So You Want to Play Fallout 1 in 2026
Welcome, Vault Dweller.
So, you want to play Fallout 1: the real beginning, back when the series was still a roleplaying game with teeth. Good news: it holds up. Bad news: the 1997 release doesn’t.
This guide isn’t a walkthrough, it’s an orientation. I’ll help you get set up and prepared to walk the wastes as the devs intended. Perhaps even better.
If you own Fallout 1 on Steam, great, that’s your base. But don’t launch it just yet. The game in its vanilla state is buggy, unbalanced, and missing a ton of content that was originally planned but cut.
That's where Fallout Fixt comes in.

What is Fallout Fixt?
Fallout Fixt is a comprehensive restoration and enhancement mod created by Sduibek. It does three big things:
– Restores cut content (quests, dialogue, encounters, items)
– Fixes hundreds of bugs the original release never patched
– Modernizes the game with quality-of-life improvements like resolution support and improved UI behavior
There are multiple install options, ranging from Purist (bug fixes only) to Full (restoration + balance tweaks). If it’s your first time, you might want to go with Purist so you can enjoy the restored content on later playthroughs.

Quickstart Tips (Without Spoilers)
– Tag Small Guns unless you're doing a gimmick build, they dominate the early game
– Don’t dump Intelligence, it locks you out of quests and dialogue
– Save often, and in multiple slots, especially before risky choices or new areas
– You don’t need Charisma, this isn’t New Vegas
– Don’t be intimidated by the isometric view, you’ll adjust quickly
This is all you need for your first playthrough, literally. Later on, you can dig into a detailed walkthrough to complete all the side quests you might have missed. For that, I recommend The Nearly Ultimate Fallout Guide by Per Jorner.
