History of Montezuma

Instead of my traditional start, I decided to incorporate some histroy about the leader of the Azec’s, Montezuma.

Not really is known about Montezuma and why he did the things he did. His name has many spellings and pronunciations. Scholars found out that his actual name was Heuy Tlatoani Moctezuma, which means The Great Speaker. Born aroud 1466, Moctezuma would become the 9th Emperor of the Aztec Empire and would become general before that. He riegned as Emperor from 1502-1520. In 1517 Moctezuma recieved news that ‘Strangers’ landed on the coast. These ‘Strangers’ were the Spanish. Moctezuma, however, was used and imprisioned. The Spanish took over the Empire. He died in 1520 in a battle against the Spanish. Moctezuma’s rule was succeeded by his brother Cuitlahuac and then by his nephew Cuauhtemoc, the last of the Aztec Emperors.

The Aztec’s- A culutral Civ

When I do guides for Civ’s, I try to find out what I think they can be considered as. Normally I don’t feel like the Aztec’s would be considered a Culural Civ, but I have found out how to consider the Aztec’s as a Cultural Civ.

1. Since the Aztec’s have Sacrifical Captives, killing enemy units like Barbarians should be your first priority besides finding a good place to put your first city. Do not destroy Barbarian Camps right away because you can culture farm and keep killing Barbarian Units when they spawn. Just make sure that they don’t destroy your tiles in your cities. Also, I highly recommend a Domination Victory or Culture Victory for this Civ, if you plan on getting lots of culture. Declaring wars on your enemies is a big deal, espically if you are going up a Civ that is based off of military strength. Wars, in the long run, can be costly and drawn out, espically if it is taking you a long time to take one city. Sacrifical Captives can be used to its full potential by killing enemy units.

Keep this idea in mind as you play as the Aztec’s. Consider my recommendations for Victories. The other Victories, Science and Diplomatic, are also good choices. I am not limiting your Victory choice, but simply giving you ideas on how to approach this Civ for the first time.

Aztec’s Unique Unit, Building and Ability

The Aztec’s Unique’s are easy to describe because they only have one Unique Building and Unit. I decided to throw in all the Uniques into on section to make it easier.

The Aztec’s Unique Unit, the Jaguar, replaces the warrior. This Unit is only an improved version of the Warrior, only stronger and can travel through rough terrian quickly (I.E. Forests, Jungles). This early unit can be used to create your military and conquer early on. Also the Jaguar recives a combat bonas while fighting in Forest and Jungle Tiles. Jaguars heal 25 for each kill and gets 33% attack bonas in jungles.

The Aztec’s Unique Building, the Floating Gardens, replaces the Water mill. This building provides +1 Production, +15% food in the city that it is built in and +2 Food for every Lake Tile. I recommend building your cities near Lake Tiles to increase the Population of your cities.

The Aztec’s Unique Ability, Sacrifical Captives, allows you to gain culture for each enemy unit killed. I highly recmmend that you go for a cultural victory via agressive military path. Play maps that contain a lot of Barbarians. Also go down the Honor Socail Policy to gain more culture for every unit killed.
