Tips for new Oxygen Not Included players
The information
I'm making this guide because I'm tired of seeing bad tips, so hopefully this guide will provide some useful tips when playing.
When playing ONI, you should focus on things like this:
(1 is most important, and 5 is the least important.)
- Oxygen (Dupes can't breath if there isn't any oxygen, you can view this with F1)
- Food (You will get a "starving" alert if a duplicant is under 1,000 kcals. A healthy duplicant usually has about 3,000 kcals stored, you can see this by clicking on a dupe.)
- Power (Power is essential for running machines later on, but also for powering certain oxygen machines early on. Research reactors and petroleum generators are excellent mid-late game ways to get power, and coal generators are a good way to get power early game without as much dupe labor. Power overlay can be seen with F2)
- Luxuries (Luxuries help dupes prevent getting stressed, but I suggest doing this after you have the basics down. If you're doing stuff correctly early on, you likely don't have dupes wanting to scream.)
- Decor (Decor passively increase duplicant morale, but having "ugly" decor exposure should be expected if you have dupes working in industrial areas all the time. You can view average decor with F8)
Work top-down
---
1 - You usually have enough algae to last hundreds of cycles. Don't move to advanced oxygen production like SPOMs immediately, unless your planetoid start demands you to (e.g. lush core trait, or radioactive ocean planetoid) and you have a renewable or long-lasting water source in addition to being able to cool the oxygen. Make sure your machines inside are at least made of gold amalgam or steel, or else they will eventually overheat.
1a - You should have buffer tanks in case you entirely rely on renewable water geysers, which will store water until the geyser becomes active again. 10 is a good number.
2 - Mealwoods use dirt, do not make industrial-sized farms with them, or you will potentially see the entire downfall of your colony like I did once. They also require no water or light, but they are one of the least calorie-dense foods in the game.
3 - Try to not use lights or farm bristle blossoms until you have proper cooling methods, they will only hasten the death of your colony if you are unprepared or do not have enough renewable water at your disposal.
3a - As a side note, bristle blossoms require light and water, but require no dirt. Keep in mind that manufactured lights produce heat and consume power. Bristle blossoms are a decent mid-late game food once you're ready to farm them.
4 - Do not be afraid of slimelung germs, they only increase oxygen consumption and thrive on slime or polluted oxygen. You can easily get rid of them with deodorizers, and you can prevent them from getting in your base by using liquid locks and deodorizers. Just make sure your algae distsillers are outside of your base if you happen to have slime biomes spawning on your planetoid.
4a - Deodorizers require filtration medium to run, like sand, and require duplicants to supply the sand every now and then. They convert this sand into clay as well as po2 to o2.
5 - You can use aquetuners in combination with steam turbines, just make sure they're made of steel (or better material) and not some random ore. Alternatively, if you need to improvise, you can attempt using gold amalgam instead and hope you get the desired results.
