Self Sufficient Challenge
Good Luck!
First Hard Difficulty Attempt: Part 1
Hard Difficulty run. I decided to mine enough to buy the materials for the stone and iron mines, instead of getting a second or third character. This was a mistake. The rationale is that it'll take less food to feed one character than three, and thus food production would be easier. the problem is that food production requires ALOT, like way too much for one character. You need a small shack, a research bench, a wind generator, a well, and at least 4 books for research.
In practice I had set up a base in Vain to avoid river raptors, and so that I wouldn't have to research wheat and baking to grow anything.I mined enough copper to buy enough building materials and iron to set up a mine and stone refinery and refined enough to make a small shack. I then mined some more, went to buy some greenfruit to set up a farm that would be watered by rain, and then ran to the library hidden behind bad teeth, looted the books there, came back, researched, mined, farmed, passed out almost 100 times, and finally at 37 hunger I produced my first bowl of vegetables after dismantling my research bench to get enough building materials for a well to cook it with.
I only survived this far because a holy patrol gifted me a ration pack, otherwise I would've starved to death. Thus, this playthrough will be dedicated to furthering the Holy Light of Okran. Blessed be his name, for it was by him and his servants by whose will it was that I have lived. At least until I lose a limb and transform myself into a demon by replacing it with a bucket.
First Hard Difficulty Run: Part 2
In spite of the farm I set up after much deliberation, things did not get much easier. I faced repeated attacks by beak things that could only be evaded by running into my shack. Inevitably, I would take damage, which would lead to lessened harvests, which combined with the need to increase the size of my farm, led to continued starvation. It was not until my seventh harvest that I finally had enough food to go above 100 hunger again. At this point I continued copper farming to raise enough money to gain another recruit.
On day 19, after two weeks of having to endure ravenous hunger and relentless beak thing attacks alone, I finally recruited my second character.
On day 24 I was able to recruit a third and fourth character, and get enough food to have my hunger go above 200.
On day 25 I was able to start a cotton farm. If all goes well, soon I will begin producing weapons and basic clothing.
Day 27, second small cotton farm, 4 large greenfruit farms now attained. The weapon smith has been made, but I lack the cloth and iron required to produce weapons.
Day 29, trekked to World's End to recruit a couple scorchlanders as smiths. Still have not produced enough cloth to do anything.
Day 33, finally realized I don't need cloth to make weapons at a basic weapon's smith. My immense sufferings have been pointless.
Day 34, I have equipped all 6 of my characters with staffs, I am now sending a buyer out to get better blueprints.
Day 35, the Sabres blueprint has been acquired and production has begun. Once all my men are equipped with swords, I will set out and attempt to find more books.
Day 47, After attaining the sabres I set out and acquired many books, along with 3 ancient science books. After Much conflict with the local beak thing population, I managed to acquire leather for my armor smith after researching leather armor crafting.
Day 51, First Bronze Goal Achieved, I managed to get an XL Cotton Farm. I also full equipped all characters with refitted blades.
Day 55, armor production begun, most characters now have trader's leathers and rattan hats.
Day 61, recruited three more characters, one a hiver, two greenlanders. One of my characters had a leg chewed off, so I stopped caring about holy recruiting standards. All characters now have high level leather clothing, including vests and boots.
Day 64, attained Wakizashi blueprint for use when Polearms are unlocked.
Day 65, attained second Bronze condition of defeating a minor faction raid.Day 66, after repeated beak thing attacks, I got sick of it and started constructing defensive walls around my settlement. also my weapon smith lost his arm.
Day 67, the walls have been finished, another arm was lost in the process.
