Metro 2033 is set twenty years after a nuclear war devastated the Earth. Humanity survives in the Moscow Metro, a vast underground labyrinth that serves as both refuge and tomb. The surface is frozen, irradiated, and overrun by mutants, making survival above ground nearly impossible.

The protagonist is Artyom, a young man born before the nuclear war but raised entirely in the metro. He lives in the Exhibition station, which is relatively peaceful compared to other stations. His ordinary life changes drastically when mysterious creatures called the Dark Ones begin threatening nearby stations.

A Spartan Ranger named Hunter visits Exhibition, warning Artyom’s stepfather Sukhoi about the increasing threat of the Dark Ones. Hunter explains that if he does not return from his mission, someone must deliver a message to Polis, the central hub of civilization in the Metro.

After Hunter disappears during his mission, Artyom decides to take on the dangerous journey himself, venturing through numerous hostile stations and deadly tunnels to reach Polis and warn them of the Dark Ones.

The Moscow Metro is fragmented, each faction reflecting a different ideology and survival strategy. The Red Line (Communists) controls the southern tunnels and emphasizes collectivism and security.
