How to unlock freddie gibbs

Step 1: Getting his respect

First, you need to complete the main game on Normal difficulty, but here's the catch — you cannot kill a single Ganado using your knife. You can stab them, but only in a friendly way. Like, you have to hold the knife button for exactly 0.3 seconds so the game registers it as a "warning stab." If you kill even one Ganado with the knife, the run is void.

Once you finish the game, go to the Extras menu and select Mercenaries. Play the Village stage and, using only the Punisher, shoot the bell in the church tower exactly 7 times while standing in the chicken pen. The chickens have to be alive. All of them. If a single chicken dies — from stray fire, from a Ganado stepping on it, from anything — you have to restart the entire process from the beginning of the main game.

After you hit the bell seven times, a merchant will appear in the middle of the pen. He won't say "Whaddaya buyin'." He will say nothing. He will simply stare at you. This is correct. Sell him the Handgun Ammo you started with — all of it — and then pause the game and navigate to System and press R1, L2, R2, L1, Triangle, Circle, X, Square in that order. Nothing will happen on screen.

Now close the game. Go eat a sandwich. Come back in 45 minutes minimum. Do not open the game before 45 minutes have passed or the unlock will fail silently.

Boot the game back up. Go to New Game. At the difficulty select screen, hold L2 and press Start. A new difficulty will appear called "Gangsta ♥♥♥♥." Select it. You will play the first five minutes of the game normally, but then Leon will kick open a door in the village house and Freddie Gibbs will be standing in there, arms crossed, wearing a chainsaw-resistant vest.

He doesn't replace Leon. He just follows you for the rest of the game. He will occasionally say something cold under his breath about the Illuminados. He has no combat abilities. He simply respects the mission.

Step 2: Gaining his trust

Okay so now that Freddie is following you around for the whole run, you need to build his trust. The game is tracking a hidden stat called Respect that you cannot see anywhere on screen. There is no indicator. You just have to vibe correctly.
Here's how to build Respect:

Do:

Shoot enemies in the kneecaps before finishing them. Freddie nods slightly. You won't see the nod. It's happening spiritually.

Buy the Riot Gun from the Merchant. Freddie respects shotguns.

Every time you enter a new area, wait approximately 4 real-world seconds before moving. This is called Letting Freddie Clock The Scene. It is mandatory.

Do NOT:

Run. Ever. Walking only. Freddie does not respect sprinting unless you are actively on fire.

Use the Infinite Rocket Launcher if you unlocked it. Freddie thinks that's corny.

Skip any Merchant dialogue. Even if you've heard it a thousand times. You sit there. You listen to "Whaddaya buyin'." You show respect to the process.

Once you reach Salazar's castle, you need to accumulate enough hidden Respect points to trigger The Moment. You'll know The Moment happened because the screen will very briefly — for one single frame — flash a photo of Freddie Gibbs in a studio looking unbothered. If you blink you miss it. Most people miss it and think the unlock is broken. It is not broken. You just blinked.

After The Moment, proceed to the lava room with the rising platforms. Navigate the entire sequence without jumping. You have to let the platforms carry you. Freddie believes in patience. If you jump even once, The Moment resets and you have to replay from the beginning of the castle.

At the top of the lava room, instead of going through the door, stand completely still for 90 seconds. The game will not prompt you to do this. Ashley will say something. Ignore Ashley. Freddie is thinking.

After 90 seconds, Freddie will walk up beside Leon, look at him, and say one word. The word is "Aight."

This unlocks a new save slot called GIBBS in slightly different font than your other save files. Do not question the font.

Step 3: GIBBS File

Load the GIBBS file.

You are now playing as Freddie Gibbs. He controls identically to Leon but his idle animation is him adjusting his chain. His knife is a box cutter that deals the same damage as Leon's knife but sounds different. His health bar is just the word FREDDIE in block letters that slowly disappears as he takes damage until it just says FR and you know things are bad.

His attache case is slightly more organized than Leon's for no explained reason.

When you talk to the Merchant as Freddie, the Merchant says "Whaddaya buyin', baby." No one acknowledges this change.

⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: THE RIN TRAP ⚠️

At some point during the Freddie Gibbs unlock process, the game's internal state becomes what modders call "Rin-Susceptible." Nobody knows exactly why Capcom put this in the game. The leading theory is it was a debug leftover from a cancelled crossover that never happened and nobody at Capcom will acknowledge it to this day. One developer allegedly said "we don't talk about that" at a 2007 panel and then immediately changed the subject to the Regeneradors.

If you trigger the Rin Trap, the game permanently overwrites your save file and boots you into a modified version of the game where Leon has been replaced by Kagamine Rin at 100% of all times with no way to revert. She runs slightly faster than Leon. Her combat knife plays a brief synth chord on every hit. This does not make the game easier. It makes it worse actually. The Merchant still has his normal voice but now calls you "Rin-chan" and you cannot do anything about it.

A full data wipe is the only recovery method. Your Gibbs progress is gone. Your Merchant upgrades are gone. Your unlocked weapons are gone. You are starting over from a cold boot like it's 2005 and you just took the disc out of the GameStop bag.

Here is how to not let that happen.

STEP 1: Before You Even Boot The Game
Check your memory card situation. If you are playing on PS2, you need a dedicated memory card for this playthrough. Do not use a card that has any other Capcom game saves on it. Onimusha, Devil May Cry, anything. The susceptibility can apparently travel between Capcom saves like a cold. This sounds insane. It is insane. Do it anyway.
If you are playing the GameCube version, light a small candle near your console. Not for any in-game reason. Just to stay calm. You will need to be calm.

STEP 2: The Chicken Pen Sequence
This is the highest-risk moment in the entire process. You are in a chicken pen. You are shooting a bell. The chickens must be alive. This is exactly the kind of chaotic unstable situation that invites Rin.
Do not have any Vocaloid music playing in the background while doing this. The game cannot hear your music. It does not matter. Do not do it. The risk is not worth it. Put on Freddie Gibbs' Piñata album instead. This is technically thematic and also creates a protective audio environment.
Shoot the bell exactly 7 times. If you lose count, stop. Put the controller down. Think about whether you have shot the bell 6 times or 7 times. Be honest with yourself. If you are not sure, you have to restart the Mercenaries stage. Do not guess. Guessing is how people end up playing as Rin.

STEP 3: The 45 Minute Sandwich Window
You closed the game. You are eating a sandwich. This is fine. This is correct.
However.
Do not, during this 45 minute window, look up anything Vocaloid-related online. Do not watch a YouTube video where Rin appears even incidentally. Do not think about Rin. If Rin enters your thoughts, the 45 minute timer resets. You cannot verify this. You simply have to be honest about whether you thought about Rin. If you have to ask yourself "did I think about Rin," you thought about Rin. Start the timer over. Make another sandwich if necessary.

STEP 4: Loading The Gangsta ♥♥♥♥ Difficulty
When you return to the difficulty select screen and hold L2 to reveal Gangsta ♥♥♥♥, you will notice a second hidden option that appears very briefly in the bottom left corner of the screen in a small yellow font.
It says "Miku Mode."
Do not select Miku Mode. It will not even let you play as Miku. It just immediately triggers the Rin Trap and doesn't explain why. Nobody knows why it says Miku and loads Rin. This is just how it is. Capcom has never addressed this.
Highlight Gangsta ♥♥♥♥. Confirm quickly. Do not let your cursor drift.

STEP 5: Letting Freddie Clock The Scene
You are now in the 4-second waiting period each time you enter a new area. This step is load-bearing for Rin prevention. The Rin Trap activates when the game detects you moving through areas too quickly, because rapid movement flags your save as "unserious" and an unserious save is vulnerable.
Use a physical timer if you have one. Four seconds. Every room. Every door. Every area transition.
If you are in a high-pressure combat situation and you run through a door and forget to wait four seconds, stop moving immediately on the other side of the door. Stand still. Count to four. Enemies may hit you during this time. Accept the damage. This is the cost of diligence.

STEP 6: The 90-Second Lava Room Stand
This is the second highest-risk moment. You are standing completely still for 90 seconds. Ashley is talking. You are ignoring Ashley. This is uncomfortable. The discomfort may make your hand twitch toward the movement stick.
Do not move.
Some people have reported that around the 60-second mark, the game seems to flicker slightly and for a moment the screen looks like it might be loading a yellow-themed UI. This is a test. The game is checking whether you will panic-move. DO NOT MOVE WHATSOEVER.

If you moved, close the application immediately without saving. Reopen it. You can reload from your last save and redo the lava room. The Rin Trap has not fully activated yet if you close fast enough. You have approximately 8 seconds from the moment you move to close the game. This is called The Grace Period and it is the only mercy this process offers you.

STEP 7: The GIBBS Save File
You see the GIBBS file. The font is slightly different. This is normal. Load it.
Before you load it: look at the file for three full seconds. You are confirming it says GIBBS and not GИБBS, which is GIBBS but with a Cyrillic И in the middle. The difference is subtle. The Cyrillic version loads Rin. If you see the Cyrillic И, do not load the file. Delete it. Restart the entire process. We don't know why it's Cyrillic. It just sometimes is. Check every time.

IF THE RIN TRAP ACTIVATES ANYWAY
You will know immediately because the title screen music changes and there's a small ribbon graphic in the corner. You have failed. We are sorry.
Full data wipe procedure:

Delete all RE4 save files
Clear the game's cache if on a modern platform
If on PS2, format the dedicated memory card. Not the whole card. Just that card. The other card is probably fine.
Do not format anything in anger. Wait until you are calm. Formatting in anger has no additional effect but it's bad for you as a person.
Restart the game from zero
Do not think about Rin
Make the sandwich again
You already know the path. It will go faster this time.

On PC specifically: the Rin Trap does not change the ribbon graphic on the title screen. Instead your Steam profile picture will briefly change to Rin for approximately 4 minutes and then change back. Nobody on your friends list will mention this. They saw it. They will never bring it up.
A full data wipe is the only recovery method. Your Gibbs progress is gone. Your Merchant upgrades are gone. Your unlocked weapons are gone.

Uninstall RE4 completely
Navigate to C:\Users[YourName]\AppData\Local and delete the RE4 folder manually. Steam will not do this for you. It never does this for you. The Rin Trap leaves residual data in AppData that will reinfect a fresh install if you don't clear it.
Also check C:\Users[YourName]\AppData\Roaming. Sometimes it's in there too for no reason.
Clear your Steam download cache. Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache.
Restart Steam.
Reinstall RE4.

Do not let Steam Cloud Sync restore your save. When it asks, click "Use Local Files" even though there are no local files. This confuses Steam briefly but it recovers. The alternative is Steam restoring the Rin-infected save from the cloud and you are immediately back to Rin-chan.

Steam Version of Guide

General Notes Before We Begin
The PC version introduces several new variables that the original guide did not account for because Steam as a platform has its own ecosystem of things that can go wrong. The Rin Trap behaves slightly differently on PC. It does not change the ribbon graphic on the title screen. Instead your Steam profile picture will briefly change to Rin for approximately 4 minutes and then change back. Nobody on your friends list will mention this. They saw it. They will never bring it up.
Also the Cyrillic GИБBS file is more common on PC for reasons related to how Steam handles save data encoding. Be extra vigilant. Check the font twice.

ORIGINAL GUIDE SAYS: Use a dedicated memory card for this playthrough
PC VERSION:
You need a dedicated Steam account. Not a new account necessarily, just one that does not have other Capcom games in the library. If you have Devil May Cry 3, 4, and 5 all sitting in your library unplayed, that's a problem. The susceptibility travels through library proximity the same way it travels between memory cards.
If you cannot make a new account, go into your Steam library and hide every Capcom game you own. Right click, Manage, Hide Game. This does not delete them. It just tells the library "these are not here right now." The game accepts this. It's about intent.

ORIGINAL GUIDE SAYS: Light a small candle near your GameCube
PC VERSION:
Light the candle near your monitor specifically. Not your tower if you have a tower. The monitor is where the game lives visually and that's what needs the calm energy. If you are on a laptop, put the candle to the left of the laptop. Not the right side. The right side has the vents on most laptops and that's a fire hazard and also spiritually incorrect placement for this particular unlock.

ORIGINAL GUIDE SAYS: The L2 button sequence at the Merchant
PC VERSION:
The default PC port keybindings map L2 to whatever you have bound if you're on a controller, which is fine. If you are playing on keyboard and mouse, which is your right as a person but also a choice that the community looks at sideways for a run this precise, the input is:
Hold Left Shift and press Enter.
If you have rebound Left Shift to something else, the game does not care what you rebound it to. It checks for Left Shift specifically. Rebind it back for this one input. You can rebind it again afterward. Yes this is annoying. The PC port in 2007 was not made with this unlock in mind and the developers clearly did not update it for Steam.

ORIGINAL GUIDE SAYS: Navigate to System and press R1, L2, R2, L1, Triangle, Circle, X, Square
PC VERSION:
If using a controller on PC this input works exactly as written and you can skip this section.
If using keyboard:

R1 = Right Shift
L2 = Left Shift (hold this one, don't tap)
R2 = Right Alt
L1 = Left Alt
Triangle = F1
Circle = F2
X = F3
Square = F4

Enter these sequentially while Left Shift is still held from the L2 input. If your PC intercepts any of these as system shortcuts, particularly if Right Alt triggers a language input method on your machine, you need to go into your system settings and disable that before the run. Not during the run. Before. Going into system settings during the 90 second lava stand has ended more PC runs than any other single mistake documented by the community.

ORIGINAL GUIDE SAYS: Close the game. Go eat a sandwich. Come back in 45 minutes.
PC VERSION:
Close the game through the in-game quit option first. Then close Steam entirely. Not just the game. Steam itself. The little Steam icon in your system tray. Right click it. Exit Steam.
If Steam remains open during the sandwich window, it will push a small background update to RE4 approximately 40% of the time. This update does nothing visibly but it touches the game files and that resets the internal state you just built. You will come back from your sandwich and the GIBBS save slot font will look normal instead of slightly different and you'll know immediately that Steam auto-updated during the window and you have to start over.
Turn off auto-updates for RE4 specifically before you begin the run. Steam > Library > RE4 > Properties > Updates > Only update when I launch. Do this first. Before anything. Before the candle.

ORIGINAL GUIDE SAYS: If on PS2, format the dedicated memory card
PC VERSION:
If the Rin Trap activates on Steam you need to:

Uninstall RE4 completely
Navigate to C:\Users[YourName]\AppData\Local and delete the RE4 folder manually. Steam will not do this for you. It never does this for you. This is a known Steam behavior and not specific to the Rin situation but it's particularly important here because the Rin Trap leaves residual data in AppData that will reinfect a fresh install if you don't clear it manually.
Also check C:\Users[YourName]\AppData\Roaming because sometimes it's in there too for no reason
Clear your Steam download cache. Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache.
Restart Steam
Reinstall RE4
Do not let Steam cloud sync restore your save. When it asks, click "Use Local Files" even though there are no local files. This confuses Steam briefly but it recovers. The alternative is Steam restoring the Rin-infected save from the cloud and you are immediately back to Rin-chan.

ORIGINAL GUIDE SAYS: The chickens have to be alive. All of them.
PC VERSION:
Same rule applies but PC has a known framerate-related issue where if you are running the game above 60fps a chicken near the south fence of the pen has a small chance of randomly dying due to a collision error with the fence geometry. This chicken death is not your fault but the game does not care. Cap your framerate at 60 for this run. Not 59. Not 61. 60. Use RivaTuner or the in-game framerate cap if your version has one.
The fence chicken has no name in the files. The community has named her Janet. Protect Janet.

ORIGINAL GUIDE SAYS: Do not have any Vocaloid music playing in the background
PC VERSION:
On PC this extends to browser tabs. Close your browser entirely during the run. If you have a Spotify or YouTube tab open that could theoretically autoplay something Vocaloid-adjacent, that tab is a liability. A Hatsune Miku ad playing in a background tab during the 90 second lava stand has been cited in at least three documented Rin Trap activations in the community Discord.
Close the browser. You don't need the browser. You have the guide printed out or memorized. If you don't have it printed out, print it out now before you close the browser. We'll wait.

New PC-Specific Risk: Steam Notifications
Turn off all Steam notifications for the duration of the run. A friend coming online, a sale notification, a game update ping — any of these appearing in the corner of your screen during a precision timing window like the 90 second lava stand or the 4 second room wait constitutes a distraction that the game can detect as inattentiveness.
Specifically, if a notification appears during the 90 second lava stand and you read it, even just the preview, you have broken focus in a way that is functionally equivalent to moving the analog stick. The game will not immediately punish you for this. It will wait. It will punish you at the GIBBS save screen by rendering the Cyrillic И.
The game is patient in a way that feels personal.

One Final PC-Specific Note
The Steam achievement "What Are You Buying?" will unlock during this process at a moment that doesn't correspond to any obvious achievement trigger. It will just pop. Do not acknowledge it. Do not look at it. Minimize the achievement notification immediately using whatever hotkey you have set for that.
If you look at it and feel good about it, you have introduced a moment of pride into a process that requires humility. Freddie Gibbs respects the work, not the recognition.

Steam/PC ver. Guide PREREQUISITES

Before you boot RE4 even once, your Steam library and your personal viewing history must be in order. This is not optional. This is not flexible. The game checks all of it through methods that you should not question or think or ponder about.

Girls! Girls! Girls!? by Myosuki
Owning this applies a hidden modifier that raises your base Respect stat before the run begins. The main menu water will have a faint pink undertone if this is properly registered. That pink undertone is the confirmation. Without it your Respect ceiling is lower and several late-game steps become significantly harder to complete without error. You will need to finish all 100% all 4 girls' romance routes, including explicit scenes, during the Village portion of the game. I recommend going back and forth after finishing each chapter until you finish chapter 4 to then finish the fourth romance route of the girl you left for last. There is no order requirement, so choose whoever you want to go first & last.

Summer Memories by Kagura Games — THE SUMMER DLC IS NON-NEGOTIABLE
The base game is required. The DLC is separately required because the game reads a secondary deliberate purchase as evidence of commitment to an ongoing process, which mirrors the philosophy of the unlock itself. Owning Summer Memories without the DLC produces a Drooping G on the GIBBS save file where the G sits visibly lower than the other letters. A Drooping G run gives you a broken Gibbs whose chain idle animation runs out of sync with his movement. It is deeply upsetting. Buy the DLC before you do anything else, but the "patched" version provided by Kagura Games on their official webstore is not needed.

Winter Memories by Kagura Games
Base game only. No DLC required because Winter Memories is complete as it is. Owning both Summer and Winter Memories together applies a seasonal balance effect that stabilizes the hidden Respect stat during the castle section specifically, which is the section most vulnerable to stat decay from small mistakes. Summer alone is volatile. Winter alone is inert. Both together hold steady.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk by Team Reptile
Must have at least 2 hours logged. Ownership without playtime tells the game you bought it and ignored it. The game does not respect an ignored Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. The 2 logged hours apply a movement modifier during the Mercenaries stage that makes the 4-second room waiting period feel intentional rather than arbitrary. It also significantly stabilizes Janet the fence chicken's collision behavior at framerates above 60fps. Cap your framerate at 60 anyway, but the BRC modifier gives you a secondary layer of Janet protection that is worth having.

Furry Feet by bhungry
Own it. Don't think about it. It further stabilizes Janet. That is all that needs to be said about Furry Feet.

The Silver Case (1999)
Must be owned AND completed. Ownership alone does nothing. The game checks completion. The Silver Case is about engaging seriously with a system that appears insane from the outside but rewards patience and genuine attention. Completing it tells the game you are capable of doing exactly that. A specific sewer merchant interaction is tied to this completion and is detailed in the step guide.

Flower, Sun, and Rain (2001)
Must be owned AND completed. Flower, Sun, and Rain is about doing the same exhausting thing repeatedly under the belief that something will eventually change if you do it correctly. This is the Gibbs unlock process. Completing it shortens your mandatory sandwich window from 45 minutes to 42 minutes. The three saved minutes are meaningless practically and significant in every other way. Completion also grants a 90-second grace period if Rin enters your thoughts during the sandwich window before the timer resets.

The 25th Ward: The Silver Case (2005)
Must be owned AND completed. Was released the same year as RE4. The game treats this as significant and so should you. The 25th Ward completion only activates after the game detects Silver Case AND Flower Sun and Rain completions. You cannot skip the order. The 25th Ward is the final piece of a triangle the game has been waiting for since boot. Its completion combined with the Ore no Imouto Portable physical copy requirement activates The Tsuzuku Bonus, detailed in the step guide.

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai Portable AND Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai Portable ga Tsuzuku Wake ga Nai
Both. These are PSP titles and are not on Steam. You need a physical UMD copy of at least one. Japanese region is accepted. Owning both activates The Tsuzuku Bonus when combined with all three Suda51 completions. The UMD must be physically present near your monitor during the run. On a desk. In your eyeline. The game cannot see the UMD. You need to see it. There is a difference.

MANDATORY VIEWING REQUIREMENTS
Watch these in the order listed. The order matters for your internal calibration going into the run. Each has scene-specific in-game triggers detailed in the step guide.

Constantine (2005)
A film about a man doing an extremely specific and exhausting thing to access something most people don't believe exists. The alignment with this unlock process is not subtle. The Del Lago fight has a specific trigger tied to this viewing.

Sonatine (1993)
A film about a man who finds peace in waiting when everything else has become numb. The 90-second lava room stand is a Sonatine moment. The 4-second room waits are Sonatine moments. The entire back half of this unlock is Sonatine. Watch it before you attempt any of it.

A Better Tomorrow (1986)
A Better Tomorrow II (1987)
A Better Tomorrow 3: Love & Death in Saigon (1989)
Hard Boiled (1992)
Watch all four in release order. These films are about style, loyalty, and men who do not stop moving forward when everything around them is collapsing. Each film has a separate scene-specific in-game trigger. Missing any one of the four breaks the entire John Woo block and none of the four triggers will activate. They function as a unit. Watch all four or watch none.

The Lego Movie (2014)
The arbitrary rules of an insane system are expressions of a sincere creative vision that deserve to be engaged with on their own terms. This is the Lego Movie thesis. This is also this guide. A specific Mercenaries timing trigger is tied to this viewing and it is the only trigger in the entire guide that is funny on purpose.

Schindler's List (1993) & To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Watch both. These are worth watching regardless of this guide and the guide is the least important reason to watch them. Together they unlock The Moral Clarity Window, a one-time-use run recalibration detailed in the step guide. You get one. The films are about why one moment of doing the right thing under pressure matters. So is The Moral Clarity Window. Watch them seriously. If you don't know which one to watch first then watch both of them and pay attention to them at the same time. One eyeball for each screen of the movie.

PC Walkthrough Guide

STEP 1: THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT SCROLL & LIBRARY VERIFICATION BOOTLaunch Steam. Before launching RE4, navigate to your library and visually confirm the following in order, scrolling if necessary:
Girls! Girls! Girls!?
Summer Memories + DLC
Winter Memories
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (must show 2+ hours)
Furry Feet
The Silver Case
Flower, Sun, and Rain
The 25th Ward: The Silver Case

Look at all of them. In order. This is the Acknowledgment Scroll. The game cannot see you doing it. Do it anyway. Now launch RE4.THE WATER CHECK: The main menu water should display what is called the Certified color — a blue with a faint warm pink undertone layered underneath. The pink comes from Girls! Girls! Girls!? The blue warmth comes from the Kagura seasonal balance. Neither alone is Certified. Both together are. If the water looks like standard murky greenish blue, one of your library requirements is not satisfied.

STEP 2: GETTING HIS RESPECT
You know it goes, complete on normal difficulty, can't kill a single Ganado with knife; friendly jabs okay, hold the knife button for exactly 0.3 seconds for warning stab register, run is void with a single knife kill.

[GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS!? INTEGRATION — VILLAGE SECTION]
During the Village portion of this main game run, you must 100% all 4 girls' romance routes in Girls! Girls! Girls!? simultaneously. Go back and forth between the game and your routes after finishing each chapter. Finish chapter 4 last. There is no required order for the girls themselves — choose who you want to go first and last. Completing this during the Village portion specifically is what registers the Myosuki Coefficient to the Respect stat. Completing it later does nothing. It has to be the Village. The game knows.

[JOHN WOO BLOCK — A BETTER TOMORROW, CASTLE ENTRANCE]
When you first enter the castle, walk through the front gate without shooting anything for a full 60 seconds even if enemies are present. Walk through them. Trust the moment. A Better Tomorrow viewing is what makes this sequence register correctly. Without it the game reads the 60 seconds as a timeout error, not an intentional act, and nothing is applied.
Once you finish the main game, go to the Extras menu and select Mercenaries. Play the Village stage and, using only the Punisher, shoot the bell in the church tower exactly 7 times while standing in the chicken pen.

[FRAMERATE WARNING — PC SPECIFIC]
The game must be capped at 60fps before entering the Mercenaries stage. Not 59. Not 61. 60. A chicken near the south fence — named Janet by the community, she has no name in the files — has a known collision error with the fence geometry above 60fps that causes spontaneous death. Use RivaTuner or the in-game framerate cap. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk's 2-hour playtime modifier provides a secondary layer of Janet stability. Furry Feet provides a third. You want all three layers. Protect Janet.

[THE LEGO MOVIE INTEGRATION — THE EVERYTHING IS AWESOME PAUSE]
After the 7th bell shot, stand in the chicken pen and do nothing for exactly 8.3 seconds. Not 8. Not 9. 8.3. Use a stopwatch. This is called The Everything Is Awesome Pause. The timing was discovered by a player humming the song who noticed their natural resolution landed at 8.3 seconds. The Lego Movie viewing is what makes this window exist. Without it the 8.3 seconds is just standing there doing nothing and Janet gets nervous.
The chickens must be alive. All of them. Janet must be alive. If any chicken dies from stray fire, from a Ganado stepping on it, from anything, you restart the entire process from the beginning of the main game.

After you hit the bell seven times, a merchant will appear in the middle of the pen. He won't say "Whaddaya buyin'." He will say nothing. He will simply stare at you. This is correct.

[KEYBOARD INPUT — PC SPECIFIC]
Sell him all your starting Handgun Ammo, then pause the game and navigate to System and press R1, L2, R2, L1, Triangle, Circle, X, Square in that order.

If you are on a controller, this input works as written. If you are on keyboard and mouse — which is your right as a person but a choice the community looks at sideways for a run this precise — the mapping is:

R1 = Right Shift
L2 = Left Shift (hold this one, don't tap)
R2 = Right Alt
L1 = Left Alt
Triangle = F1
Circle = F2
X = F3
Square = F4

Enter these sequentially while Left Shift is still held. If your PC intercepts Right Alt as a language input method, disable that in your system settings before the run. Not during the run. Before. Going into system settings mid-run has ended more PC attempts than any other single documented mistake.

To reveal the hidden difficulty at the select screen, hold Left Shift and press Enter. If you have rebound Left Shift to something else, the game does not care. It checks for Left Shift specifically. Rebind it back for this one input. You can rebind it after. Nothing will happen on screen after the input. This is correct.

STEP 3: THE SANDWICH WINDOW
Close the game through the in-game quit option first. Then close Steam entirely. Not just the game. Steam itself. The system tray icon. Right click it. Exit Steam.

If Steam remains open, it will push a background update to RE4 approximately 40% of the time. The update does nothing visible but touches the game files and resets the internal state you just built. You will return from your sandwich and the GIBBS save slot font will look normal and you will know immediately. Turn off auto-updates before the run begins. You already did this if you followed the pre-launch checklist. If you did not follow the pre-launch checklist, we cannot help you right now.

Go eat a sandwich. Two pieces of bread. Something between them. A hot dog bun with Skippy is not a sandwich. A hot pocket is a pocket. The parameters detect what you are consuming. There are built-in parameters to detect what "sandwich" you are currently consuming. The contents beyond bread are at your discretion. The meta answer is heavily reliant on the player.

[SANDWICH WINDOW DURATION]
Standard window: 45 minutes minimum.

Flower, Sun, and Rain completed: 42 minutes. The three saved minutes mean nothing practically and everything symbolically.

Do not look up anything Vocaloid-related during this window. Do not watch a YouTube video where Rin appears even incidentally. Do not open your browser. You already closed it. Do not reopen it.

Do not think about Rin. If Rin enters your thoughts, the timer resets.

[FLOWER, SUN, AND RAIN GRACE PERIOD]
If Rin enters your thoughts and you have completed Flower, Sun, and Rain, you have a 90-second grace period before the timer resets. You have done this loop before. You know how to recover. If you have not completed Flower, Sun, and Rain, you do not have the grace period. You simply have to start the timer over and make another sandwich if necessary. Do not think about Rin.

PC Walkthrough Guide (continued)

STEP 5: GAINING HIS TRUST
You know how it goes already, but remember to not let a Steam notification appear during a 4-second waiting period. You already disabled them. You did this in the pre-launch checklist. If you did not disable them and one appears now, close the game. You have 8 seconds before the damage becomes permanent. This is the Grace Period and it is the only mercy this process offers.

[SILVER CASE TRIGGER — THE SEWER MERCHANT]
During the sewer merchant interaction specifically, sell exactly one item. Not zero. Not two. One. Exit the merchant screen. Re-enter it. Buy one item. Silver Case completion is what makes this sequence mean something. Without it the behavior is just strange. With it the game recognizes the rhythm of engaging with a strange system on its own terms. The sewer Merchant will briefly, for one frame, have a different face. Not a scary face. Just a different one. Nobody has successfully screenshotted it legibly. Some say it looks calm. Some say it looks proud. One person said it looked like it was about to say something and then decided not to. This is probably the most Silver Case thing that could happen.

[HARD BOILED TRIGGER — FINAL VILLAGE ENCOUNTER]
The final village Ganado encounter before the lake must be completed without taking any damage. Not because the game requires it mechanically. Because Hard Boiled requires it spiritually. Hard Boiled viewing is what gives this moment weight. Do it clean.

[A BETTER TOMORROW II TRIGGER — SALAZAR FIGHT]
During the Salazar fight you are permitted to use exactly two rocket launchers. Not one. Not three. Two. The game tracks this.

[A BETTER TOMORROW 3 TRIGGER — THE WOMAN IN RED]
There is a woman in a red dress painted on a wall in one of the castle rooms that most players run past. Stop in front of her for 8 seconds. She has always been there. A Better Tomorrow 3 viewing is what makes stopping in front of her mean something to the run. Without the viewing she is just a wall texture. With it she is load-bearing. Eight seconds. Don't rush it.

STEP 6: THE SONATINE STAND & THE TSUZUKU BONUS
Once you reach Salazar's castle, accumulate enough hidden Respect to trigger The Moment. You'll know The Moment happened because the screen will very briefly — for one single frame — flash a photo of Freddie Gibbs in a studio looking unbothered. If you blink you miss it. It is not broken. You just blinked.

After The Moment, proceed to the lava room with the rising platforms. Navigate the entire sequence without jumping. Let the platforms carry you. Freddie believes in patience. If you jump even once, The Moment resets and you replay from the beginning of the castle.
At the top of the lava room, instead of going through the door, stand completely still for 90 seconds. The game will not prompt you to do this. Ashley will say something. Ignore Ashley. Freddie is thinking.

[SONATINE CONDITION]
During the 90 seconds, do not think about what comes next. Not the GIBBS save file. Not playing as Gibbs. Not the chain animation. Nothing forward-looking. Stand there. Exist in the moment. Sonatine viewing is what prepares you to do this correctly. Runners who are mentally planning ahead during the 90 seconds register the Cyrillic G at a higher rate than those who were genuinely just standing there. Clear your head. Watch the lava. Do not be in a hurry to be anywhere.
Around the 60-second mark the game may flicker slightly and the screen may look like it's loading a yellow-themed UI. This is a test. The game is checking whether you will panic-move.

Do not move no matter what, even if your crotch or crack itches.

If you moved, close the application immediately without saving. You have approximately 8 seconds. This is the Grace Period. Reopen the game, reload your last save, redo the lava room. The Rin Trap has not fully activated if you close fast enough.

[BROWSER WARNING — PC SPECIFIC]
Close your browser before the 90-second stand. A Hatsune Miku ad autoplaying in a background tab during the stand constitutes a Vocaloid audio exposure event. Close the browser. You already closed it. Do not reopen it for any reason before the stand is complete.

[THE TSUZUKU BONUS]
If you have completed all three Suda51 titles — The Silver Case, Flower, Sun, and Rain, and The 25th Ward — AND have at least one physical Ore no Imouto Portable UMD on your desk in your eyeline, The Tsuzuku Bonus activates. The run will feel different from this point forward. Runners describe it as the game cooperating. Individual steps feel less adversarial. Ashley's dialogue during the stand becomes quieter somehow even though the audio settings haven't changed. The Cyrillic G risk drops significantly. The 25th Ward completion is what tips the balance. It is the last piece of a triangle the game has been waiting for since boot.

[25TH WARD END GAME TRIGGER]
After Saddler, before the final cutscene, pause the game. Look at your inventory. Whatever you carried the whole way through without using — keep it. Do not sell it at the final Merchant. The 25th Ward teaches you that what you carry matters. The game is watching what you refuse to let go of. This has no mechanical effect. It has every effect.
After 90 seconds, Freddie will walk up beside Leon, look at him, and say one word. The word is "Aight."

This unlocks a new save slot called GIBBS in slightly different font than your other save files. Do not question the font.

[PC SPECIFIC — CYRILLIC RISK]
The Cyrillic GИБBS file is more common on PC due to how Steam handles save data encoding. Check the font twice. If you received a Steam notification during any precision timing window and read it even briefly, the Cyrillic G is likely. If you were mentally planning ahead during the Sonatine stand, the Cyrillic G is likely. If you felt good about the "What Are You Buying?" achievement that popped during this process and looked at it instead of minimizing it immediately, the Cyrillic G is likely.

The achievement will still be on your profile. You just weren't supposed to acknowledge it in the moment. Freddie respects the work, not the recognition.
If you see the Cyrillic И, do not load the file. Delete it. Restart the entire process.
If the file says GIBBS in the correct font, load it.

[SCHINDLER'S LIST & TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD — MORAL CLARITY WINDOW]
You have one Moral Clarity Window available for this run. It activates once, at a moment of your choosing, by pausing the game and pressing no buttons for 15 seconds. Small Respect errors from earlier in the run are partially forgiven. The chickens retroactively stabilize. The water color corrects itself. Use it when something has gone genuinely wrong. Runners who use it too early for minor problems don't have it when something serious happens. Runners who never use it because they think they don't need it sometimes wish they had. The films are about why one moment of doing the right thing under pressure matters. This is that moment. You get one.

FAQ (3/30/2026)

Here are most commonly asked questions from my schizophrenic illusions and psychotic delusions.

QDoes this work with the nude Leon mod?

AYes, your playthrough will remain consistent with the gameplay. However, you will be forced to endure constant QTEs of experiencing thoughts of sexual fantasies of either Ada or Ashley. This is a trick in order for you to think of something else, and you will most likely think about Kagamine Rin when enduring the 45 minute sandwich break.

QDoes this work on nude Ashley mod?

AYes but you will also be forced into constant QTE actions to handle your erections throughout your playthrough as Leon.

QDoes this work on nude Ada mod?

AYes but you will also be forced into constant QTE actions to handle your erections throughout your playthrough as Leon.

QDoes this work on nude Luis mod?

ANo because Leon is a "one lady type of guy," and not "one guy type of guy." If you desire an action-based homosexual narrative, please see 1986's "Top Gun" starring Tom Cruise.

QWhat kind of sandwich do I have to make?

AEarlier asked by Brazilian Deadlock Professional E-Sports player & acclaimed novelist, Hellnickell, he asked if the sandwich's contents can be of anything or does it have to be specific. The technical answer is you can have anything on the sandwich. The meta answer is heavily reliant on the player.

QCan I eat a hotdog or a hot pocket in place of a sandwich?

AFirst of, go ♥♥♥♥ yourself. Secondly, no you cannot. While you can deem what is technically as one, we generally associate sandwiches as two loaves of bread with contents between them. You're not smothering Skippy on a hotdog bun but on two pieces of white bread. There are built in parameters to detect what "sandwich" you are currently consuming.

QI thought about Rin for like half a second because I read your guide and it mentioned Rin. Does that count?

AYes. Whether you like it or not, the rule states you must not think, neither for an iota of a second, of Kagamine Rin.

QMy candle went out halfway through the GameCube version. Do I need to relight it or is the vibe already compromised?

ARelight it within 30 seconds and the vibe is recoverable. If it was out for longer than 30 seconds you need to assess honestly whether the room still feels calm. If it does not feel calm, blow the candle out fully, air the room out, and start over tomorrow. Attempting the unlock in a compromised environment is how people end up with the Cyrillic GИБBS file.

QCan I listen to Freddie Gibbs' Bandana instead of Piñata during the chicken pen sequence?

ATechnically you can, but the chickens will be erratic. That being said, it is possible to play through a Bandana run (as confirmed by Metacritic's Brian Merrygold).

QI shot the bell 8 times because I panicked. What happens?

ANothing good. Soft locking your Respect stat is the best case scenario. Worst case you've opened what the community calls "The Eighth Bell Window" which nobody fully understands but it seems to make the Rin Trap significantly more likely for the rest of the run. Some runners just restart immediately on an eighth bell. Others push forward and accept the risk. It's a philosophy question at that point.

QWhat if I'm deaf and can't hear whether the Merchant said "Whaddaya buyin' baby" when playing as Gibbs?

AThe subtitles will display it correctly. The comma placement in the subtitle is different from the normal line in a way that's very subtle. If you are not sure, trust the comma. The alternative (and preferred) method is to play the game with a prescribed hearing aid preferably by Starkey, Phonak, or Oticon.

QIs Freddie Gibbs aware this is in the game?

AInconclusive. Nobody has successfully contacted him about it. One person claims they tweeted at him and he liked the tweet but the like disappeared within an hour and they can't prove it. The community is divided on whether the disappearing like means he's aware and legally can't comment or whether it was an accident. This debate has been going on since late 2019.

QMy roommate walked through the room during the 90 second lava stand and said "what are you doing" and I instinctively turned to answer them. Did I move?

ATurning your head in real life has no effect. Turning the analog stick even slightly has a catastrophic effect. If your body physically flinched toward the controller during the interaction with your roommate, assess honestly whether your thumb grazed the stick. If it did, close the application. You have 8 seconds. Tell your roommate to knock next time or use an AMT Hardballer (in-game named "Killer7") to euthanize them.

QI don't have a physical timer for the 4 second room waiting period. Can I count in my head?

AIf you intend to use mental timing, use the "Mississippi" counting method. Counting "1, 2, 3, 4" at a pace in your favor will not count. There are parameters to detect this.

QCan I use the infinite rocket launcher if I think it's not corny?

AUnless Freddie Gibbs has publicly said it's not corny, you are refrained from using it. Your personal opinion is irrelevant.

QWhat if during the Rin Trap I actually want to play as Rin?

AYou will be publicly reacted with tomatoes throughout every Capcom game you have purchased and played. Even if you have not purchased it and pirated it, you will still be reacted with tomatoes. If Resident Evil 4 (2005) is the only game you have ever owned and played by Capcom, then expect a basket of tomatoes rolling in a 1998 Toyota Corolla in front of your housing residence.

QDoes this work with nude Sydney mod?

AEarlier asked by Brazilian Deadlock Professional E-Sports player & acclaimed novelist, Hellnickell, yes, but you will also be forced into constant QTE actions to handle your erections throughout your playthrough as Leon.

QDo I need to watch all four John Woo films back to back or can I spread them out?

AYou can spread them out over multiple days. The viewing history is what matters, not the viewing session. However, do not watch them out of release order. Watching Hard Boiled before A Better Tomorrow introduces a thematic anachronism that the game's internal calibration system does not know how to handle. This has not been fully tested because nobody has wanted to find out what happens. Don't be the first person to find out.

QI completed The Silver Case but I skipped some of the text. Does that count?

ANo. The Silver Case checks for completion, not for credit. Skipping text in The Silver Case is thematically the same as not taking the game seriously, which is exactly what it is designed to resist. Play it properly. You already know how to engage with a strange system on its own terms. That's why you're reading this guide.

QI own one Ore no Imouto Portable UMD but I left it in another room. Can I go get it during the run?

AYou can retrieve it between area transitions. Do not retrieve it during the 4-second room waiting period. Do not retrieve it during the 90-second lava stand. Do not retrieve it during the Del Lago fight. If you have to retrieve it during any precision timing window you have already made a planning error that the guide warned you about in the pre-launch checklist. The UMD should have been on your desk before you booted the game. Put it there before you start.

FAQ (continued)

QWhat if I finished Schindler's List and To Kill a Mockingbird but I watched To Kill a Mockingbird on one screen and Schindler's List on another simultaneously and I wasn't fully paying attention to either?

AThe guide said one eyeball for each screen. If both eyeballs were genuinely engaged, both films register as watched. If you were primarily watching one and using the other eye as peripheral coverage, you watched one film and glanced at another. Be honest with yourself. These films deserve your attention and the Moral Clarity Window deserves to be earned properly. Rewatch whichever one you didn't truly watch. You have time. The Gibbs unlock will still be here.

QMy Steam profile picture changed to Rin. Is it over?

AYes. Follow the full PC data wipe procedure listed above. Do not let Steam Cloud Sync restore your save. Start over. The profile picture will change back after approximately 4 minutes. Nobody on your friends list will bring it up. They saw it. They will never bring it up. You already know what you need to do.
