Understanding Hacknet & How to play it properly!

#Hello and Welcome Hacknet Apprentice! In this guide, I will go over Hacknet itself, How the commands are used, Diffrent Factions or Groups in Hacknet, what to do when stuck, how Hacknet is more realistic than other Hacking Simulator Games, and more! This Guide is recommended for Players who are new to this Genre, type of game and a bit of UNIX (Which is what the game uses, especially for it's commands.)

#Hacknet(OS)'s commands are based off of actual UNIX commands, Hacknet is not your average TV Show or Hollywood Movie Hacker game. Hacknet is something diffrent, something more real. Hacknet uses a realistic Terminal, GUI (Menu), Netmap, some sort of Memory/Task bar. The most realistic feature of the game has to be the Terminal as you wouldnt really have that GUI in real-life hacking. If you dont know already, the Terminal is case-sensitive (in real-life and in Hacknet) so make sure you spell everything correctly! There are a couple of ways you can make hacknet more realistic just by changing how you play the game. Hacknet's GUI is also customizable.
If you still dont really get it, try wathcing some Lets Plays on Youtube (or play it yourself!).
# Here is screenshot of Hacknet, as you can see, this was taken while someone was hacking into a computer. I also took the liberty of Boxing/Color coding the features of the GUI. The Red, Green, Blue, and Orange boxes will not be in the game, I can asure you.

Allow me to explain those a bit more...

#The Terminal plays a huge roll in this game and in actual hacking. The Terminal is where you execute code to tell the computer what to do (Keep in mind, its uses UNIX Commands!). The Terminal is case sensitive meaning if you spell a command wrong, the Terminal (or computer) will not recognize the command and give you a error (Check Syntax). There are some wild cards you can use to make some commands faster (as in easier to type) such as *.

As you play the game, you will be using the terminal 70-80% of the time, but if you dont touch the Menu at all then call it 90% of the time.

#The netmap is where all your previeous or current connections to other Computers/Servers/IP's will be stored. Other than re-typing the IP in the Terminal, you can just click the Computer in the netmap. [WARNING!] IF YOU CHNAGE YOUR x-server.sys FOR A DIFFRENT THEME OTHER THAN THE NORMAL/ORIGINAL THEME, THE NETMAP COLORS MAY VARY! If you see a Green dot, that is YOUR Computer/PC. If a dot is Blue, that means you are currently NOT connected to that Computer/Server/IP. If a dot is White, that means you are currently connected to that Computer/Server/IP. If a dot is Red on the netmap, that means you are currently attacking that Computer/Server/IP. If a dot is Yellow on the netmap (without you placeing/hovering your mouse over it), that means you currently have a shell running on that computer (Which can be used to Overflow a Proxy.)

When you cant use the Terminal (for whatever reason), you can use the menu. The Menu has a very freindly GUI and makes the game eaiser to play/hack, BUT less realistic. You are able to Probe/use nmap to scan the ports, scan the computer for outgoing connections to other computers, Login to a computer, disconnect, view the filesystem, and more. Although it may be easier to use the Menu, you cannot do absolutly everything on the Menu. When hacking a Computer (in Hacknet), you may be using both the Menu and the Terminal or just the Terminal. There are somethings that require you to use the Terminal and or Menu while hacking a system such as needing to Overload a Proxy with a shell. Through out the game you will most likely be using both the Menu and the Terminal. In some Missions, more than the other. Let me map this out for you. The Menu is pretty much a Display.

Using the Menu, you can:
• Probe
  
• Login
  
• View Filesystem
  
• View Logs
  
• Scan Network
  
• Disconnect from computer

  What you CANT do using the Menu:
  
• Actually hack into the system
  
• Use/Run .exe's or Hack Programs on Port Numbers
  
• Edit or Create Files
  
• Move Files or Folders

So, anything you can and cant do in the Menu, you can do in the Terminal.

Basiclly RAM in the game. (Random Access Memory) You have a certian amount of Memory in your Computer that is available. If you are running too many shells, Notes, or exe's open, you will not be able to run anything else until you end or "kill" the tasks. If you are hacking into a computer using the hack exe's (like SSHCrack and FTPBounce) they will end automaticlly. That doesnt mean you can run a endless amount of them at once.

When you progress more in the game, you will get to a point in the game where you start getting Traced by the Computers you are trying to hack in Hacknet. Some Computers will complete the trace a lot faster than the other, so you have to be quick. The Trace Display will appear on the bottom left corner of your screen with a timer. You have to beat the Trace.

Your HacknetOS/In-Game Computer will crash. You will get whats called a "Blue Screen Of Death" or "BSOD" for short. Don't worry, this screen is shown for about 5 seconds then your In-Game Computer reboots. However, there are certian computers that will complete the Trace and you will have a chance to hack into the ISP Mainframe to change your IP.

On some Computers, it is possible, but most computers in Hacknet.. No. There is a .exe/Executable you can get further in the story to stop the Trace, but it requires you to first hack into the system before you can launch it as it takes up A LOT of RAM. If you (somehow) have the Admin Login, use it. You will save youself a lot of time and effort.

That's a big no. You will not lose any of your data (such as files) after the trace and BSOD.

SSHCrack.exe is the first executable hacking program/tool you will get when you complete the first couple Jobs for Bit. SSHCrack has to be one of the fastest (in my opinion) exe's you will get in Hacknet. It takes up a Fair amount of RAM, but you will be able to run other exe's as well.
