. In some situations it’s best to designate it out of their line of sight to make it harder to spot and thus more difficult to dodge.

General tips

Utilising the spots featured in this guide requires timing and awareness. It’s often best to gather all sorts of information, in order to make artillery strikes most effective, for example:

– Following opponents’ respawns and positions.
– Following opponents through deathcam or by spectating teammates.
– Listening to sounds like footsteps or gunfire.
– Following EV’s movement through walls.
– Following Datacore/EMP Charge/Drug Sample movement through walls. The countdown bar next to them disappears when a player is returning it.

Arty is often able to engage in combat from safe positions while remaining out of sight, avoiding getting spotted or taking damage.

It’s not always necessary to deal damage or score frags with an artillery strike. It can be used to force opponents out of position while gaining positional advantage or buying time for yourself and your teammates. It may be a good idea to shoot at opponents right after calling down an artillery strike on their position. Gunshot hits slow them down and make it more difficult for them to dodge explosions, while giving Arty a higher chance to finish downed opponents.

When mercs mount an MG, it shields them by reducing or completely blocking damage from artillery strike explosions (this does not apply to the EV’s MG). Nevertheless the spots that target MGs could be viable, for instance, if you suspect that a player will dismount an MG right before a strike lands or if you attempt to neutralize any deployables around them.
