Downloading x360ce
x360ce is a handy little program that helps many games with the same controller mapping issues.
If your game has sketchy joypad support, this program usually fixes it. download it from here, and you should get a zip file in your browser's downloads folder.

Unzip it, but don't run the EXE just yet.
Finding the local files.
x360ce needs to be open in the game's file location.
Either manually find the folder you installed the game in, or go to your library, right click on the game title>properties>browse local files.
drag, or copy/paste x360ce.exe into the folder, and run it.
Configuring x360ce
say yes to the 2 dialog boxes that appear (this will create config files for the game to interface with the controller.)
On the next dialog box, Click "find the best solution" or whatever the option to that effect is. The button on the left.
Now it will show 2 pictures of an Xbox controller. Use the drop-down menus next to each button. You can either select each button manually, or press "record" to map it by pressing your joystick keys.
click save, and close the program. (DO NOT leave it open while playing the game. You'll be vewy vewy sowwy)
Now you can enjoy the game with your own custom joystick mappings.
