Automated Refueling of Steam Rocket Engines
The Setup
The goal of this setup is as follows:
- Resupply the Steam Rocket Engine whenever the Rocket returns to the launch pad
- Keep the gas pipes supplying the steam empty when not in use, to prevent the steam cooling and damaging the pipes
- Shut off the steam flow as soon as the rocket is refueled to waste as little steam as possible
- No manual intervention necessary
- little ressource usage
The setup I found is as follows:
It uses two memory toggles, along with a pipe element sensor and a NOT gate, to achieve all goals. (The OR gate on the right can be ignored for general setups, its only there because I have a second Rocket with the same setup)
All wires & logic gates within the rocket silo are ideally made from steel to prevent them from overheating during launches. Though copper can sometimes also work. If you build this setup while a fully fueled rocket is sitting on the launch pad, you need to put a temporary manual switch connected to the pipe element sensor, set it to on and remove it again, to prime the memory toggles.
Initially, after building the setup both memory toggles are red. If this is done with a landed, but empty, rocket, no further prep is necessary.
Once a rocket lands, the 2nd memory toggle is set to green, starting the refueling process.
When the rocket is refilled, steam starts passing throgh the pipe element sensor and to the vent. This sets the first memory toggle to green, which turns the 2nd memory toggle red.
Once the remaining steam in the pipe is bled off, the pipe element sensor turns red again. This has no effect on the memory toggles (The screenshot is taken in this state)
When the rocket takes off, the first memory toggle is set to red, preparing the system for the next landing.
