Introduction

Hi!
Here is a list of interesting Amnesia Custom stories (as forJanuary 2026). I will divide them into 3 categories:

Bronze – Good custom stories, but with some flaws.
Silver – Really good custom stories, you can expect decent quality.
Gold – The best of the best currently available to play.

The order of the mods on the lists is NOT RANDOM – I list them from worst to best in their category.

The criteria I used to rate each mod are:
  • Plot
  • Level Design
  • Originality
  • Fear/Atmosphere
  • Puzzles
  • Overall experience

DISCLAIMER

I have only selected the custom stories that I found most interesting and enjoyed playing them. Naturally, there are many more, but I didn't want this article to be too long. All information contained in this guide is based solely on my personal opinion. I am just a regular player, like you, and our opinions may differ. Please don't be offended if your favorite mod is ranked lower than you would like or is not mentioned at all.

BRONZE

#5 Abduction

Author: Anxt
Length: 2 hours

In this mod, you once again take on the role of Daniel. After escaping from Brennenburg, he leads a peaceful and decent life, but Alexander returns and, to put it mildly, is not happy with what we did to him before. The plot is not particularly creative or innovative, but it provides an interesting look at what might have happened after the Dark Descent and attempts to expand the game world with its own ideas. The level design is simple, consisting of the usual corridors and rooms familiar from the base game, so there's nothing special about it, but it's well done. The puzzles later in the game can be confusing, and some of them require you to search for absurdly well-hidden items – they could definitely have been better designed. In terms of scares, it's a solid position. The atmosphere is very similar to that of the base game, and while it's not perfect, it's scary enough to enjoy the entire experience. All in all, it's a basic custom story of decent length, making it a solid choice for a longer evening.
#4 Memories from the past

Author: GiivaSunner
Length: 1,5 hours

This mod act as a prequel to Dark Descent and tells the story of Daniel, who is searching for answers about the curse he brought back with him from Algeria. I don't think the plot and the way it is told in this cs are particularly interesting; they only serve as background. The whole mod doesn't seem like one big story , but rather a series of levels that have nothing to do with each other. Speaking of levels, they are quite average. They're not bad, just average. The character voices, while a nice touch, aren't very good quality. The puzzles are mostly well balanced, but later in the game they become more confusing and it's very likely that you'll get stuck unless you're lucky and find well-hidden items. Besides, they are not very creative or interesting. Now let's talk about the horror aspect, because this is where this mod really stands out. The disturbing atmosphere in some locations and a few very well-executed moments are sure to get your heart racing. Some encounters are truly unexpected, which is a huge plus. Overall, this is an average but well-made mod that is worth your time, even though it's nothing new or particularly amazing.
#3 The Coward's Debt

Author: Damascus7
Length: 1,5 hours

A fairly short but interesting custom story. The plot is original and features several interesting, unexpected twists that kept me hooked on the game. Very good sound design, well-designed environments, and interesting monsters create a dark and scary atmosphere. The puzzles were mostly well-balanced, but I did get a little confused with one of them. Unfortunately, this mod isn't very scary, encounters with monsters are rare and not very dangerous. Overall, it's a short but solid experience, but in terms of horror, the whole thing didn't pack enough punch.
#2 Castle Grunburgh

Author: RadioJezus
Length: 1- 1,5 hours

A relatively new entry on this list, Castle Grunburgh is a very well-designed, albeit relatively basic experience. There is a plot of sorts, but it's not particularly exciting, and I found it quite difficult to follow what was actually going on. In terms of gameplay, it's pure, classic Amnesia in a slightly refreshed form – there are a few interesting moments where you can experience goosebumps. The puzzles aren't particularly interesting – for the most part, they're recycled from The Dark Descent with a few changes – but at least they don't cause too much trouble. I only had a problem with one (pipe puzzle). The mod isn't long, but it's really solid - an interesting proposition for one evening.
#1 Voyage of Horror: Director's cut

Authors: TheBackPackPlayer94, ValG, DoctorD, Skog
Length: 3,5 hours

The original version was released back in May 2024, and a year later we got Voyage of Horror Director's Cut, which is a significant improvement over its predecessor. Inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft, this custom story combines an decent enough plot with a well-designed environment, adds a few custom elements, and spices it all up with mostly balanced puzzles. The custom monsters that appear here are worth noting, as we are dealing with some of the most unexpected encounters we can observe in custom stories, and the monster design itself is perfectly disturbing. The puzzles can be confusing at times, maybe even forcing you to look for a walktrough online- which is always a minus for me. This mod also includes a boss fight - I'm not a fan of such things in Amnesia mods, but I respect the desire to be original. The fight itself is not very scary or interesting, and the music before the final showdown - let's just say it's not my taste - but the visuals are quite good.

SILVER

#5 Fleeing Brennenburg

Author: florian.
Length: 2-3 hours

This custom story has a unique and interesting plot idea: we follow Daniel's fate during the “revenge ending” from the main Amnesia game, as he escapes from Alexander's fortress. The idea of playing Dark Descent in reverse order, revisiting familiar locations and discovering new ones, is very creative and refreshing. The whole thing is very well done, with locations and assets mainly coming from the base game, but I can turn a blind eye to that because it makes sense in this case, and the new locations are very well designed and interesting. We even have custom monsters here, so I can't accuse the developer of laziness and copying assets – that's a big plus. As for fear, there are some really good moments that will significantly increase your heart rate. The atmosphere is very similar to that of the original Dark Descent. The puzzles in this mod are fun and creative, well-balanced, adding variety to the whole instead of frustration. There are also multiple endings, depending on your choices and optional actions, which is a very nice touch and the icing on the cake of this solid, custom story.
#4 Helena

Author: Shriek-a-Boo Entertainment
Lentgth: 4 Hours

Released in February 2024, Helena is quite an interesting experience. I really liked this mod – the story was interesting and well written, and – almost as important as the story itself – it was told in an interesting way. The characters' voices were great and engaging, and the notes perfectly complemented the story. The monsters hunting us, though familiar, have been enhanced with new voice lines that are deeply disturbing, to say the least. Our character also has new voice lines when his mental health is low, which is a nice touch.
The level design is excellent: this mod features some of the best-designed and most detailed locations of any custom story available. Every corner is so detailed that it really impresses and adds to the atmosphere.
Speaking of atmosphere and fear – Helena has done a great job, it's not as scary as some of its competitors, but some sequences are definitely intense.
The puzzles are well balanced for most part– they require some thought, but you won't get stuck on them for too long, which would ruin the gaming experience. The only problem I have with some of them is that they require quite a bit of backtracking, especially the last one. One of the puzzles (3 statues) was the point where I got stuck, not knowing how to solve it and forcing me to watch the walktrough.
In summary: a very well-designed environment combined with expert-level tension building and sound design create an experience you will remember. There are modifications with much more custom content, but Helena shows that less can mean more.
#3 Obscurity
Author: ElectricRed
Length: 2 hours

Obscurity is a very good custom story. The plot is interesting and nicely told throughout the game, and it also has one of the darkest endings I've seen in an Amnesia mod. The maps are simple, created exclusively from Amnesia resources, with nothing new, but the locations are well done and have a terrifying atmosphere. Honestly, I'm amazed at how well the author consistently builds tension and the feeling of being watched – especially at the beginning. Unfortunately, later on, the game becomes more predictable and loses some of its previous charm. The custom monsters, with one of the best "Danger" themes in custom stories, will most likely make your heartbeat faster. Another thing worth noting is that Obscurity has some of the best puzzles in all of custom stories – they are creative, interesting, but not so difficult as to distract from the carefully and very well crafted atmosphere. The author shows us that in the hands of a skilled craftsman, even basic resources can build something unique and suspenseful.
A very, VERY good choice for one evening.
#2 KEY TO FREEDOM

Author: MXDash
Length: Approximately 2 hours

This mod is synonymous with quality. The storyline, while not something extraordinary, kept me hooked from start to finish. You play the role of a young, naughty brat who is challenged by the school principal to break into an old mansion and retrieve a key. This key will grant you freedom from the juvenile detention center, but obtaining it will not be an easy task.
The absolutely MASTERFULLY created atmosphere is noteworthy here. This mod uses some of the most creative scaring techniques I've ever seen, not only in custom stories, but in horror games in general – subtle glimpses of dark creatures lurking in the shadows, terrifying sounds from unknown sources, and much more – it's so well done that I was shocked and speechless. Constant tension, fear, and the feeling of being watched (quite justified) accompanied me throughout the whole game. The level design is simple but very detailed and varied. The only thing I miss here is good quality voice acting (this mod doesn't have any at all) and maybe a few new, interesting monsters that could chase us. Either way, KEY TO FREEDOM is a really solid choice for an evening full of excitement.
#1 The Great Work

Author: Damascus7
Length: 5-6 hours

I feel placing this mod so low in this ranking will be controversial, as Great Work is a favorite for many and is considered an all-time classic. In my opinion, Great Work is good but overrated, yet it still provides a good horror experience. The plot is interesting and features several historical organizations and characters, spicing them up with its own twists and turns. Following the storyline can be difficult due to the way the notes are written – this story requires focus and connecting the dots yourself if you want to fully experience it. But daaamn it's really worth it, because the plot is second only to the first position on this list.
The maps are well-designed, varied, detailed, and contain several interesting custom elements.
Atmosphere and fear are areas where this CS sets high standards – numerous custom monsters, expert use of lighting, custom music, sound effects, and much more –this creates such a heavy, dark atmosphere that it simply breathtaking. The new monsters are absolutely terrifying and, in my opinion, are the best-designed antagonists in all of the custom stories.
This mod is almost perfect on paper, but it has one, extremely major flaw that prevented me from fully enjoying it and placing it higher on this list – the puzzles.
This mod features some of the most creative puzzles of any custom story, but their difficulty significantly detracts from the enjoyment of the game. They are confusing and often lack any clues as to what to do. Some puzzles, such as the one with the key and the strange door, had such absurd solutions that I would never have figured them out. You will definitely get stuck in many places, going around in circles unless you are some sort of puzzle-solving god with a god**mn IQ of 160.
A truly solid experience built on great locations, fabulous voice acting, chilling and well-crafted horror atmosphere, and an intriguing story—all of which falls apart when you constantly have to look into the walkthrough because you don't know what to do next.
This is the only reason why The Great Work is so low on this list, but it is still worth playing if you haven't experienced it yet, as the rest is top notch.

GOLD

#4 The Things in the Night

Author: doom2299
Length: 6-7 hours

Such a classic. This custom story offers an engaging plot with several interesting twists and turns. The notes are mostly well written, but could explain the course of events a little more clearly.
The maps are very well designed, often large, varied, and pleasing to the eye, thanks to the very creative use of Amnesia's resources, combined in a way we haven't seen before.
When it comes to fear, this mod is a very strong contender. It keeps you in suspense throughout the whole game – the atmosphere is very skillfully created using various tools such as good lighting, music/sounds, and solid level design. Encounters with monsters can be unexpected and nerve-wracking.
Once again, the biggest bane of this mod, as well as many others, are the puzzles. They could be better designed – they often require searching for absurdly well-hidden items or objects, which will most likely send you on a quick trip to the walkthrough for a solution.
Another thing that bothers me here is the lack of voice acting – it's a shame, because if done right, it could take this mod to a whole new level.
In summary – The Things in the Night is the pinnacle of non-total conversion mods for me – it has a lot to offer and is a must-play for anyone who likes good horror game.
#3 Lifeless: Descent into Abandon

Authors : Badcat, ValG, Dr. 痛み™
Length: 3-4 hours

Released in December 2025, Lifeless: Descent into Abandon is a total conversion remake of the 2014 mod Lifeless the Abandon.
This mod is an absolute masterpiece: it has a pretty good storyline that provides a nice backdrop for the whole thing, but the gameplay itself is pure poetry.
Let's start with the visuals: the locations are beautiful, sometimes even making you wonder if this is still the good old Amnesia. Everything is very detailed and well-designed; you can simply feel that the creators approached the subject with passion and poured their hearts into it. The puzzles are very interesting – challenging but not absurdly difficult, and satisfying – a small downside is that sometimes we have to do something the way the authors intended and not “our way.” Ultimately, they are very well-done and did not force me to look at the walkthrough even once, not breaking my immersion. The atmosphere and fear are kept at a very high level (Basement level: OH MY GOD). The use of monsters throughout the game is very skillful – it often puts us in very stressful situations and some encounters are truly unpredictable – but the whole thing doesn't tire us out. In summary, this is a really high-quality piece of content, a modern take on the classic Amnesia done right. Highly recommending this one.

#2 Tenebris Lake

Author: Boris Game Studios
Length: 3-4 hours

Tenebris Lake, a classic released back in 2012, still holds up great and provides a terrifying experience. The plot is the weakest point of this custom story – it's not very interesting and serves more as a backdrop for the real action. The maps are huge, well-designed, and memorable. Honestly, it's amazing how huge some of them are. However, even though the maps are an important element, they are not the reason we are here. The reason is...

Fear...

This is where Tenebris Lake truly shines and crushes its competition. The atmosphere is so dark, heavy, and disturbing that I can't call it anything other than art: lighting, ambient sounds, and placement of fear-inducing elements are perfect and create several memorable, nightmarish moments. The tension is so masterfully maintained throughout the game that it simply amazed me. There are about whopping 5 custom monsters here, and all of them are nightmare fuel and will make your heart beat much faster with fear. Many encounters are unpredictable, nerve-wracking and extremely dangerous. Combine that with skillful use of scripting, dark, scary locations, and top-notch sound design, and you have a recipe for success. The puzzles aren't too difficult and serve as an interesting break from sh**ting your pants, rather than an annoying element.
It's just a brilliantly made mod and scariest on this list - if it doesn't absolutely destroy you, then probably no other custom story will. If you haven't tried it yet and you're looking for a truly terrifying experience - the good ol' Tenebris Lake is what you're looking for.

#1 Glicea: The Vessel

Author: starstormm
Length: Approximately 10 hours

Oh my God, I don't even know what to begin with. This is a MASTERPIECE. It feels wrong for me to even compare Glicea: The Vessel to other mods—it's in a completely different league. The plot and the lore are light years ahead of anything I've seen in Amnesia modding so far. A very thoughtfully crafted world , complete with its own lore, rules, culture, very well-written and in-depth notes, high-quality voice acting... I just want MORE of this universe. Locations? My God, they're not even huge, they're ABSOLUTELY GIGANTIC. I'm amazed at how such vast spaces don't seem empty at the same time, everything is extremely intricate and meticulously detailed, everything is thought out and nothing seems out of place. Good level design can be seen in many mods, but what the author has done here is simply art. A whole bunch of custom assets and new mechanics made me forget sometimes that this was still Amnesia. Speaking of new mechanics, we have a unique regenerating lamp and a magic system. A magic system. In FREAKIN' AMNESIA.
As is usually the case, the game is varied with puzzles, and they also deserve recognition. They are perfectly balanced - challenging for the brain, but at the same time offering enough hints so as not to be frustrating or too confusing. I was forced only 2 times to check the walktrough for solution - which is acceptable .
It is worth noting that the puzzles are also very unique and require an unconventional approach – I particularly liked those using the aforementioned magic system and the symmetry one.
As for fear and atmosphere, which are the essence of Amnesia, we have a very high level here. Admittedly, it is not the level of terror offered by Tenebris Lake, but the whole thing has well-placed encounters with monsters, adrenaline-rushing escape sequences (not confusing ones!), and nerve-wracking stealth. The presence of custom monsters should also come as no surprise in a mod of this quality, not tomention that we have to deal with each one in a different way!

To sum it all up, I'm simply speechless. To think that all this is the work of one person is crazy to me. The whole thing feels like official DLC to the original game rather than a mod. Everything here is just... perfect. To understand how big the gap is between Glicea: The Vessel and other custom stories, you have to experience it for yourself. Get yourself plenty of free time, without distractions, and immerse yourself in this world. It's not a game - it's an experience. Experience that you will remember.
