Sayori's Style
Externally, Sayori is a lighthearted and caring girl, who often prioritises the well-being of others before her own. Her mind often wanders, but when she is not daydreaming she can be found trying to emphasise her friend’s best qualities, or solving disputes in the literature club through thoughtful mediation.
Internally, Sayori hides the fact that she suffers from depressive episodes, and as a result frequently struggles to get up in the morning, and oftentimes forgets to eat. Sayori’s poetry embodies these heavier internal conflicts that exist in juxtaposition to her bubbly exterior, quite delicately. Her writing style is uniquely unsystematic when compared to the other girls. Her poetry is more like having a conversation, as she opts to write in a more free verse style, with each poem feeling diverse in their rhythm and structure (A casual midpoint between Yuri’s classical flair and Natsuki’s nonconformity). Her poetry reflects her character: approachable and fun, but still a front for a deeper struggle.
Initially, she highlights the simple pleasures in life as somewhat of an affirming technique. Later on, her metaphor usage reveal deep-set insecurities, and a tonal shift implies that these struggles are only getting worse. 'Dear Sunshine' uses imagery that invokes nostalgia, but with underlying themes of dependance and low motivation. 'Bottles' uses grotesque imagery and combines it with hyper-specific ‘cute’ language cues to crudely mask the overall intention. Her poetry is emotive because of it’s juxtaposition between the happy imagery and sad meaning. Easy on the outside, rough in the centre, much like Sayori.
To emulate Sayori's poetry-style, use nostalgic imagery to invoke a general sense of security — keeping the language light and innocent, even if you choose to address heavier feelings. To weave in emotional content, you must ask yourself, what is the flaw in this idealism of nostalgia? What if it what is supposed to make you happy, fails to do so? Does it lose its purpose? Her overall poetic structure is free form, and that makes it a good style to mimic as a beginner, as there are essentially no boundaries for your creativity.

Natsuki's Style
Natsuki's favourite form of literature is manga, and her poetry style directly corresponds to her preferences. Her style is simple, with an emphasis on mood and emotion; it is recognisable for its blunt approach, use of simple vocabulary, and strong metaphors that go deeper than initially perceived. In the game Natsuki uses poetry as an escape from reality—and sometimes as a way to express deep set emotions. This is apparent in her poems, such as 'Things I Like About Papa'. As a result her poetry is direct, unabashful and raw. In the game the other characters comment on her appearance and writing style as being "immature" due to it's perceived inelegance, and a lack of classic poetical structure; in reality, Natsuki is trying to express herself in the way she feels most comfortable, which is away from her abusive father and with her friends at the literature club, without feeling the need to conform to any rigid structure.
This style of poetry often requires the writer to be vulnerable and to engage the reader with emotional content using subversive techniques.
To mimic this writing style, try to write as much about your ideas as possible using as little words as you can. It might help to build the poem around an allegory, an anecdote or emotional setting. See what objects, animals, and other things you can relate to this idea and go from there. Beginning with this process will help make your poem more coherent, and strengthen your ideas thematically without the need for traditional poetic structure.

Yuri's Style
Yuri is quiet, shy, yet intelligent and assertive at times when discussing her favourite topics. She enjoys spending time reading classic novels and horror literature, accompanied by a steaming freshly brewed cup of tea.
As a result of these interests, her poetry is heavily introspective usually opting to tell a ‘story’, with the imagery strongly concerned in creating vivid settings - using careful detail on location and time of day. Yuri uses complex vocabulary, imagery and symbolism to carry her message, her poem titled 'The Raccoon' is an example of her extensive use of symbolism.
Yuri's poems are reflective of her own internal struggles and character, and her metaphors are often complex and hard to grasp. A whisper of a truth, hidden behind a mystery. These allegories are often a front for her nuanced experiences and emotions, which would turn away most, but allow any reader dedicated enough to decipher them, a glimpse through her eyes.
Recreating her style of poetry relies on having a well thought-out ‘narrative’ that is able to communicate the overall message/allegory of your poem. Try using more complex and sophisticated language in favour of more simple words, and where you can, tie those words to the visual elements of your story.
Take inspiration from your favourite novels! Just like Yuri, her keen love for literature fuels her passion for writing. Find any genres you enjoy: fantasy, dystopia or horror, anything may be a fun challenge for you to emulate in your writing.

Monika's Style
Monika is an anomaly. She is the popular girl, and yet cannot get the attention of the of the MC. Her awakening within the system of the game causes her to see the player behind the screen, and she grows obsessed with them instead.
Although a talented individual, Monika is hard working, and enthusiastic, often reciting helpful facts, or ‘tips of the day’ which become gradually unhinged as the game progresses. Her first tip offers the idea that it is better just to start writing something, and then tidy it up later—people can often become fixated on working out the small details rather than getting the overall idea together first.
She heeds her own advice, as often, she makes large decisions and changes without thinking of the repercussions, both in game and in her poetry. Her writing style reflects this philosophy through its ethereal qualities, with poems that feel more like her present thoughts than developed, nuanced ideas.
This is common in the style of ‘free-form’ poetry, where no single practice needs to be stuck with when creating your writing. Poems can be improvisational based upon a given stimuli, and written in untraditional forms upon a page Monika explains that she likes to play around with space on the page, and experiment with line length to enhance the aesthetic of a poem.
The way your reader visualises the words on a page is just as important as the contents of a poem itself, so to mimic Monika’s aesthetic style, try this: If you want your reader to put emphasis on a word, leave that word on its own line. If you want a poem to feel like a collection of thoughts, place the lines one after the other making them easy to digest. There is no wrong or right way to do this, so you don't need to feel limited to these examples, just go with whatever works, and always ask for feedback! If you want a challenge, try and map a silhouette of an image with words used in your poem.
