Multi-Tools: Types, Statistics, Weapons, Layouts
Intro
Stats Explanation
Increases damage done.
Increases speed that resources are mined.
Increases range of the quick-scan.
You might notice your Multi-Tools have some in-game visible stats like Damage Potential. Damage Potential is basically meaningless. It does not reflect DPS and is not a reliable way to compare different weapon types.
Multi-Tool Types
Pistol
Way too common. Basic stat spread. It technically has the second highest mining stat, I suppose?
• Special Features: Common
• Role: Cheap Early Game Option
Rifle
Common with terrible stats. Slightly higher damage than a pistol, but the other stats are trash.
• Special Features: Common
• Role: Cheap Early Game Option
Alien
An uncommon to rare find in space stations. It has a very balanced stat spread, though it's honestly not great to be second or third best at any given stat.
• Role: Balanced
Experimental
Another uncommon to rare find. Experimentals have a middling Damage and Mining Stat, and are tied for the best in Scanning, which affects their scan range. They are identical, stats-wise, to Royals.
• Special Features: Good stat spread, great scanning range.
• Role: Your first "Good" multitool.
Royal
Identical, stats-wise, to Experimentals. Can only be obtained from Sentinel Pillars.
• Special Features: Good stat spread, great scanning range.
• Role: Your first "Good" multitool.
Sentinel
Can be found in Harmonic Camps. Tied for the best damage stat. They are identical, stat-wise, to Staffs.
• Role: Pew pew
Atlantid
The only Multi-Tool type with the highest Mining Stat. Not only that, but their unique Runic Lens, which behaves like a mining tool, will get extra juice from also having a regular mining tool installed. Is it a bug or a feature? Who knows! They mine VERY fast. You will need to do the Autophage Questline to unlock them. The Runic Lens also provides the Cloaking Tech.
• Special Features: Extra Strong Mining Power, beyond what stats may suggest, Runic Lens includes Cloaking Capability
• Role: Mining
Voltaic Staff
Staves require the Autophage Questline to unlock. It can be pretty satisfying to build your multi-tool out of the pieces you like. Kind of a Star Wars lightsaber thing going on there. Staffs have identical stats to Sentinel Multi-Tools, which include their top-tier damage. They are visible in your hand at all times while they're equipped and they have a lot of unique animations. They really put the effort into making Staffs your late game goal.
• Special Features: Build-a-Staff Workshop, Great Damage
• Role: Endgame Multi-Tool, Looking Wizardy
Base Stats Rolling
Each Multi-Tool type has a range it can roll for its base stats. Base stats cannot be changed, other than through a save editor. It doesn't 1:1 translate into the in-game stats visible to the player, but it will give you an idea of how the different Multi-Tool types compare to each other.
These are all for S-Class Multi-Tool.
Economy Effect on Class
The likelihood of a finding a Multi-Tool of a particular class depends on the economy of the system it is in. On the galaxy map, you can see type of economy of a star system with an Economy Scanner in your Ship or a Interstellar Scanner in your Freighter.
Economies fall into four categories. Outlaw Systems always have Black Market Economies.
The Economy's effect on class chance also applies to Starships and Freighters. So feel free to use this information for other tasks you're working on.
Weapons, +Layouts
Don't know where to find tech research? Check the back of the Anomaly. Never been to Anomaly? Don't worry about it, you'll be directed there after progressing missions.
The tech adjacency layouts here include the ideal supercharged layout. If you can't get the ideal supercharged slots, then you can at least keep the layout for the adjacency bonuses. Orientation of these layouts do not matter, so fit things however you can, tetris-style.
Boltcaster• Ammo:
Before you upgrade it, it feels really basic. Slowly fires shots off. When fully upgraded, it turns into a a short-burst weapon. It is the only weapon the Forbidden Multi-Tool Module affects.
• Ammo:
It's a sniper. Long range charged shot that fires an instantaneous beam. Without fine controls, you're unlikely to be particularly precise, especially with a controller. You might prefer the Neutron Cannon.
• Ammo:
Rapid fires relatively slow projectiles. It's easy, but doesn't stand out in any role.
• Ammo:
Great early game weapon. Short-range, but hits hard. Once you're able to fully upgrade weapons, I recommend giving the Neutron Cannon a try for a similar style that has a longer range and a good splash.
• Ammo:
I'm going to be straight with you. This is the weapon you're going to want. Good range, wide shot, small aoe. Fully upgraded it almost entirely loses its charge time and feels like a long-range shotgun. Some people even prefer to use it for mining instead of the Mining Beam.
• Ammo:
A multi-tool with a Runic Lens (mainly Atlantids) can do some pretty good damage with your mining laser. Better for players who can finely control their aim.
Incinerator
This is a dev tool weapon. It is not available under normal circumstances. It is way overpowered compared to other weapons.

Plasma LauncherAmmo:
A secondary weapon. A grenade launcher. It's okay.
Ammo:
A secondary weapon. AoE stun. Pairs very well with Voltaic Amplifier, granting extra damage on stunned enemies. Very good for stunning entire sentinel waves, or difficult to defeat creatures.
Ammo:
A secondary weapon. Okay for clearing resource deposits.
Recommendations
These are just opinions. If you like the look of one type of multitool, or value other stats, that's perfectly valid.
Early Game
Focus on any Multi-Tool that comes with more tech slots. It can be very time consuming or expensive to get tech slots, so it's not worth trying to upgrade the multi-tool you have. I wouldn't worry about the type you're using right now. When you're ready to get a new multi-tool, you can package up the tech to move over to the new one.
Early-Mid Game
When you're starting to make some money and have access to portals, I recommend following a guide to one of the basic multi-tools that don't have special unlock prerequisites. Touch of the Dance[nomanssky.fandom.com] is a great experimental multi-tool with 24 slots, for example.
You might like an Atlantid. They're very good at Mining due to the way Runic Lens will combine its strength with a Mining Laser, on top of it's Mining Stat. They're really helpful for mining Curious Deposits quickly for
Late Game
At this point of the game, you probably won't be directly mining as much because you've automated the process for most resources. Scanning range isn't too necessary so that leaves damage as the most valuable stat. Now's the time for a Sentinel or Staff multitool. Both will require that you make progress on the Autophage Questline.
