For some reason, it only counts if you stay offline on Steam, no, not just offline for your friends, you need to go to the Menu bar up-left and click in Go Offline... option.

Mashing attack sometimes works but one way to guarantee their hats is pressing UP UP, your character will do a double jump and a kick, knocking back your enemy to the edge of the screen and dropping their hat in the air

Simply turn around and hit whoever you chose to leave at low health


you don't need to die, just restart after every kill, keep repeating this until you get the achievement.
