How to cite your sources

Step-by-Step Guide to Citing Sources

  1. Identify the Citation Style
Determine the required citation style (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago). This should be kept the same for your entire work.
  2. Gather Necessary Information
In order to properly cite a source you will have to know such things as, title, puplisher, year, etc. depending on your source and citation style.
  3. Format the Citation
Follow the specific rules of the chosen citation style that you chose. Note that the formatting usually changes based on what source is being used. (The formatting for a book as a source will be different from a website for example even within the same citation style)
  4. Include In-Text Citations
Place in-text citations that are in places where it is relavant to direct the reader to a source. This also varies by citation style but is usually only a tiny bit of information such as author and year.
  5. Compile Your References List
This is where your properly formatted sources are listed and reffered to in the in-text citations. Make sure that you sort your sources alphabetically in order to make it easier to be double checked.

Thats it! I hope this guide has helped you with citing your sources and making your texts more credible.
