(1.47) Best Trailer Configurations and Cargoes

See below for pros and cons of owning a trailer (under General Tips), and the key to abbreviations. My life circumstances have changed and I don't have much time to maintain this guide now, sorry for lack of updates!

Note: Though I consider the guide complete enough to remove the WIP tag, some trailers are missing real-life usage details, and some formatting details are inconsistent. Nonetheless, basic function data is available for all trailers in the game.

Tips:

• Capacity restrictions are not shown when the heaviest cargo isn't limited by the restriction.
  
• Capacity restrictions are the difference between a state group's weight limit, and the weight of the truck plus the weight of the trailer. For all such calculations shown in this guide, the weight of the truck is a 20,400 lbs Volvo VNL Long 6x4.
  
• $/mi values were determined at Level 55 using jobs between 80 to 250 mi and no just-in-time delivery.
  
• 'Excellent $/mi' is usually the best-paying cargo for a given trailer, though not always. It is always close to the best-paying cargo.
  
  
• Avoid TPD 6a configurations when possible. The extra axle only hurts capacity.
  
  
• Normal vs. Double PUP, Steerable vs. Fixed axles, and other chassis and body variants usually don't affect weight. The only exception is Sliding Tarps, which turn Dropdecks and Flatbeds into a completely different class of trailer.
  
  
• Truck weight contributes toward weight restrictions, so daycabs and 4x2 configurations will allow you to carry a little more (especially with Freightliner Cascadia, Mack Anthem, and Western Star 57X models). However, if you're going to be transporting large doubles, driving on forestry roads, or playing in Convoys, I would not recommend going below a 6x4 chassis; You will need the extra driven axle if you (or someone else) get stuck.

In the game, Grain Hoppers are better because they also carry Sugar Beet.

If you're aiming for realism, Bulk Feed tanks are the best way to transport Cotton Seed, Grain, and Pelleted Animal Food to farms. It is not realistic to use them to transport grain from farms.

In real life, Bulk Feed tanks are similar to a grain hopper, but have an auger for directly loading silos or other farm machinery (that's what the pipe on the back and along the left side is for). This concept is shared with seed tenders, chaser bins, and even combine harvesters! They also have an auger running along the bottom to maximize capacity.

These tanks are used to transport highly corrosive materials. They require HazMat 6 or HazMat 8 to use (HazMat 6 loads are more common). They pay decently well, though aren't very good for exploration, with most loads being between farms or refineries.

In real life, they're classified DOT 412/MC-312 tankers. Their key feature is their inner lining, usually made of butyl rubber (also used in inner tubes and inner tire linings), allowing them to safely transport strong corrosives. They also tend to have noticeable rings on the outside of the tank. As they are a type of tanker trailer, they must be washed after every load, to prevent contamination.

Tip: D-Shaped and Deep Drop styles are functionally identical--They have the same weight and capacity.

Tip: None of the cargoes currently available for this trailer are dense enough to be weight restricted in AZ, CA, or TX for any configuration.

Tip: If you haven't unlocked the skills for this trailer, get HazMat 6 first; This allows you to transport Pesticides, which are the most common cargo for this trailer.

Doesn't require skills to transport any of its cargoes. It's not very profitable, but is perhaps the best for exploration in its category.

These trailers are box trailers specialized to transport low-density bulk products, particularly forestry byproducts such as wood shavings. They can have tarps, instead of solid roofs, for over-loading. Vans with moving floors can unload themselves, while those without moving floors are unloaded by tipping platforms (like a tipper, but the mechanism is external to the trailer).

Moving Floor vans are slightly heavier, but this doesn't cause any substantial difference.
For all 3a variations except Belly, only 1 cargo, Cotton Seed, benefits.

These trailers are used for transporting intermodal containers, design to be easily transferred between ships, trucks, and trains. In reality, flatbeds and dropdecks are also commonly used to transport containers.

Tip: More axles never benefit this trailer type.

Note: The 'Extendable' variant can be switched between 32' and 40' in the F7 menu. The 48' only has the capacity of a 32' with the rest taken up by an unloading ramp.

Used to transport powdery bulk goods, such as cement. They don't pay very well, but are good for exploration as they can deliver to/from a wide range of depots.

These trailers look similar to hoppers, but they are more rounded and unload via a system of pneumatic tubes (i.e. forcing air through), in addition to gravity. In real life, they're primarily used to transport dry cement, but these funnel tankers in particular can efficiently transport powders and even granular materials!

Dry Van is the best for transporting what cargoes it can. It can transport many of the best-paying cargoes, including the absolute best, Dynamite. For more information, see Detailed Comparison -- Box Trailers near the bottom of the guide.

Tip: 2x and 3x (except where TPD is available) are best for most of the cargo types a dry van can carry, as most cargoes--including 9 of the top 14 highest-paying ones--have a density similar to or lower than Dynamite. Those marked Bulk are best transported in 53' and RMD, respectively.

Tip: Using more axles is not necessary. It does maximize capacity, but the only cargo which benefits is Pelleted Animal Food, which pays poorly and probably isn't something you'd be transporting very often. The only exception is a 53' 3a will also carry a little more Flour and Soda Ash.

Food Tanks are used for bulk transport of liquids that are or will be safe to drink, which currently includes 3 cargoes, ranked according to best-paying:

In real life, these trailers are classified as DO 407/MC-307. They have stainless steel construction, allowing them to safely carry edibles, and carry mild acids. They technically can be used for fuels. Being a tank trailer, they must be washed after every load.

Tip: All 5 cargoes carried using fuel tanks require the HazMat 3 skill. Gasoline is usually the best-paying cargo, but this varies more heavily on configuration than for most trailers. Crude Oil is the lowest-paying cargo.

In real life, these are classified as DOT 406/MC-306 tankers. They are constructed of aluminum. Being a type of tank, they must be washed after every load, to prevent contamination.

Added in 1.47, these trailers require HazMat 2 to use, but pay extremely well--even the shortest trailer gets over $100/mi on some baseline loads! They aren't very good for exploration, as they're limited to chemical plants and rail yards.

These trailers are also known as DOT 331/MC-331. They're used to transport gasses that liquefy under high pressures, between 100-500 psi, and are usually painted white to minimize solar heating effects.


They currently support 5 cargoes:

• AA: Anhydrous Ammonia (HazMat 2)
  
• Chlorine (HazMat 2)
  
• Ethane (HazMat 2)
  
• Propane (HazMat 2)
  
• LPG (HazMat 2)

AA is always the best-paying cargo. The ranking of the other cargoes varies by configuration.


The default 43' configuration tends to be the least profitable overall due to restrictions, despite carrying a little more Ethane, Propane, and LPG. 32' is better for AA and Chlorine.

The trailer purchase prices listed below are the minimum prices. To attain these, downgrade the side marker lamps and taillights to the least expensive item available

Best for: Cotton Seed, Pelleted Animal Food, and Sugar Beet.

Good for: Grain; however, Dry Van carries more.
Bad for: Potatoes; Use Container Carrier or Dry Van to get triple the $/mi for the same weight!

Dry Van cannot carry Sugar Beet or Cotton Seed.
Bulk Feed and Dry Bulk have similar capacities but cannot carry Potatoes or Sugar Beet.

Lode King DLC: Distinction -- The only difference between steel and aluminum chassis, of the same size, is aluminum costs slightly more. Otherwise, they have the same weight and capacity.

Insulated trailers are not very practical; Dry Van has more capacity for what it can carry, and Reefer can carry an even wider variety of cargoes. The only case where Insulated might be practical is when you want to transport fruit or vegetables, but can't afford a Reefer. The best configuration for this trailer is Belly 2-axle. There is only one cargo: Livestock. It is not very good for exploration, being limited to Bushnell Farms, Rail Export, cattle auctions, and similar industries. It is not affected by state weight restrictions.

In real life, these trailers are used to transport just about any farm animal. Transport is no longer done via trains. Animals can only be kept in the trailer for so long before they must be unloaded to feed and rest. How often the stops are depends on the species and status of the animals being transported.

All configurations for this trailer have the same weight and capacity. No cargoes are affected by state weight restrictions.

This is the only trailer capable of carrying Logs. They can also carry Large Tubes, Lumber, and Utility Poles, but even a 45' flatbed carries more of those. Sorted by best-paying, the available cargoes are as follows:

Specific cargo pay comparison

Lowboys are generally considered the best trailer in the game. This is because they can haul their best-paying cargoes anywhere, as unlike all the other trailers, lowboy's cargo options are almost never affected by weight restrictions.

The best-paying cargo is Space Container at $121.10, and can be carried with any configuration.

Convoys Tip: Be careful when using 2x 4a 0-3-1 and 2x 3a variants in Convoys. The 1-axle stingers can appear to wobble badly at highway speeds to other players, due to latency.

DLC Tip: There are 17 cargoes for Lowboys in the base game. Heavy Cargo DLC adds 9 more, and Forestry DLC and Volvo DLC add 6 more each. You should have Heavy Cargo DLC if you're using Lowboys (fortunately this is included in several bundles). Forestry and Volvo DLCs are comparatively optional.

Reefers carry less than Dry Vans, but can carry 12 more cargoes they can't carry (including Fruits, and Vegetables, which can also be carried in Insulated trailers). For more information, see Detailed Comparison -- Box Trailers near the bottom of the guide.

Reefer trailers are box trailers lined with insulation, and equipped with a refrigeration unit at the front of the trailer. A green light on the front left corner of the trailer tells the driver the reefer is still running. In real life, the reefer unit runs on its own generator and requires its own fuel. It is more expensive for carriers to run reefers due to maintenance and fuel for the reefer unit.


Tip: Like Dry Van, 2x, 3x, and TPD variants of Reefer carry the most of any cargoes not listed as 'Bulk' in the list below, making them better overall if you want the most $/mi. However, Reefer doubles are rare in real life, so stick to 53' if you prefer realism.

Tip: More axles is not necessary for this trailer type, as this only benefits one cargo: Pelleted Animal Food. This cargo doesn't pay well, is not something you'd transport regularly, and is better transported in Dry Vans, anyways.

Fun Fact: In the vanilla game, a Reefer 3x is the most expensive trailer you can buy at $266,540k.

Avoid 32' 2a, 45' 3a, 48' 3a, 53' 4a, and B2x 5a configurations; None of these increase the amount of cargo you can carry versus the same lengths with fewer axles.

Dropdeck sliding tarps are no different than flatbed sliding tarps.

Container Carriers: In AZ, CA, and TX, a 53' Container Carrier is more effective than a 53' Dry Van for carrying Beverages, Dry Milk, Flour, Lemonade, Nitrocellulose, Potassium, Potatoes, Salt, Soda Ash, Sugar. In NM, they're still better for carrying Flour and Soda Ash.

Dry Van: Generally carries the most of what it can carry, with a few exceptions that are mentioned above.

Insulated: Not very practical. Dry Van has more capacity for what it can carry, and Reefer can carry an even wider variety of cargoes. The only case where Insulated might be practical is when you want to transport fruit or vegetables, but can't afford a Reefer.

Reefer: Carries less than Dry Van, but can carry 12 more cargoes they can't carry (including Fruits, and Vegetables, which can also be carried in Insulated trailers).

Sliding Tarps: Can't carry several of the best cargoes for Dry Vans (the first they can carry is Fertilizer and Furniture). Otherwise, the two have about the same capacity and weight (specifically, 28', 32', 53' 4-axle, 2x, B2x, and 3x are slightly lighter than Dry Van equivalents; all other configurations are slightly heavier). Sliding Tarps uniquely carry 5 industrial cargoes (Gypsum, Mortar, Paint, Sawdust Panels, and Silica), but these are all mid-pay. Both Flatbed and Drop-deck styles have the same capacities and weights.

Capacity by Configuration

Best Capacity by State

End, Live Floor, and Side Dumper are different body types for the same trailer style. Unlike most trailers, however, the body differences do affect weight and capacity, slightly!

• Live Floor Dumpers aren't practical, due to slightly lower capacity.
  
• End Dumpers have the lowest price for a given capacity, but they weigh slightly more.
  
• Side Dumpers have the highest price for a given capacity, but are also much lighter, making them the better investment when weight restrictions are a concern!

Bottom Dumper is a separate trailer style. Horizontal and Vertical variants are purely cosmetic. They are much heavier for a given capacity, but carry the most of any dumper when weight restrictions aren't a problem, and are (probably) more stable at highway speeds.


Real-life
In real life, Bottom Dumpers (also known as Clam or Belly Dumpers) spread aggregates in a low, even line, rather than a large heap like a tipper would. This is especially useful for tasks such as paving roads. They differ from hoppers in that their unloading area is much larger. While they're extremely stable, they can't effectively unload aggregates larger than 1 ft in size, such as large rocks.

End Dumpers (also known as Tippers) use hydraulic rams to angle the bin and encourage material to slide out. It's important to only unload them with the trailer on level ground, as angling the bin increases the center of gravity to the point that even slight roll could cause it to fall over, especially with longer trailers!

Side Dumpers (also known as tippers) work just like End Dumpers, but their Achilles' heel is soft ground--by shifting the center of gravity to the side in these conditions, all the wheels on that side can become stuck in the dirt!

Live Floor Dumpers use a belt to unload. While they are much more stable than a tipper, the V shape reduces the amount they can carry.
