Deus Ex Story Mods

The Original Deus Ex has so many usermade campaigns and little mods. Here, I will showcase the mods I encourage every Deus Ex fan to play. I will provide a short overview of the mod, an install guide, and a rating, with a Top 10 at the end!

Vanilla Madder by WCCC is a newer mod that adds a lot of content (check on the modpage!), but the one we're looking at here is the campaign loader! If you install the mods below correctly (no need for shortcut creation with this), you'll be able to EASILY run each of them through the New Game option in Vanilla Madder!!

Note: Only certain mods will work, ones excluded are Burden of 80 Proof, Machine God, Terminus Machina, Revenge of the Sith, Invisible War Revised, Chasm, and The Nameless Mod (Use Revision). These have absolutely simple ways to install and play regardless (besides Chasm).

Overview: The Nameless Mod is the largest campaign mod for Deus Ex. It is quite unique, featuring a setting based around a Deus Ex forum, multiple brand new weapons, and fully voiced! It even gets updates to this day!

Installing & Playing: This is the easiest mod in this list to install. Simply have Deus Ex on steam, get Deus Ex Revision, follow this guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1774011024 and play!

Overview: Nihilum takes place three years before the events of Deus Ex, with you playing as the first Nano-aug, uncovering your own conspiracy. This mod features locations such as Germany, Russia, and even the White House. It has new weapons, and is fully voiced.

Install & Playing: Nihilum has it's own installer and desktop shortcut. Just simply run the installer, and play! https://www.moddb.com/mods/nihilum

Overview: You play as Paul Denton in a sidestory to Deus Ex. Taking place after JC has left Hong Kong, Paul uncovers his own conspiracy involving the CIA, The President, and aliens! It has no voice acting.

Install & Playing: Ok, so this is difficult for most people. There is an installer, run it. Afterwards, Create a shortcut of DeusEx.exe, Rightclick it and click on properties. Where it has the box called 'Target', Paste this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Deus Ex\System\DeusEx.exe" INI=Zodiac.ini USERINI=ZodiacUser.ini

(You may have to change the pathing if you installed steam elsewhere)

Open the shortcut, and click Play to start!

Rating: 9/10

Overview: Redsun takes place in Japan. Play as Joseph as he breaks out of a lab and takes down the gangs of Otamachi-Ku. This has no voice acting.

Note: The mod replaces the map dx.dx and titlemusic.umx, so either back those up or just don't extract them.

Install & Playing: Download the zip and unzip into the directories. Create a copy of DeusEx.exe, and rename it to Redsun2020.exe. It should now allow you to play.
If New Game just takes you to the vanilla game, Enable cheats (Press y or t, delete say, and type "set human bcheatsenabled true" without quotes, the type "legend" without quotes. Next, click on 'load map', then scroll down to 21_Intro1, and doubleclick it.)

Overview: 2027 takes place in, well, 2027. Play as Daniel, as he travels from Paris, to Russia, to Mount Weather in order to either join an AI or join the Omar. This mod features new weapons, hurt & death sounds, and ENB enhanced graphics. It has no voice acting. This mod now includes voice acting using AI as a separate download.

Install & Playing: It has it's own installer. Simply open it and run it from the desktop shortcut!

Overview: A sequel to Deus Ex following the Helios Ending. Play as Tiffany Savage and Adam Jensen as they combat the growing threat of Helios. Features a new artstyle, Human Revolution-esque conversations, advanced missions, and voice acting (Some AI voices, but some are temporary(?))

This is a work in progress mod, and development is actively on-going! ZeroPresence, mapper of The Nameless Mod 2.0, is mapping for the mod!

Overview: A short non-combat focused mod. Play as Peter, an office worker, as he scrambles to search for cash in order to buy supplies for a party. Try to complete every objective!

Overview: In the dystopian future of San Francisco, nobody is safe. Try to survive in the hardest mod for Deus Ex, featuring several new skills, a crafting system, and heavy leftist political commentary. Very janky and impossible to finish if you aren't obsessed with Deus Ex.
The mod creator has said before that this is like a large journalism project that "surprisingly keeps coming more and more true".

Overview: Taking place shortly after the events of Deus Ex, Gary Savage has tracked down a remnant of MJ12, and has tasked JC to destroy it. Mutations features new mutated versions of Grays, Greasels, and Karkians. It also includes dungeon crawler-esque maps and a mini-map. This has no voice acting.

Installing & Playing: This comes in a zip file with it's own exe, no need for shortcut editing!

Overview: Additional missions set after LaGuardia Airport, implementing an alternate storyline where JC Denton stays loyal to UNATCO despite his brother's warnings. This has no voice acting.

Overview: The so-called Meme Mod. Where quotes like "Paul, I thought you were a GEP Gun" and "We're 100% Black" comes from. Roam around Unatco HQ and a new Liberty Island map and interact with several characters from Deus Ex.

Installing & Playing: Simply unzip the contents, then open up 'legend' and open gotem.dx.

Overview: A Polish horror mod. You experience a train crash and fall into a chasm. There you encounter ghosts, vicious spiders, and OH GOD WHAT IS THAT?!?! Very Resident Evil-like.

There is a translation, but it doesn't cover everything and feels like it was run through google translate. The puzzles and general gameplay are very cryptic. Not even I have completed this mod, so if you're up to the challenge, try this out.

Installing & Playing: Unzip the contents, create a shortcut of DeusEx.exe, rightclick it, click properties, and paste this where 'target' is:

Rating: Now, since I haven't even completed it yet, I can't give a full rating, but since it's so confusing that I got stuck on the third map, it's a 4/10 for me.

Overview: A short parody of Human Revolution. Deleted a day after it's release for no apparent reason.

Installing & Playing: Download the zip on the right side, it should have it's own exe

Overview: This once lost mod is a re-imagining of the Deus Ex sequel, Invisible War. It takes place in a more grounded universe. This mod is pretty linear compared to other mods on this list. With the help of some fellow modders, we were able to restore and fix this mod to it's former glory! It features voice acting from it's creator.

Installing & Playing: Simply drag 'n drop the "IWR Community Update" folder into your Deus Ex folder! (NOT the "Invisible War Revised Community Update" folder both this text and that folder are in.) Navigate to \IWR Community Update\IW\System\IW.Exe. Run it!

Overview: Unfinished mod but still playable. Go through the base campaign as Anakin Skywalker. Many characters are changed to Star Wars characters, Star Wars music, you have force powers, and lightsabers. Includes two new endings.
