How to enable Anisotropic Filtering and keep Parallax Occlusion Mapping without startup crashes in 2018 (POM+AF mod)

Introduction

IMPORTANT NOTE: This guide is about using the POM+AF mod on the Steam version of Crysis Warhead in 05/12/2018. If you don't have a problem with using the mod on your game - ignore this guide.

By default, in-game textures are blurry at a distance. Enabling Anisotropic Filtering (AF) through the in-game console fixes this, but disables Parallax Occlusion Mapping (POM) - a setting that makes the textures look 3D and more realistic.

In order to keep both the AF and POM for best visual quality, you need the POM+AF mod found online. However, in the present day the mod may prevent your game from launching. This guide shows how to install this mod correctly in 2018.

The Workaround

Instructions:

  • Download the POM+AF mod from here.[mega.nz] (Source[pcgamingwiki.com]) (It is the Crysis version, but it works on Crysis Warhead as well. The Crysis Warhead version cannot be opened using WinRAR).
  • Open zz_GlobalAmbientLighting_POMAf.pak file using WinRAR or an equivalent program.
  • Navigate to Shaders\HWScripts\CryFX and extract the fragLib.cfi file somewhere.
  • Go to the Crysis Warhead's game folder. Open the "Game" folder (Crysis Warhead\Game).
  • Open the Shaders.pak file using WinRAR.
  • Navigate to Shaders\HWScripts\CryFX and drop the previously extracted fragLib.cfi file into the CryFX folder.
  • Force enable anisotropic filtering on Crysis Warhead (Crysis64.exe in Crysis Warhead\Bin64) in your graphics card's control panel (depends on your graphics card's manufacturer like Nvidia or AMD. Look up online on how to do it for your own graphics card).

Now you should have both the AF and POM enabled in the game. The difference is most visible on dirt lands when in the prone position.
