The Quickest Rundown on NMS (2025)
A Beginner's Guide to No Man's Sky: Fast-Track to Galactic Mastery (2025)
No Man's Sky is a cosmic masterpiece, crafted by twelve visionary creators, offering a serene universe of exploration and unparalleled tranquility on a scale unmatched in gaming. This guide simplifies your early journey, focusing on salvaging scrap for credits, building a corvette for efficient planet scanning, and completing the ~20-hour main quest lines to unlock glyphs (runes) and tech upgrades critical for endgame goals like reaching the 255th galaxy and building a restaurant at its core. Based on Voyagers (2025), standard survival mode.
Getting Started: First Steps (Hours 1–2)
- Wake Up and Gather: Start on your first planet. Collect sodium (yellow plants) for shields, oxygen (red plants) for life support, and ferrite dust (rocks) for crafting.
- Repair Your Ship: Fix your crashed starship with ferrite and carbon (from plants). Craft a launch thruster fuel (auto-unlocked blueprint) to take off.
- Visit a Space Station: Fly to the nearest station to upgrade your ship, multitool, and unlock exosuit slots. Continue following the guided quests as the intro tutorial is key and takes about an hour.
- Reach the Space Anomaly: Follow the story to summon the Anomaly. Talk to Nada and Polo for quicksilver and story progression. Unlock teleporters for base access. Do missions for nanites to buy upgrades, salvage data for construction blueprints - all tech unlocked at the anomaly, the multiplayer hub.
Building a Custom Spaceship - Corvette
Here is the point where you need to stop following the quests (for about an hour) it prompts you with and locate a planet with "Salvagable Scrap" like this:On this planet you will land then use your visor to locate yellow markers with Salvagable Scrap. You will go to them, use your terrain manipulator to unearth them as they are buried, then destroy them for the parts. These are high value parts you can sell for millions of units early on to take care of your money problems quickly. At the space station the far landing bays are reserved for corvette building and landing, go to them and begin building your corvette, the mini quest will guide you through it. Corvettes are the most ideal method for traveling thru the galaxies since you can keep all your storage containers in them and do not have to land on planets to scan them with your visor. Use "X" while in the cockpit and scroll to "Leave Cockpit" while your vette is hovering. You can walk freely around the ship without it landing.
Main Quest Lines: ~20 Hours to Glyphs and Tech (Hours 12–20)
The main quests (Artemis, Atlas, Anomaly) take ~20 hours and unlock 16 glyphs (runes) for portals and tech upgrades for your ship, suit, and tools. These are key for purple systems and endgame. Artemis Path (10–12 hours):
- Starts with a distress signal (pulse-drive). Follow Artemis’s story to learn about the universe’s simulation.
- Ends with The Purge: Reach the galaxy center, interact with the Atlas, and choose to reset or refuse (unlocks Remembrance blueprint for +3 core health).
Atlas Path (5–7 hours):
- Following the Atlas path will unlock the stargate/portal runes as you progress to new Atlas stations.
- Triggered after warping (red interfaces on map). Craft 9 Atlas Seeds (Wiring Looms + anomalous items) at Atlas stations.
- Ends with The Final Interface: Create a star (Star Seed blueprint for new galaxy access) or gain black-hole navigation.
Anomaly Missions (3–5 hours):
- The Nexus at the Anomaly gives out various missions for an array of rewards.
- Unlocks tech like Void Egg (living ship) and upgrades for multi-tools/suits.
Unlock Purple Systems: (Lengthy but exceptional storyline)
- Finish They Who Returned (Autophage quest from Harmonic Camps, needs Trace of Metal). Warp post-quests to trigger In Stellar Multitudes, revealing indigo (purple) systems with S-class items and paradise planets.
- Biggest reason to unlock purple systems isn't just because the story is good but because some of the coolest things you'll find will be in these systems that are invisible on the map to you until you finish the quests.
SIDE QUESTS ADD ABOUT ANOTHER 5 HOURS.
Profiting Through Interstellar Commerce
Install an Economy Scanner:
- Acquire the Economy Scanner blueprint from the Space Anomaly’s tech vendor (costs ~150 nanites, earned via derelict freighters or missions).
- Install it on your starship or freighter (requires 3 Wiring Looms + 1 Microprocessor).
- Use it in the galactic map to reveal system economy types (e.g., Manufacturing, Trading, Advanced Materials) and strength (1–3 stars).
Secure a Freighter:
- Trigger a freighter rescue mission (3–5 warps, pulse-drive encounter). Defeat pirates to claim a free freighter or buy an S-class later (50–200 million units).
- Use frigate modules to unlock tech and upgrade your Freighter to be able to warp into any system for quick access to your entire cargo inventory.
- Add freighter cargo bulkheads picked up from derelict freighters, crashed freighters on planets, and thru the mission system and guild rewards for inventory space to hold trade goods.
Trading for Profit
Understand Economy Types:- Systems have seven economy types: Manufacturing, Trading, Advanced Materials, Scientific, Mining, Technology, and Power Generation. Each sells specific trade goods at low prices and buys others at high prices.
- Example: Mining systems sell cheap minerals (e.g., Decrypted User Data) and buy tech goods (e.g., Self-Repairing Heridium) at a premium.
- Change the galactic map mode using the arrow keys to economy to see certain system colors to easily identify trade opportunities.
Locate Trade Posts:
- Use the Economy Scanner in the galactic map to identify systems with strong economies (3-star preferred for higher profits).
- Land on a planet and use your ship’s scanner or signal booster (crafted with 1 Metal Plating + 1 Carbon Nanotubes) to locate a Trading Post (marked by a landing pad icon).
- Trade posts offer better prices than space stations and have multiple NPC traders for bulk sales.
Exploit Trade Surges:
- Check the Galactic Trade Terminal at trade posts for Trade Surge indicators (temporary price spikes, up to +80% sell value).
- Buy low-cost trade goods (e.g., 5 units of Enormous Metal Cogs in a Manufacturing system, ~200,000 units) and sell in a system that demands them (e.g., Technology system, ~1 million units per stack).
Systems types you buy in on the left then sell to on the right:
- Map a circuit of 3–5 systems with complementary economies (e.g., Mining → Technology → Manufacturing). Warp between them using your freighter’s hyperdrive.
- Buy goods at ~20–30% below galactic average (check terminal prices) and sell at ~50–80% above in surge systems. Each run can yield 5–20 million units.
- Example: Buy Decrypted User Data (Mining, 150,000/stack), sell in Technology (800,000/stack); buy Self-Repairing Heridium (Technology, 200,000/stack), sell in Mining (1 million/stack).
A Never Ending Journey thru the Stars
Rune portals, activated by the 16 glyphs (runes) unlocked via the Atlas Path (~10–12 hours into the main quest line), enable instantaneous travel to any location within the same galaxy, bypassing arduous warp sequences. This facilitates rapid access to specific planets, systems, or player bases. You can find planet glyph addresses across any online NMS community to reach big planet hubs where players congregate and can find people online within these systems to network with. Glyphs are also important for finding unique planets, multitools, ships, and various other cool things worth exploring. To get a planets glyph address go into screenshot mode and capture the glyph address in the lower left corner of the screen or use the discovery tab to get the address.

Return via the same portal (re-enter the original coordinates) or use a space station teleporter to warp back to your base/freighter.
IF YOU WANNA SURVIVE IN THIS UNIVERSE YOU GOTTA KNOW WHERE YOUR TOWEL IS!! Portals only work for travel within the same galaxy, you cannot use them to travel to different galaxies. For that you have to travel to the center, and theres a set of portal runes that work in any galaxy that will put you within 5k light years of the center:

Acquire All 16 Glyphs:
- Progress through the Atlas Path (initiated via distress signal in pulse-drive). Portal glyphs for any planet you are currently in photo capture mode will be shown in the lower left hand corner, use steams native screenshot hotkey to capture them, the in game click to take picture will exclude them from the final shot.
- Alternatively, visit space stations and look for glowing alien travelers who will direct you to their graves where u can collect a portal rune. It costs nanites to get their location.
- Just completing the full Atlas path will unlock all 16 runes and it has to be completed so you can unlock purple systems later on.
Locate a Portal:
- Use a planetary signal booster (crafted with 1 Metal Plating + 1 Carbon Nanotubes) to scan for “Monolith” or “Portal” structures. Portals are large, ring-shaped edifices, often near ancient ruins.
- Alternatively, ask NPCs at space stations for portal coordinates or use the Anomaly’s teleporter to visit player-shared portal bases which will be named "Galaxy name/Portal" or something indicating there is a portal at the location.
- Best but most expensive way is to fully upgrade your Roamer Exocraft's radar and use it to search for Alien Monoliths. Solve the riddle at the monolith, then access the monolith again after success and choose "Locate a Portal".
Activate the Portal:
- Approach the portal’s control terminal. Charge it with resources (e.g., sodium, oxygen, ferrite dust—contextual to planet biome).
- Input a 12-digit glyph sequence (e.g., Bird, Sunset, Tree icons) to target a specific system. Find coordinates via:Community-shared addresses on X or Reddit (e.g., r/NMSCoordinateExchange for S-class ship or exotic planet locations).
- In-game discoveries (friends’ bases or visited systems).
Travel and Return:
Step through the portal to arrive instantly at the destination planet/system within the same galaxy (e.g., Euclid). Explore, trade, or claim bases.Return via the same portal (re-enter the original coordinates) or use a space station teleporter to warp back to your base/freighter.
Endgame: 255th Galaxy and Galactic Restaurant (Hours 1000+)
- Cross Galaxies: Use the Star Seed or black-hole chains (Atlas reward) to jump through 255 galaxies. Glyphs allow portal travel to each galaxy’s core.
- Build a Base in Each Galaxy: So that you have a fast travel way back to the galaxy. The build limit is 400 bases with a combined parts limit of 21,000
- Reach the Center: In the 255th galaxy (e.g., Eissentam or Hilbert), use a portal to reach the center. Choose to reset (new galaxy) or stay (loop with rewards). Or play it smart, stay, embrace the journey of the 42 and know you're right where you need to be in the entire universe of destinations.
- Build Your Restaurant: At the 255th galaxy’s core, construct a Galactic Commission Station (restaurant blueprint from Anomaly quests). Add nutrient processors and trade terminals to create a cosmic eatery overlooking the galaxy’s edge—a monument to your journey, and the answer to life - the universe - and everything (42-42-42).
Join one of the many planet hub communities or the Stellar Towel Society if you are really a fan of Douglas Adams and the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - find Cafe 42, and get yourself a dinosaur on planet Lowella as a pet. See (You) at the restaurant at the center of galaxy 255 space cowboy!
