Overview

How to use the Revive Project but still keep track of your time spent on the game with Steam

A brief intro

This guide is very simple and just explains how to install the battlelog launcher but still use Steam to play Battlefield 2. The main objective is to launch this game from Steam and use the multiplayer feature (and increase your “number of hours played”).

First steps

First of all, as you all know battlefield 2 multiplayer stopped working because GameSpy closed their servers. However, you can still play in multiplayer if you use this “revive project” (i’ve already started to unlock some new cool weapons thanks to that).

  • Go to the {LINK REMOVED}Download section of Battlelog.co
  • Download the appropriate game client for your system
  • Install it (keep pressing next, it will detect that you have a “steam installation”)

At the end, open this new installed launcher. It will show that it needs to update some files and you may need to deactivate your antivirus. Do it and look for the settings tab and click “apply cd-key”.

What did i do and how should i proceed?

Congratulations, BF2 multiplayer should work! The launcher got some new files for your BF2 directory and updated your BF2 key to a new one (the steam key doesn’t work), so if you press play it should do the trick.

What you should not do:

  • If you open the game from Steam and go to multiplayer it will show “invalid cd-key”. You can’t play again until you go to the launcher and click “apply cd-key”.
  • Never click on “Verify Integrity of Game Cache” (in the properties of the game). It will make the folder just like before the installation of the launcher

Everytime you launch the game on steam it will check the game cd-key and fix it if it is different. The solution is simple, just remove the ability of steam changing the cd-key in your system by disabling it’s permissions.

  • Go to regedit (Win + r, and write the command)
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWOW6432Nodeelectronic artsea gamesbattlefield 2
  • Right click on the “ergc” folder and select “permissions…”
  • Select “advanced”
  • Make the right user only able to read the key: you may need to disable the inherited permissions first. In my case i disabled the write permissions for all the users but you can do as you like. Make sure the key from the launcher is provided before this modification.

Conclusion

If you open the game with Steam it will try to change the cd-key back but it will not have permissions to do that. If you go to the multiplayer page it will be available and the cd-key error will not be displayed.
Just keep in mind to once in a while open the launcher to update it when it needs: You always need the latest version for being able to play!

Remember to have fun!
