why I use these settings
Assetto Corsa's standard game pad settings:
High steering speed is good ...
Disadvantages of high steering speed setting on a game pad:
My settings make the steering input more subdued, which makes the car's behaviour less "nervous". It is more stable. Especially at higher speeds and high speed corners / chicanes it makes a difference. In my case it led to less escalateing / yawing and less spins.
Disadvantages:
So, for some tracks increase the steering speed or the speed sensitivity setting.
- even minimal steering input makes the car steer significantly
- high steering speed
High steering speed is good ...
- when you have to corner sharply
- when you need to turn the steering wheel fast from one extreme position to the opposite one, like in narrow slow chicanes
- for stopping the car from oversteering / preventing a spin
Disadvantages of high steering speed setting on a game pad:
- steering is very nervous, not smooth
- the car gets very instable fast
- when driving with higher speeds even a small steering input can lead to loosing control and spinning
- especially when you have to avoid another car (evasive swerve) at high speed loosing control over your own car is likely
The setting "speed sensitivity" tries to solve this problem. It increases steering speed at low speed and decreases steering speed at high speed.
My settings make the steering input more subdued, which makes the car's behaviour less "nervous". It is more stable. Especially at higher speeds and high speed corners / chicanes it makes a difference. In my case it led to less escalateing / yawing and less spins.
Disadvantages:
- preventing an already oversteering car from spinning is hard. In this case high steering speed can be an advantage.
- if you have to turn the steering wheel fast from one extreme position to the opposite one (e.g. when driving through a narrow slow chicane while not being on the ideal line because there's another car besides you) a setting with higher steering speed is an advantage.
So, for some tracks increase the steering speed or the speed sensitivity setting.
comparison to other one's settings
KuBr0 shows in his guide a different approach. Both, him and Shaddixx, use maximum steering speed (100 %) in combination with high speed sensitivity (75 %) to make steering faster at low speed and slower at high speed.
