Intro

This guide will give you an overview of all "ownerless ships" in the X4 Open Universe gamemode as well as detailed maps and descriptions on how to get to the ships! If you are still relatively new to the game, consider checking the FAQ section of the guide. Should you have questions not covered in the guide, ask away in the comments!

I hope the guide is of use to you. Godspeed!

Changelog

Update 10.06.2026
No new ships in the 9.00 patch! This guide update is mostly for the visual changes on the map and to add the plot-related ships we have been talking about in the comments.
  • Maps updated to 9.00 RC2
  • Imgur albums (Ship Gallery & Maps) updated to 9.00 RC2
  • New Plots section for plot-related ownerless ships!
  • FAQ section expanded

Update 31.08.2025
I expanded the guide to include all ownerless ships (not just the ones from Timelines), added a small FAQ and replaced the visuals with new ones from the 8.00 RC1. I assume the Envoy Pack will not introduce new ships for this guide, so the next major update will probably come with the 'exploration update' Egosoft is working on.

I also uploaded an album of the various ships and their paintmods to Imgur, and made a separate album with the guide's images as a backup should Steam decide to stop showing images:
Still, do let me know in the comments if something goes missing again.

FAQ

  • Q: What is an ownerless ship?

AThese ships are not owned by any NPC faction and can be claimed by the player. They are also available immediately upon starting a new savegame in the Open Universe game mode (the Timelines rewards are available as soon as you unlock them in the Timelines game mode).

  • Q: How do I claim these ships?

AYou can spacewalk to them by leaving your ship in a spacesuit, then toggle on Scan Mode (default key: Shift+2) and either scan or repair laser the pulsating red data leak on the ship (usually located near the ship's spacesuit docking bay).

Alternatively, if you have a ship controlled by one of your captains and at least one marine onboard, you can also order that ship to capture a specified ownerless ship (if it is nearby) to avoid having to spacewalk to it. However, the marine will partially damage the ship's hull (it cannot get destroyed from this penalty) and the ship might lose some of its previous equipment. So if you are collecting these for their monetary value then spacewalking is the preferred method.

If you would like a visual guide: Daniel Kwan made a brief video where they showcase how to capture ships. Check it out!

  • Q: Can I have multiple copies of the ownerless Timelines ships?

AYes! The Terran ships and the Commonwealth sport variants unlock research projects for Boso Ta after you capture them. You can then complete these research projects to unlock each ship's blueprints. However, you do need your own player wharf to construct them.

The Xenon ships are not unique (outside of their paintmods) and if you lose these, you will have to capture more on your own (Fs and Bs will sometimes get abandoned while fighting them, while Hs can only be boarded (extremely difficult until mid- or lategame due to their high boarding resistance and small crew space).

  • Q: I can't find a ship! Where is it?

AWhen you use the maps in this guide to find the location in your own game, make sure to only use jump gates and resource fields as reference points! Stations and other objects usually have wildly different locations (either because it was determined by the universe seed at gamestart or because it was randomly placed afterwards), so they are unreliable as guides.

  • Q: I still can't find it!! What's happening?

AIf you have the Cradle of Humanity DLC, there is a small chance that a Yaki squadron passed by the target ship and claimed it for their own use. Especially at gamestart or when the DLC was just activated, there are Yaki squadrons throughout the universe and they might claim some of the ownerless ships that are close to the map center (before being shot down by patrols).

It happened to me with the Osprey Vanguard during the 9.00 Public Beta. In those cases, you will have to reload an earlier save or accept the loss.

Additionally, some mods might modify the map in such a way that the ship will no longer spawn (for example because the sector simply doesn't exist or the ship was removed).

F1: Courier Vanguard

Note: the ship is distant enough that random encounters may spawn nearby, including small wings of Xenon/Kha'ak.

F2: Drill (Mineral) Vanguard

F3: Elite Vanguard

Note: the ship is distant enough that random encounters can spawn nearby, including small wings of Xenon/Kha'ak.

F4: Odysseus Vanguard

Minor Gameplay Spoilers: getting to the Odysseus is not particularly difficult, getting it out can be a challenge though. The minefields alone easily overcome the hardpoint shields and destroy most hardpoints after a couple explosions, leaving you without engines and without defenses in enemy territory.

Personally I recommend sticking to the asteroid fields on your way back, as the minefields and asteroid fields do not blend into each other. There is a curve you can fly that will make you pass multiple asteroid fields until you reach the sector's superhighway, making this process much easier.

F5: Osprey Vanguard

F6: Perseus Vanguard

TL1: Xenon B

Requires at least one star in the Terminus "Attack On Antigone" in Graph 2

TL2: Cutlass

Requires at least one star in the Nodus "Signal Strength" in Graph 6
Note: the ship is distant enough that random encounters can spawn nearby, including small wings of Xenon/Kha'ak.

TL3: Elite Sport

Requires at least one star in the Nodus "Asteroid Dash" in Graph 1

TL4: Xenon F

Requires at least one star in the Nodus "Impeded Extraction" in Graph 1

TL5: Xenon H

Requires at least one star in the Terminus "The Fade" in Graph 1

Minor Gameplay Spoilers: The difficulty for capturing the H is usually dependent on how attentive the Xenon patrol the sector. Make sure to shake off any trailing Xenon fighters as they will likely shoot down your ship while you are busy capturing the H.

Thankfully the H has an S-sized docking bay. You can immediately go back to your ship after capturing the H and dock it on the destroyer, then fly both ships back into safe space.

TL6: Kestrel Sport

Requires at least one star in the Nodus "Station Circuit" in Graph 3
Note: the ship is distant enough that random encounters can spawn nearby, including small wings of Xenon/Kha'ak.

Minor Gameplay Spoilers: There are hidden Xenon asteroids near the ship that might be in range to open fire on you.

TL7: Odachi

Requires at least one star in the Terminus "Flight of the Dragonfyre" in Graph 6
Note: the ship is distant enough that random encounters can spawn nearby, including small wings of Xenon/Kha'ak.

TL8: Sapporo

Requires at least one star in the Terminus "Flight of the Dragonfyre" in Graph 6
Minor Gameplay Spoilers: This one can be really tricky depending on how it spawned at the Kha'ak hive. Capturing the Sapporo can be difficult: if the patrolling Kha'ak destroyer does not beam you to death, the station's turrets, defence platforms or patrolling fighter swarm might.

In my experience one reliable way is to get a fast S-sized ship with a captain, position it so the Sapporo sits between you and the Kha'ak hive, then jump into your spacesuit and fly the rest of the way 'on foot' (make sure to send your ship away so it does not get shot down by the Kha'ak).

The Kha'ak will not shoot at your spacesuit, but as soon as you capture the Sapporo they will start firing at it so you have to get in fast and gain distance as quickly as possible.

TL9: Theseus Sport

Requires at least one star in the Nodus "Spaceport Stride" in Graph 2
Note: the ship is distant enough that random encounters can spawn nearby, including small wings of Xenon/Kha'ak.

Minor Gameplay Spoilers: There are hidden Xenon asteroids near the ship that might be in range to open fire on you. But depending on how long the Timelines DLC has been active in your savegame the pirates that patrol this system may have cleared them out already.

★: Valuable Lockbox

Requires at least one star in the Terminus "Battle of Omicron Lyrae" in Graph 5
Minor Gameplay Spoilers: The "Valuable Lockbox" refers to the 10-lock lockbox near the debris chunk - the debris chunk itself also has a generic lockbox hidden inside, which usually only drops one Security Bypass System.

Content of the 10-lock lockbox:
2x Advanced Seminar for 4-Star Crew (Piloting), 2x Advanced Seminar for 4-Star Crew (Management) and 1x Kyon Crystal

KE1: Grouper (Mineral)

Plots

There are a few ownerless ships that will only be available after progressing a story plot to a certain extent:
HQ Plot: A faction-based Frigate
This ship is only available if you don't have the Kingdom End DLC or disabled it, as the game will then switch to the "original" HQ plot where you meet and rescue Boso Ta.

The first step of this plot involves scanning your first data leak on any* station in the universe, which will then lead into a conversation with Boso Ta. Later during the plot, you will return to the exact same station and an ownerless frigate will spawn close to the mission's guidance.

What's interesting is that the frigate type will always be of the same faction who owns the station. For example, in the screenshot below I scanned the leak on an ARG factory, and the spawned frigate was a Cerberus (with random equipment). This is reproduceable behavior so I suppose it's intentional ... anyway, you can claim the frigate right there and it will remain yours from then on.

* The stations of some smaller factions will not trigger the convo with Boso Ta and therefore not start the HQ plot, for example HAT stations.

(Split Vendetta DLC) Free Families Plot: Cobra
This Cobra is more of an honorable mention because the FF plot will actually lead you directly to this ship and will not let you progress until you take ownership of it. In fact, they even made it indestructible until you capture it so there is no chance for you to miss this one.

This DLC is connected to the main universe through six Jump Gates, and the moment you get close to any of these, a cutscene will play and the neighboring system will essentially be your "entry point" into Split territory as far as the plot is concerned.

For example, if you first approach the Jump Gate in Profit Center Alpha, the next few cutscenes of this plot will always play in this system and the one on the other side (in this case Two Grand), until eventually spawning the Cobra somewhere in Two Grand.

(Cradle of Humanity DLC) Terran Plot: Gladius / "Velvet Thunder"
This ship will only spawn after you progressed through the first segment of the Terran plot. Story Spoilers: This Gladius spawns right after the Yaki ambush in Getsu Fune, and just before the second, larger Xenon attack on the Solborn Outpost begins. You can claim the ship at any time afterwards.
