Before i start:

There are minor spoilers in here, so do be careful, and DO NOT read this guide if you want to experience the game in the way it was ment to. Otherwise, read on!

Saving and Ink Ribbons

In Resident Evil, all of your supplies are limited, down to the number of times you can save. Depending on the difficulty you chose, you will find a various number of items called Ink Ribbons, and these are a one-time use item used to save your game at a Typewriter.

But how often SHOULD you save? Well, i made up a little guide to help me on when i should save. I only save if Two of these 5 things have occured:

- I get tired/bored of playing
- If i die, it will take me 30 minutes or more to get to where i am now (Excluding the time of you walking around not knowing what to do/Time trying to figure out puzzles)
- If i had escaped a life or death situation (Jill sandwitch scenerio, is one)
- If i've killed and destroyed 4 or more zombies (Crimson heads included, discussed later on as well)
- If i believe the next room holds a boss

Otherwise, save that ink ribbon and go just a LITTLE farther. Unless your playing in easy, you won't get more 30 Ink ribbons, so use them wisely.

Jill or Chris?

You have the option to play as either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, and each character have their advantages and disadvantages.

Jill
- She has 8 inventory slots
- Her special item is a lockpick, which can be used to open doors
- She can get the Grenade Launcher early on in the game
- Barry Burton can save her from certain scenerios, and if he dies, you can take his very powerful Revolver Magnum
- Jill has less health, and must find and carry around the lighter with her
- One of the bosses can be avoided if you go through some steps

Chris
- He has 6 inventory slots
- His special item a lighter, but must go around and find keys to unlock the doors Jill can use the lockpick on
- He can obtain the Flamethrower somewhere in the game
- His "partner" is Rebecca Chambers, whom he seems to help out alot in the game.
- He can take more damage than Jill.
- The boss Jill can avoid must be fought as Chris

Overall, if you want an easier time, play with Jill. She gets alot more Firepower than Chris does, but the largest problem to me seems to be inventory management with her. I have not played as Chris yet, which is on my To-do list since the stories are a bit different, so i'm not sure of the obvious differences.

Item Management

Another difficult thing in Resident Evil is the lack of slots in your Inventory, which forces you to be wise in what to pick up and what not.

However, there is hope: Throughout the game, you will find "Safe" rooms, with a Typewriter and Item box. These boxes are Universal, meaning you can put one item into one box, and be able to take it out in another. It also has a large amount of open slots, so you can store quite a few items in there

You will find yourself using this box often to store things and making runs to and from the box often, so make sure to clear out the hallway in front of the room for easy access.

A few tips for keeping your inventory clear:

- DO NOT carry around Ink ribbons! This was a mistake I made and hurt me greatly, since i had one less slot to carry items. Its wiser to store them in the Item Box, because carrying them around is useless to you.

- Since it is impossible to drop items, items on the ground or on other objects will never vanish or disappear, therefore it is ok to leave some items in their place if you do not need them at the moment, or if you're in a room with multiple items, you can grab the puzzle objects first, then go back for the other items later.

- Keys are a hasstle to carry around, since they take up a slot and are used for multiple doors. However, once you open all doors, the game will tell you the key is useless and give you an option to discard. Do so, otherwise you'll have a useless key in your inventory or itembox.

Combat: Fight or Flight?

While walking through Spencer Manor, you will run into all kinds of enemies, from Zombies to Sharks (Yes, you heard me. Sharks.). Since ammo is so limited, it is impossible to kill everything you see, so sometimes it is wiser to Flee than fight, but when?

I learned that the only time you should really kill an enemy is if its in an area that you find yourself walking through alot, or in front of save rooms. Otherwise, it is safer and wiser to flee from enemies. A good tip for getting past enemies is to run past their shoulder, and 95% of the time their grab will miss you.

But if you kill one, first make sure its dead. If you see a pool of blood beneath the corpse, then the enemy is dead....

For now.

You see, if you leave a zombie corpse as is, then it will soon turn into a Crimson head, a faster, deadlier, and more terrying form of the zombie.

Killing these are not easy, but once you kill those they are dead for good. An effective way to kill them is by using the shotgun, since it will stun and knock back the creature, giving you time to switch to the pistol to finish it off, or run away.

There are 3 way to prevent them:

  1. Get a headshot (You'll know by its head exploding)
  2. Burn the corpse with a Lighter and Kerosine
  3. Not kill the zombie in the first place

Headshots happen randomly with each weapon though, so do not rely on it. A way to get easy headshots, though, is to take the shotgun and aim upwards while a zombie walks towards you, and right before he grabs you, BLAM! 9 times out of 10 his head will pop like a pimple and he'll fall harmlessly to the ground.

Miscellaneous Tips

- Not every boss has to be killed, it is possible to escape without killing it, saving time and ammo

- When you are poisoined by Spiders or Wasps, it will NEVER kill you, but you will be brought to the lowest health possible over time, meaning one hit from anything can kill you.

- If using a Controller, when you are stunned or grabbed, Rotate the left stick Counter Clock-wise, while moving the right stick Clock-wise to escape quickly. Do not mash the buttons or D-pad, as it will do nothing for you.

- Some weapons, such as the Self-defense gun, is best saved for boss battles.

- The game is not timed (Unless doing the acheivement), so take it nice and slow. When you enter a room, listen for footsteps, and take it slow around corners and camera angles.

- Explore and examine EVERYTHING. Sometimes items are hidden behind other objects because of the camera angle, or doors/moveable objects blend into the enviroment because of the lighting, so make sure to comb a room multiple times before leaving.

Thanks for reading!

Thats about all i'm going to put down! I purposely left some things out for you to discover on your own so that fun isn't ALL ruined for you. Thanks for reading my guide, and feel free to leave questions in the comments, though i can't promise i'll answer it :c

Let me know if you want me to make a guide for all the puzzles as well! However, i won't be giving you the answer, just small hints to help and guide you to the answer of it.
