How to effectively take out spear units with cavalry

For this to work as it is planned, you are going to need at least two units of cavalry, and an enemy spear unit to fight against. I would recommend only going against one spear unit at a time (I haven't tried it with multiple but I doubt it would work). For my example I am using two units of Citizen Cavalry and a unit of Hoplites (you can see their stats and stuff in the adjacent pics).

To start, get your two units of cavalry on either side of the enemy spear unit (this shouldn't be too hard since the cav is a lot faster than the spearmen). I would recommend getting on both sides, but front and rear will work too, if you're ok with greater losses. After they are in position, go ahead and charge one of your units. This should knock down most of their men, and while they are getting up order your cavalry unit to fall back to the starting point. Most likely, the enemy will give chase to this unit, and while their backs are turned, charge into their rear with your second unit, and then order it to fall back (If they don't give chase to your cav, that is ok, just charge them anyway). Once they have fallen back order your first unit to wheel around and charge the enemy again, and then order them to fall back. Keep repeating this over and over until the enemy begin to waver. By this time, you will have taken several casualties to both units, but that is ok because the enemy is starting to break. When they look like they are about to start routing, charge both units at once and clean them up. Congrats! You just destroyed an enemy spear unit with cav! Keep repeating this on other spear units if needed, but make sure to give your men a break in between so that they can recover from fatigue.

Although this may not work against more elite units, it should work for most of them.
