Gear points, EXP, and MB coins

For unlocking gear and cosmetics in MGO there are three currencies used each with their own purpose and ways of obtaining them.

Gear Points
Gear points are used to unlock cosmetics to decorate your characters as well as to unlock most weapon colours. They can be obtained in the following ways:
  • Playing in matches found via 'automatch'
  • Playing matches in 'Survival' mode
  • Reaching various gameplay milestones (e.g. play time, certain number of kills, etc.)
  • Obtaining titles (e.g. the Eagle title for getting many headshots)
  • Ascending your characters once they reach the maximum level
Unfortunately, the first two methods are very difficult to use due to the small player-base and most players joining matches manually. As for the other three methods they are certainly still able to be used nowadays as long as you play enough. However, they still demand a lot of time for those who want to unlock everything.
EXP
EXP is used to level up your characters which in turn unlocks more gear that can be used in your loadouts. EXP can be gained via playing in any match and the amount you receive by the end depends on your performance. However, the amount of EXP needed to level up especially by the final few levels is quite high and usually will require numerous matches to level up.
MB coins
MB coins is MGSV's premium currency and is shared across TPP and MGO. In MGO MB coins are used to unlock new character slots (the first three are free), obtain certain cosmetics and dyes, and temporarily increase the amount of gear points you obtain. Out of the three uses listed here I highly do not recommend using MB coins to boost gear points gained, it is not worth it. Sadly as a premium currency obtaining MB coins is either a slow and tedious process or requires spending real money. You can obtain up to 80 MB coins for free per week by logging in on every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Note that this must be done in TPP, not MGO. If you do plan on spending money for MB coins, I recommend getting the 2000 MB coin DLC as it is overall cheaper than buying it in game. However some of the methods that this guide will go over will remove the need for MB coins.

The 'legitimate' method

Used to gain EXP

Whilst this method requires the most time out of the others, it does not require any mods.

The method outlined in this video will require someone to do it with. You will need to set up a Cloak and Dagger match and the two of you will take turns interrogating each other and picking up the disc. This will net you a lot of points, far more than what you would expect to get in normal gameplay (especially compared to most Bounty Hunter matches).

Playing on the 'Outer Heaven' server

Used to gain EXP

This method does not require any mods to be used by the end user.

Outer Heaven is a dedicated lobby run by Snow Hunter that has several modifications compared to a vanilla lobby, notably the score and EXP gained has been exponentially increased so one will level up much faster than usual simply by playing in the lobby.

Hex editing the exe to unlock all cosmetics

Used to unlock cosmetics and bypass the MB coin requirement for some cosmetics

This method requires using a hex editor (like HxD[mh-nexus.de]) to modify the game's exe.

As outlined in arhivach's MGO cosmetic mod page[www.nexusmods.com] it is possible to made some edits to the MGO exe to unlock all cosmetics automatically. Look at the mod's posts tab for the updated addresses as they changed with the latest update.

Please note that this will only work with the English exe. The Japanese exe has different addresses and as such the same edits cannot be made.

Whilst you can just make the edits to the exe to unlock everything, you can use the entire mod as well to unlock more customisation options that are not normally possible, allowing for more outfit combinations.

Playing on a modded server

Used to bypass all unlock requirements, including EXP, gear points, and MB coins

This method will require using alice's mod, its source code and download can be found here[github.com].

alice's mod has several features but the one relevant to this guide is that it allows you to play on her modded server which has everything unlocked, fully leveled characters, and (basically) infinite MB coins.

In order to play on the custom server, you will need to enter a command in the command window that opens when MGSV opens with alice's mod installed. Type the following command into the window:
After that restart the game. Since matchmaking is done via Steam even after connecting to the custom server you will be able to play with everyone else, including those on Konami's server. However, please note that your characters from Konami's server will NOT be carried over to the custom server.

For players from Russia or Belarus you will need to follow a slightly different method. Please refer to the following guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3757309198
