FIX: Game Freeze On Black Screen During Start-Up
Problem:
This is a guide on solving an issue where on launch the game would freeze on a black screen (maybe you hear some audio for a second) for WINDOWS devices. (Shouldn't be too different for other OSs)
Solution:
- In your library select Metro 2033 Redux > click on the gear icon or right click
- Manage > Browse Local Files (opens game location in file explorer)
- In the 2033 Folder > Delete legal.ogv (or move it out of there)
- Create a black file (recommended: New > Text Document, will create an empty *.txt file)
- Rename EMPTY file to: ' legal.ogv ' and confirm file type change
- If you can't change the file type:
File Explorer Window > View > [Show] > File name extensions > *enable*
- Now you should have one empty legal.ogv file in game's 2033 folder
- Press PLAY on steam (you don't need safe mode if it prompts you)
More Fixes:
In case this hasn't solved your problem here are some potentially helpful links / tips:
- Restart PC / Update OS
- Verify Game Files : Game in Library > Right Click / Gear > Properties > Installed Files (or Local Files) > Verify Integrity of game files > Click Button
- Update Drivers (you're old enough to google this, if you don't know how)
- Disconnecting Extra monitors (some users have problems with multiple monitors)

- Check System Requirements on Store Page https://store.steampowered.com/app/286690/Metro_2033_Redux/
- Else I recommend: Checking Steam discussion (Start your own!), Steam Guides, Steam Support, online forums or just google.
- I advice AGAINST following youtube tutorials around this subject, since they seem to promote making your system more vulnerable while not solving the problem in the title!
Personal Note:
I made this Guide to hopefully help new players easily fix this issue.
As it took me an annoying amount of time to find a solution myself.
If someone already made this guide, I am sorry for making another. (I couldn't seem to find yours)
